Hey guys, I finally got hold of a drill yesterday and wanted to practice with 2 22g cores with a 24g wrap using the grimmgreen method. It didn't come out so hot, as you'll see below. My drill only has one speed though. How do you wrap these with a single-speed drill? The damn wire goes out of control as soon as I start it.

well, first off ... the 24g wrap is not the correct wire to wrap with, that is what will cause your pictured issue.
The drill isn't the problem in this case. I would not recommend wrapping with anything bigger than 32g wrap.

The common sizes for wrapping Clapton coils is: 36-38g with 40+ being used very commonly with Alien coils and more exotic style coils.

So in the question about the single speed drill --- If it is the type that is either "on" or "off" with no method to slow start your rotation, I would recommend getting a cheap variable speed drill. You simply can't just "start" and expect the wrap to come out nicely.

Go to a Harbor Freight and pickup a cheap variable speed drill. $20

If you want a little better drill to start with (if you have the $$$), this is the drill I've been using for the past year for only coil building. Amazon has it for $55

I found that exact same drill (the B&D one) for 30 bucks at Walmart. I'm going to go exchange for that one. Also, it's good to know that it's the wire and not me effing things up. Guess I gotta wait for my 38g SS to come in (whenever that will be. This place tells you nothing.)

Something else that I just thought about, if your going off the GrimmGreen video I think you are.
You need to make sure you have some good Ball Bearing Swivels -- NOT the cheap / plain "fishing swivels".
There is a world of difference in the two. The Ball Bearing Swivels will keep your wrap from jumping and catching while you are spinning the core with the drill.

So, while your at Walmart, pick some up. I personally prefer size #3 and #4 the best.
Chain 2-3 of them together. I just have mine attached to a 2x4 mount that I made.

Already took care of that. I'm also using a block of wood as my workstation like in the video.

Walmart has one cheaper that I like better for coils, its the 18 volt Hyper tough, its red and black and is $20. I like it because the chuck closes almost completely, i wouldnt ever take it to a job with me but its great for coil building.

Yeah, they had the Hyper Tough one, but I thought I needed the little teeth at the end of the drill. That's why I got the B&D. At $30 I couldn't pass it up. Plus B&D drills have never let me down. They're tough little devils. :) I've never felt the need to buy those $300+ DeWalts, even though I'm sure they're quite good also. All I'm really going to use my drill for is coil building and a bit of computer work on the side. I also had the opportunity to get a Daedalus (that's the little build tool that makes the claptons by itself), but eh, the one I found for 37 bucks was coming out of China, and I don't have the patience to wait 2-3 weeks for everything to go through Customs and shit like that, LOL!

    24g wrapping wire HOLY SHIT!

    I won't use any gauge lower than 36g, I personally prefer 38g - 44g myself.

Meh, it was just to get the hang of the technique. I didn't intend to actually use that coil even if it did come out all clean 'n nice. My 38g wire comes in today finally though.
