I'm against the theory of having to have an account on a vendors site in order to enter a contest here on VU

In addition, the site doesn't seem to be functioning properly - get an error when trying to perform searches and clicking links to go to various sections.

Absolutely: your internet bandwidth and customer service are absolutely atrocious! you have flash sales & then, in the middle of a valid order, a customer gets kicked off & unable to purchase their items..& then there is no effort to compensate the customer with the items at the price they should have been able to purchase them for
