Yeah I think that's what schnarp used on the one that I saw in an orchid fasttech discussion. Looks legit. At this rate every minor improvement on my orchid will leave it a whole new rta. What do you guys think of creating a channel around the perimeter of the outside of the base of the chimney. Like a moat. Same depth as the juice channels on the base.

Hmmm. Idk if it truly would have a effect on wicking, but I could be completely wrong. There's only one true way to find out

Also might I add, even though I don't think it would have a effect, I support you 100% in trying it. You never know, it could be the next great thing for tanks.

Yeah the purpose I see for the moat is to capture every last lil bit of juice without losing the juice capacity that having a tapered bottom would. And I really like the idea of having raised airflow holes to concentrate airflow on the coils and help prevent leaking with loser wicking jobs or if the wick ends up close to the airhole

since there has been no new news on the orchid front, I decided to post my new V2/V3/V4 base I just received and this morning was able to get a full 2.8mm (#34 drill bit) out of the air holes. haven't decided If I am going to make it a V4 or V3 yet. I'll just keep it as a spare and drill out my other two bases for now. sorry for the blurry picture. I had to crop and enlarge it.

I used a dremel to open up the juice channels on one of my decks. It didnt leak but it seems to gurgle a bit.

I'm jealous the things id do for a mill, mirco metal lathe, drill press, or cnc machine. Unfortunately they don't involve saving money ;P

I'm still in love with the Orchid. Just rewicked my quads and oh my god, the flavor is just immense, in your face, saturated clouds of pure vaping happiness. Perfect draw, perfect vapor production, everything is perfect. Orchid is perfect.

I'm loving my SP, those step outs on the channels was an act of genius. I'm considering attempting to mill something similar on my orchids. I can lay the SP on it's side for an extended time and not one drop leaks out. I cut my wicks to go into the step out, putting the chimney barrel on locks them in place. Wicks outstandingly, can chain vaoe an entire tank of high VG, never a dry hit.

Last night my Orchid-Ignition rig tipped over in my jacket pocket and in the course of an hour meeting leaked out ~2 ml of juice. It had never occurred to me before @jamieg71 wrote this post that the juice channel recesses could prevent loss of vacuum when sideways. I'm still amazed by it and simply have to give it a try. Preventing spills in pockets is reason enough. That's the only place where my attys might find themselves sideways for an extended period of time.

Just tried a plunge cut with my drill press, cross-slide vise, v-block and (gulp!) 2-flute HSS end mill, the only bit I had in that size. I knew the HSS would only be good enough to test for adequate clamping. Result: stopped the cut. Too much vibration and bit biting, and I don't want to trash a perfectly good HSS mill bit. However, the clamping might hold well enough with a clean cutting cobalt 4-flute bit. Will have to order one to continue... :(

I must say I am amazed by this beautiful piece of work, even if it's a clone. Once you wick it right, it vapes like a charm. I think for the very first time I'm in love

Like I said, my shaky hands will make for an ugly hack job of a mod on my poor Orchid. As with Android, so with vaping... Form follows function.
Cheap orchid base I picked up from FT

The ugly holes are 4.63 X 3.15mm, deck side and base

Ugly, I know, I know but with the SilverPlay chimney and tank..

Won't go into great details, its a hack job after all. You always hear/read how this RTA or that RTA has AF like a dripper and its never true. Even the SP has slightly less than a Plume Veil. But this thing, only Atty I have with more AF is my little boy, and only with the chuff cap. A little over 2.8ml capacity, and with a six wrap dual parallel 24awg @ .25ohms, it sort of drinks the juice. Fast.

Edited Cuz I'm dyslexic sometimes

Thx to @TheWestPole , I got my tank o-rings (that worked brilliantly) to assemble the brass KF quartz tank setup with my Orchid v4. Been working on this mod/atty combo for a couple months now. :)

Same style as Fran's Mickey Mouse Ears, I'll call it a Fluffy Bunny Ears build. ;-)

0.8 ohm, DC 10-wraps each of 28 gauge Kanthal, on a 2.4mm screwdriver. Wicked with Labo J.C.
Did a slight angled bend on the leg to properly line them up with the airholes this time.

This is the Cigabuye Orchid v4 I won in the contest. About the same as my Focal one I'd bought, but with a brass 510 instead of copper.

Specs: http://coiltoy.ermeso.com/?import$119$0$6$2$240$0$3$40$0$8$0$

Full Album: http://imgur.com/a/88MKS

(L) Wicked and (R) just moistened with juice

Yeah, I don't blow huge clouds, but this'll do with 16mg 20/80 juice.

De nada. So you're going for the 40mm then. Thought you might. :) Eagerly awaiting your report on the vape. :D

actually, im using the 40mm plus the small poly piece thats between the two metal rings of the v4. got it looking pretty smooth. think im going to throw something around a .35 in it with 26 gauge, should get me a decently warm vape, i bet it is going to taste fantastic

Here's the both of the modded Orchid v4's on their mods. I'm done fiddling with stuff for awhile now. ;)

IMG_0734.JPG IMG_0736.JPG

IMG_0688.JPG

The top two are crappy night-time indoor pics, but ya get the idea.

