Square Enix has announced that its 2D Pixel Remaster of Final Fantasy 4 will release for PC and mobile platforms on September 8.

Launching for Steam and mobile platforms, Final Fantasy 4's Pixel Remaster will feature a number of small tweaks and improvements over its predecessor. The title's 2D pixel graphics have been redrawn for modern hardware whilst its iconic soundtrack has been rearranged for the modern remake. Work on the soundtrack is said to have been overseen by Nobuo Uematsu himself.

Gameplay in FF4's Pixel Remaster has seen improvements too. The remake will utilize updated controls for controller players, a more contemporary UI, and auto-battle options to make combat that little bit smoother. Square Enix also says that it has included a number of quality-of-life improvements in the game, which range from supplemental extras like a bestiary, to the inclusion of a music player and the ability to save in-game at any time.

PC players who pre-order Final Fantasy 4 will get a 20% discount in addition to two limited wallpapers and three specially rearranged remixed tracks from the series: The Red Wings, Battle 2, and Final Fantasy 4's Main Theme.

Final Fantasy 4 Pixel Remaster follows the launch of re-releases for the first three games in the series, which debuted on July 28. Square Enix is set to release further remasters for Final Fantasy 5 and Final Fantasy 6 in the future though release dates for those titles are yet to be confirmed.

Following their July release, fans of the series were quick to add their own tweaks to the pixel remasters of Final Fantasy 1 - 3. After many fans were quick to point out the game's questionable choice in font, modders working on the game have come up with multiple ways to fix it. Solutions range from modifying font files in the game's directory to switching out the title's Japanese and English default font styles. In both cases, the fixes offer a far more sightly and accessible typeface for players to use during their time with the game.
