At least the article gets it right, calling it a freak incident.

It looks like a homemade mod of some sort. I would not personally put that thing near my face!!

The article did say it exploded and hit him in the chest. While he probably did get burned from the explosion, I highly doubt he died from getting struck in the chest.

I vote it was a heart attack, and not the "explosion" that killed him.