I've wanted a classy sort of mod/RTA combo, on the cheap. Something different than the usual. ;-)
The wood and brass Wood Fairy and the carbon fiber and brass Knight do the trick.

Thx everyone, for your modding knowledge, links and general contributions to my Orchid project! :)

Those brass tank rings with that finish look great. Will definitely follow your lead on my brassies.

It worked great on those rings and the DTs.

I went to remove the coating on my Wood Fairy mod the same way as I did before with my Sentinel, so I could do that treatment, didn't go so well.
Seems to be a crappy brass and it started leaching the zinc out and turning it copper...yikes. So yeah, that is why it looks more aged and mottled.

A bit of Brasso should fix it, but don't have any ATM..

so is it just me or does the fact that the kayfun v4 having slits running across the threading to help prevent air build up seem like it should be a standard thing in all tanks

I don't know what you mean by slits running across the threading and air build up. Could you post a detail pic?

P Busardo mentions it and shows it just after 13:00 its like they took each side of the threads to a grind wheels to make it flat or cut slits up the sides.

just seems like it would be such an easy mod to do to any top cap to fix a universal problem.
However it might have to do with the size of the top cap vs the size of the fill top on the kayfun v4. now that i think about it you might have to take so hefty chunks out to get the same effect. or twist it on very slowly

You can see why KF4 needs it because it's top fill only. When Orchid first came out it was top fill only too. However, people were already used to the Kayfun top fill technique, turning the atty upside down to clear juice away from juice channels before screwing the top cap on all the way, and just continued to do that with Orchid. I still use that technique with my V1s.

Bottom filling from V2 on swept the whole issue aside.

makes sense. it just such a small alteration i might have to try it on one of my spare orchid caps. i still have a problem with top filling and it not flooding no matter how many different ways i've tried it. could be my wicking method, my orchid or maybe some other lil thing i am missing. I've watched and read enough to know i am doing it right but i still have to blow out access juice every time. The bottom fill seems kinda ridiculous to. needle bottles take forever and squeeze fills and blast drippers always seem to back up.Mainly why i have been looking for an easy mod to fix the problem. like widening my bottom fill or grinding the sides flat on the top threads.

I hear your frustration with top filling. Took me a while to get it down, and I still get a few drops of spillage. After filling, inverting then tightening the top cap upside down, I find it best to set the atty down for a minute inverted so the excess in the chamber can drip out. Then, keeping it inverted, pick it up and blow the rest out. Main point when blowing out is that there be no juice over the outside of the channels. If there is any, blowing will just pull that juice into the chamber.

I haven't experienced any problems bottom filling with a needle, but I wonder if there were a gap between the chamber and base whether that would help the situation. The pic below shows what I mean. There are a number of ways to achieve it. You can do it on some models just by inserting the chimney into the top cap first (with dry o-ring, etc.) and then threading chamber on base holding by the top cap. Other ways involve modifying the chimney, but you might test the idea first.

Yup.
IIRC, t's called "quartz" because it is supposed to be Borosilicate glass. :)
Pretty heavy glass though, it's about as thick as the Chobra's glass tank.

Many thanks to @alex31804 and @CaFF for the vape mail and sharing the (o-ring) wealth. :)

YW matey.

Whew, I was getting worried ya weren't gonna get that mail...right on!

You were definitely right about these tank o-rings..they surely did the trick. NOT coming off of there. ;)

This is the only Kayfun top cap I don't have that I still want. Just been too cheap to go for it.

Wonder if the Kayfun V4 top cap would fit on an Orchid chimney to be able to top fill?
Yeah that's what I was originally thinking. It would be nice.

I think so Robert, but not certain about the V4 chimney diameter. o_O
The orchid v4 chimney outside diameter is 5mm. Just measured it. Wouldn't be the same as all the other Orchid versions? I only have the v4 and v6

You think that cap would fit on a v4? I like it too. It's different for sure.

Whoops, Robert, I got mixed up with posts around yours about KF v4 not Orchid v4.

Yes, it will fit like other Kayfuns, but there will likely be a bit of excess chimney length sticking up into the DT area. So you could either drill out the DT, shorten the chimney or let the DT stick up a bit.

heres some cool shit

not sure if this was already discovered here yet

Thanks, @M5amhan. That's probably more interesting if you have a Kayfun V4 and want a dual coil build with better airflow. Not sure what it brings to the Orchid table except a different look, which is kinda cool.

Does answer a question that came about KF4 chimneys earlier... :)

lol didn't want to start a new thread so just needed a place to share. I tried it with my v3 deck last night and it fits. Gonna wick it up and give it a go tonight
