Plan Your Heart Attack Survival Strategy

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

“You’ve had a heart attack,” may be the most shocking words you’ll ever hear. Yet someone in the U.S. is told just that every 40 seconds.

Each year, over 800,000 Americans suffer a heart attack, with 605,000 stricken for the first time.

Special: Dr. Crandall Saved His Own Heart With This

Years ago, if a person had a heart attack there was a considerable chance he or she would not survive. For instance, in 1970 nearly 40% of older heart attack victims who made it to the hospital never left. But thanks to medical advances, that’s no longer the case. Today, that number is well below 10%.

If you have certain risk factors for heart disease, it could save your life to develop a strategy should you have a heart attack.

Plan ahead. If you have heart disease or a higher-than-average risk, you need to plan ahead. By planning, you’ll increase the likelihood you’ll not only survive, but that your heart will sustain as little damage as possible.

Call 911. If you think you’re having a heart attack, call 911. Don’t attempt to drive yourself to the hospital or have someone else do it. Paramedics can start procedures on the way to the hospital that may save your life. After dialing 911, chew a full-strength 325 mg aspirin (or 5 baby aspirin); make sure your door is unlocked and sit or lie down near it; have your list of medications nearby; notify your spouse, family, or a close friend; and alert your doctor.

Manage your hospital stay. After emergency treatment, if you don’t have your own cardiologist, you will likely get the opportunity to choose a doctor. If you don’t know one, ask the nurses for a recommendation. Try to make sure you’re never left alone in the hospital so you’ll have an extra pair of eyes double-checking everything. Also, make sure your room is clean, ask for a social worker to help sort through medical bills, and pay attention to your hospital records, medications, and instructions during checkout.

Post-heart attack appointments. In your first post-heart attack doctor visit you’ll get information that will set the tone for your recovery and well beyond. Your cardiologist will review what happened in the hospital, your test results, and any complications you may have. He or she will go over your treatment protocol, medications, and a plan help you maintain a healthy heart.

Commercial Bee Supply, a leading voice in the beekeeping industry, is spearheading a crucial initiative to establish a standard of identity for honey in the United States. Without clear guidelines, commercial beekeepers face challenges such as price fluctuations and consumer confusion due to fraud and mislabeling.
Their petition, urging Congress to pass the Honey Identification Verification and Enforcement Act (HIVE Act), aims to protect both consumers and domestic beekeepers. By establishing a standardized definition for honey, this legislation will ensure transparency in labeling and provide greater assurance of product quality.

Hi Jimi,

Finding solutions to your health puzzle can be a daunting task when navigating the day-to-day is already hard enough...

Actively participating in your care, constantly educating yourself about your condition, and advocating for the treatments and support you need can be overwhelming, confusing, and exhausting.

Does it ever feel like you’re trying to convince your doctors that you’re not making this up?

It’s not that they don’t want you to get better; they do. It’s just that the conventional approach to chronic illness is similar to its approach to acute care: symptom suppression.

With chronic conditions, however, there are not always such clear-cut answers. Chronic illness is a puzzle with multiple pieces requiring careful investigation and, most of the time, multiple modalities.

"Most vaccines don't actually even work by reducing the transmission of the illness. Most vaccines actually only work by making you the individual feel less sick, or maybe have a less severe course of their illness. But most vaccines don't actually prevent you from catching the infection and becoming mildly symptomatic and contagious to others. So for the most part, Paul, it doesn't even matter whether you're vaccinated or not, when it comes to the spread of illnesses."

Hi Jimi,
Here's a one-minute test you can do right now for your energy levels and overall health status. It's called the Body Oxygen Level Test... Ready?
  1. Take a normal breath in and out through your nose.
  2. Now, pinch your nostrils shut and hold your breath.
  3. Count the number of seconds until you feel the FIRST desire to breathe. (Don’t push your body to your absolute breath hold LIMIT.)
  4. Release and resume normal breathing.
How many seconds did you hold your breath for?
A healthy, vital, energetic body should be able to hold for AT LEAST 40 seconds. LESS THAN 25 seconds indicates potential dysfunctional breathing and low energy. So how can you improve?
The (free!) science-driven webinar from energy researcher Ari Whitten, M.S., Breathing for Energy: How To Dramatically Increase Your Energy and Squash Anxiety In Just 10 Minutes A Day, is happening again this Thursday.
Watch to learn the breathing practice that improves your mental health and helps you crush your fitness goals, enhance your metabolism, slow down aging, and increase resilience.

Can You Smell Your Air Freshener?
Today, we want to share some intriguing insights about an everyday item likely within your reach: air fresheners! While they're popular for their pleasant scents, recent findings from The Washington Post suggest their impact on indoor air quality might be less than refreshing.

Many of us use air fresheners to mask odors and enhance our living spaces. However, The Washington Post's comprehensive review reveals that these scents could be compromising the air we breathe. The article titled, When air fresheners in your home do more harm than good, explores the delicate balance between enjoying a fresh-smelling home and maintaining a healthy living environment.

