    Disrupting immune response

"We know that cigarette smoking increases your risk of infection with influenza, and we were curious whether e-cigarettes would also disrupt the normal immune response," Rebuli said.

The study included nearly 50 people14 e-cigarette users, 13 tobacco cigarette smokers and 20 non-smokers. On average, participants were slightly overweight and in their mid to late 20s. But the e-cigarette vapers were slightly younger, with an average age of 23.

    E-cigarettes do affect immune system

All of the volunteers were exposed to a "live attenuated influenza virus". Rebuli said this particular virus only replicates in the nose.

When the investigators looked at how the immune system responded to the virus, they saw differences in e-cigarette and regular cigarette smokers compared to the non-smokers. But the changes differed depending on the method of smoking.

Rebuli said it's not clear exactly how e-cigarettes led to the changes in the immune response, just that they did. And while the researchers didn't look at whether or not a flu infection might be more severe in people who use e-cigarettes, "it's a possibility," she said.

They didn't look if the flu is worse if you vape but anythings possible so that's what the headline will be.
    Seriously?

The study was with 50 people. only 14 vapers
Couldn't be that genetics may have something to do with it?

I don't know about you guys but there have been some severely nasty flu seasons where I live and I have never caught the flu as a vaper.

cherry picked science is not science at all. tailor the control group make a basic claim and it will get misquoted and all of a sudden there is antifreeze in vape juice

I'll pass. Last time I had the flu was more than 25 years ago.

More often than not, the vaccine makers are incorrect in their predictions for the strain that will be prevalent during the upcoming season, which means their product is ineffective in any case.

It's all BS - I've had fewer and weaker, shorter colds since I started vaping. In fact, I totally skipped them entirely this last winter.

I'm endlessly amused that they blame smoking - and vaping - and then kick both groups out into the cold/sleet/wind/snow for a "break". Numbnuts.

Like Ross said, I too haven't had the flu or a cold in about 25 yrs. No flu shots either, I probably get enough mercury from fish.

I used to get colds several times a year when I was smoking. It wasn't due to being run out in the cold rain and snow either; nobody has done that to me since my last "corporate" employer in the early 1990s. Those colds would inevitably crawl into my chest and hang around for weeks.

I've had exactly one cold in the 5-1/2 years since I switched to vaping. I picked that one up working a trade show booth in Germany last year, where I shook hands with about a zillion people. It did not work its way into my chest and was over in a week.

All that said, the common cold and the flu are not the same thing.

well hmmmm. let us see... 50 people and 14 vapers.......14 vapers...Oh yeah I'd say that is a landmark piece of scientific research that is...why we haven't seen such an ironclad piece of serious scholarly work since say...... the study on the habits of Bigfoot, or the Roswell alien porn tapes....and to think I wasted my life working when I could have sat on my ass gone down to the local B&M vape store chatted up a dozen vapers off the street and rubber stamped a day at the races as "science"....To think that people unquestionablly believe shit like this is science, makes medival peasants walking around with the toe bone of Saint Jude ( which the bought from the local monastary for the price of two rabbits and a piglet) tied around their necks to ward of witches seem downright sensible.

I call plentiful BS because my scientific research on vaping has taught me that propylene glycol is a disinfectant (both germicide and virucide), and, when I was still a smoker, I used to get the flu more than three times per year on average with a recovery period lasting more than three weeks on average, whereas, ever since I switched to vaping about 2.5 years ago, I've only had the flu two times during those same 2.5 years with a recovery period of only 1.5 weeks each time. Research also shows vaporized PG acts as an air desinfectant that effectively helps to prevent transmittable respiratory disease, https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5286581/pdf/edinbmedj75046-0036.pdf

Haven't had a flu shot since I was a little kid. Vaped since... 08 or somewhere around there and haven't had the flu in over a decade. Few days with a cold here and there but no flu.
    Fake news lol

Haven't had the flu in years. I also haven't taken a sick day in over 3 years, I believe it's genetic.
