4 Numbers for Heart Health

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

Experts advise that you stay aware of these four numbers to gauge your risk for heart disease. Should you fall into the danger zone in any of these areas, your doctor may suggest lifestyle changes or medications to maintain heart health.

Blood pressure. This is measure of the force of your blood as it pushes against blood vessel walls. The American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association define normal blood pressure as a reading of less than 120/80 mmHg. Top number, or systolic, readings of 130-139 or bottom, diastolic, readings of 80-89 mmHg are considered Stage 1 hypertension. Consistent readings of 140/90 mmHg or higher are considered Stage 2 hypertension.

Special: Heart Surgeon's Secret to Healthy Blood Pressure

Blood sugar.
In a fasting blood sugar test, readings of 100 to 125 mg/dL are considered prediabetes and pose a risk for developing Type 2 diabetes, which can lead to heart disease and stroke. Readings of 126 or higher on more than one occasion are considered diabetes.

Cholesterol. A blood test will show levels of different types of this waxy, fatlike substance in your blood that’s linked to cardiovascular disease. A doctor can use these results, along with the other numbers, to give a detailed assessment of heart disease risk.

Body mass index. If you know your height and weight, you can use an online calculator to determine this, such as the one at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. And research shows waist-to-hip ratio measurement may be a better indicator of heart attack risk than body mass index, especially in women.

Iron Deficiency Linked to Heart Disease

Dr. Chauncey Crandall, M.D., writes:

European researchers reported that about 1 in 10 new cases of heart disease in middle-age people might be prevented if they had sufficient levels of iron in their diets.

Iron is essential for equilibrium in the body and energy metabolism, which might be a potential link, said lead researcher Dr. Benedikt Schrage.
Special: Coronary Heart Disease: 5 Tips to Reduce Your Risk

Earlier studies have found that iron-deficient patients with cardiovascular diseases are more likely than others to be hospitalized or die. The current study included more than 12,000 European men and women with a median age of 59. Over roughly 13 years, the researchers looked for heart disease and stroke, death due to cardiovascular disease, and death from any cause.

Iron deficiency was tied to a 24% higher risk of heart disease, a 26% increased risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, and a 12% higher risk of dying from any cause, compared with no iron deficiency, the researchers found.

When Schrage and his colleagues calculated the effect of iron deficiency over 10 years, they found that 5% of all deaths, 12% of cardiovascular deaths, and 11% of new heart disease diagnoses could be attributed to iron deficiency.

Live 4 Years Longer by Having Lots of Sex

By Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Mike Roizen, MDs

"Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana."

Thank you, Groucho Marx, for reminding us that these little guys, so important in the understanding of human genetics and biology, are always on the lookout for more potassium (bananas are loaded with it). And that's a good thing. Potassium is essential for a healthy sex life, and we certainly don't want sexually frustrated fruit flies!

Special: Why Most Male Intimacy Supplements Don't Work

Here's why: The latest research reveals that male FFs die sooner when they're aroused by pheromones from female drosophila (the scientific name for fruit flies) but are unrequited in their ardor. In short, sexual frustration kills. But get the twosome together, and the male lives a longer and — we may be projecting here — happier life.

What does this have to do with YOU?

Genes in fruit flies are similar to humans' and often serve the same function (for example, fruit flies produce insulin-like molecules — lose them and their blood sugar rises, just as in diabetes).

Now, we seem to have similarities in our reproductive mojo as well. The Longevity Project found that women who had more orgasms lived longer, while research from the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute showed that men who had the most orgasms added about four years to their lifespan.

So, to live longer, spend time with your honey exploring mutually enjoyable intimacy. You'll flood your body with oxytocin, the bonding hormone, DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone), a precursor to estrogen and testosterone that reduces inflammation, and immunoglobulins, which boost immune strength.

The power of love!

Sleepless Nights Damage Heart

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

People who get less than seven or eight hours of sleep at night are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease, including heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. Worse yet, researchers now say this can happen in just one week.

There are two types of cholesterol that circulate in the blood: LDL cholesterol, which is the “bad” cholesterol that builds up in the heart’s coronary arteries, causing heart disease; and HDL cholesterol, which can help whisk it away, reducing cardiovascular risk.

Special: Sleep Better With This Doctor's Natural Secret

Researchers from the University of Helsinki wanted to find out why lack of sleep was linked with cardiovascular disease, so they analyzed people sleeping in a laboratory setting.

They looked at the impact of sleep deprivation on genes regulating the transport of cholesterol around the body — and on the actual levels of cholesterol in the blood.

Researchers found the genes regulating the transport of cholesterol around the body are less active in sleep-deprived people than those who get a good night's rest. They also found that these people had higher levels of LDL cholesterol in their blood and lower levels of HDL cholesterol.

Most importantly, they discovered that such changes occurred only after one week, according to the study, which appeared in Scientific Reports.

I recently had a delicious conversation with some of the members of our online family.

Kimberleigh shared candidly that she wants to have a health turnaround this year and was thinking about joining my Inner Circle Wellness community. Her biggest concern? The FOOD.

She said she loves good food (especially comfort food) and was worried about not liking the healthy recipes we serve up every month inside of Inner Circle Wellness.

Have you ever written off healthier eating because you’re worried it won’t taste good?

Clearly, you’re not alone. Kimberleigh’s comment sparked the GREATEST conversation about our food philosophy. And a few of our Inner Circle members chimed in with their honest reviews of the ICW eats:

  • Judy said, "The sheet pan gnocchi, kale & mushrooms was delicious and easy!"
  • Sharyn said, "The recipes are AMAZING"
  • Kristin said, "The recipes have SIMPLIFIED my meal planning, grocery shopping, grocery costs and my husband LOVES them too!"
  • Karen said, "The avocado chocolate pudding is better than 'real' pudding BY FAR!! So rich and healthy!!"
  • Fernanda said, "The recipes are really great!"
  • Donna said, "AND there's 30 min recipes!"

I hope these comments inspire you to believe that food can be delicious, nourishing and easy to make all at the same time. You don’t have to sacrifice flavor for health.

Deprivation doesn’t work, sweetheart. It’s not sustainable. Writing off foods you love (or that may be part of your cultural background or family traditions) as "bad" and swearing to forsake them forever can only lead to an epic crash and burn.

Real health should be about abundance.

It should be about adding MORE of the good ingredients you LOVE and letting those naturally crowd out some of the low-value stuff that doesn’t serve you.