Here are a few highlights from the article:

The Chemical Cocktail: Many air fresheners contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can contribute to indoor air pollution and pose health risks.

Health Implications: Exposure to these chemicals might be linked to respiratory problems, allergic reactions, and other health issues, particularly in children and pets.

Alternatives and Solutions: The article not only raises concerns but also offers practical advice on how to keep your home smelling fresh using safer, more natural methods.

As we continue to focus on our health and wellness, understanding the hidden impacts of products like air fresheners is crucial. We encourage you to read the full article - It's a well-researched piece that could change how you think about the air you breathe indoors.

Unveil the Hidden Dangers in Your Home
Our homes are becoming increasingly toxic and unhealthy...

Indoor environments can harbor toxins and health hazards that are often overlooked...

+ An abundance of allergens like dander (from humans and pets) compromise air quality and can lead to allergies and asthma.

+ Old mattresses, pillows, carpeting can become laden with dander from humans and pets and cause allergy complaints.

+ HVAC forced air duct systems need regular cleaning to remove all kinds of proteins that can get trapped in our homes – from animals to mold and even peanuts!

+ Increasing storms, higher humidity levels, new microclimates and water intrusion have created an increased amount of mold throughout our structures.

+ Proper lighting in our home is something we think a light bulb will correct, but did you know your body needs all spectrums of light to thrive? Varying color and amount of light affect circadian rhythm and mood, control bacteria and limit microbial growth.

+ Many homeowners are forced to deal with insect and pest issues, plus the dreaded weeds in the yard, but many pesticides and herbicides have neurologic and carcinogenic effects. (Have you heard about the lawsuits surrounding glyphosate and its health effects?)

Understanding these risks can help keep your home safe while protecting your health!

Through the trifecta approach, the My Healthy Home Summit will educate you about:
  • The health consequences of an unhealthy home
  • How to identify & test your home for toxins
  • Best new technologies for diagnosing problems in the home & how to implement them
  • Better building science & remediation strategies
  • How to get professional help
  • And more!
Identify and address the hidden dangers in your home when you attend this complimentary, online event.

You may have seen recent news articles tying increased depression and suicide rates in youth to the increased amount of time today's youth spend on screens.
As a child development psychologist, I can't say I'm surprised.
  • Nearly 1 in 5 teens say they are on YouTube or TikTok "almost constantly".1
  • On average, American children spend less than 10 minutes a day in unstructured outdoor play compared to seven hours in front of a screen.2
  • 4 in 10 young people report feelings of persistent sadness or hopelessness, and 1 in 5 report contemplating suicide.3
But the reality is: An emoji cannot replace a real smile, a real laugh, a real hug. "Likes" and Snapchats are not a substitution for a real friendship.
Today's kids need your support to give them more opportunities to get away from their screens, engage with their peers and explore the natural environment — especially with summer approaching.
At Boys & Girls Clubs of America, we're focused on giving youth in your community access to safe places where they can participate in a variety of outdoor programs and summer camps that drive STEM learning and nurture curiosity, leadership and other social-emotional skills.
We believe every kid deserves a safe, affordable outdoor place to play and grow. Your donation today gives them that for the upcoming summer months and beyond.
Thank you,

How Much Fasting Is Enough?

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

A small study found that limiting food to a narrow window of time each day may help people shed some extra pounds. And restricting eating to six hours may work as well as a stricter four-hour time frame.

In an eight-week trial, researchers found that "time-restricted" diets helped obese people on average drop about 3% of their starting body weight.

Special: Doctor Discovers Sugar Control Method, Naturally

But while the diets have become trendy of late, they seem to work the old-fashioned way — by cutting dieters' daily calories.

The principle is simple: People limit themselves to eating between certain hours of the day and then fast, with the exception of water and calorie-free drinks, for the remaining time. There's no calorie-counting and people can eat what they want.

Animal research has suggested intermittent fasting, in general, can have a broad range of effects, such as reducing markers of inflammation in the body, changing the makeup of gut bacteria, and spurring weight loss.

So why not just cut calories from your diet in the traditional way? One reason is people get sick of counting calories. That's not to say time-restricted eating is a piece of cake.

In the first week or two, people tend to get headaches, dizziness, and nausea, causing some to give up. However, those symptoms go away once the body adjusts to the new eating schedule.

But, it's not for everyone. People who are on medications that need to be taken with food may not be able to restrict their eating schedule. And those who exercise in the morning might have a hard time forgoing food till the afternoon.

6 Ways to Activate Autophagy without Fasting
If you want to increase your energy levels, lose fat, improve your mental clarity, reduce the risk of disease, and improve your overall health, you have to activate autophagy. Autophagy happens when your body recycles and disposes of old, damaged, or excess cells to leave room for the creation of new and healthy cells.

One of the best ways to activate autophagy is through fasting, however, you can activate autophagy without fasting as well.
