15 years ago I was offered a really nice position with Oracle in CA. My wife and I discussed it and decided against it due to the cost of housing, living expenses and the educational system (2 young sons). I'm an independent, socially moderate and fiscally conservative, my wife is independent and socially liberal and fiscally conservative. The huge bump in salary would have been snarfed up by state taxes and housing. My wife was concerned that it would take her years to get tenure at a University, if she could get hired at all. She flew out and did an informational interview at UC Berkley. After that, she was completely opposed to moving to CA, she said the people she interviewed with were hardcore socialists using academia as a screen.

The H1 visa system is a total scam. Quite a few of the folks that come over on one think that they can get sponsored for a green card before the term ends. Mostly it never happens. The real reason there are a lot of H1-B visa holders is to in-source foreigners, displace American IT workers and make the consulting company tons of money while supposedly saving the company doing the in-sourcing some money. Never works out that way though, productivity drops like a rock and then the excuses begin due to language and foreign customs. I's seen it literally dozens of times with companies in my area. A huge glittery carrot of a 25% reduction in capital salary expenditures is dangled in front of an executive who then either outsources the work to India or the Philippines, or in-sources with a large Indian consulting company. The result is always the same, a huge increase in capital spend over 3-4 years before any tangible benefit can be realized, by then the IT departments are decimated and the products and services operating way, way below any reasonable expectation.

remember over ten years ago the price of wine grapes went through the roof, and every yahoo with an acre of land in and around Napa and Sononma county had grape vines all around their double wides growing grapes for all the vanity wineries, I don't know how it was where you were but around those counties that's how it was and still is to a big degree..all the way up to mendecino.....there were so many people growing grapes the price plummeted..I can imagine the same industry springing up around the green stuff all these old hippies and new age burn outs growing obscure and speciality varities hell the stuff is a fucking weed it doesn't take any great shakes knowledge or ability to grow it. man I can envison a time where you can pay a license for the tax and you'll be able to go to your local farmers market and by a dozen diffrent varities.and you'll have a class of petty criminals running it across borders like the old bootleggers used to do. it just stands to reason if it's legal to grow more people will grow it and the price will plummet...
LOL. Farmers and ranchers do it all the time. One year potato prices will be high, the next year everybody and their brother grows potatoes and the market price drops because of the glut. This has been minimized now by farming associations but still happens to a degree.
The Texas drought a couple years ago caused Texas cattlemen to sell off their herds at low prices because they couldn't feed them. The next two years there was record cattle prices because of the lack of Texas beef.
You don't know much about farming and commodity prices. Farming is boom and bust based on supply. The green stuff would certainly drop in price if legalized across the country. It's extremely easy to grow, it's a weed, and lots of people would try to cash in creating a glut in supply.
