In the spirit of the massive 438-day production timeline of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, Amazon is taking its time while filming its upcoming Middle-earth TV series.

After facing delays due to COVID-19 fifteen months ago, production is still underway on the first season of the streamer's Lord of the Rings series, with seemingly no end in sight. Actor Benjamin Walker, perhaps most well-known for his lead performances in the stage musical Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson and 2012's Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, recently opened up about the ongoing production.

"It is a bit nebulous at this point," Walker told Collider in an interview promoting the new Netflix movie The Ice Road. "We've been here a long time and they'll let us go when they're done with us."

The production on Amazon's Lord of the Rings series has been reported to be budgeted as high as $1 billion, a gargantuan investment that is believed to be unprecedented in the television industry. Although the series isn't set to premiere until sometime in 2022, Amazon has already ordered a renewal for a second season.

In the same interview, Walker also discussed his mentality in joining a project that requires such a long-term commitment.

"[With] Tolkien, I was a huge fan as a kid, and still am as an adult," Walker said. "And it was kind of one of those where if you say no you might regret it for the rest of your life. It comes out and you go, 'I could have been doing that?'"

Walker remained tight-lipped on plot details about the upcoming show, though he stated that the audience "will be glad [they] knew so little when [they] see it."

The official synopsis for the show teases a prequel that takes place in the Second Age of Middle-earth, thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Despite the new setting, the series will still include some familiar characters, such as Sauron, Galadriel, and Elrond.
