I confess... I am a fan of the guys that have turned simple coil building techniques into an absolute art form. While not every vaping enthusiast has the time, the patience, the cash flow (or perhaps even the skill) to pull off fancy coils like some of the online "pros" (imo) ... like TwistedMesses, Squidoode, OhmBoyOC to name a few... I can honestly admit that I have learned so much from them on Instagram and YouTube.

These artists (and there are many here on VU) challenge me in that never ending pursuit of the PERFECT VAPE. You know what I mean. The right rda or tank, the right type or combination of wire, the right wire gauge size, the right inner diameter, the right number of wraps, the orientation of the coil(s), the type of wicking material, the PG/VG ratio, and the right wattage (or temperature). When you get all those details just right it is... ahhhh heavenly and oh so satisfying.

SO... I thought it would be sort of fun to start a thread for folks here to post their fancy coil builds. From a first time coil attempt to an advanced enthusiast please know that ALL ARE WELCOME to post here, to share their thoughts, to make coil suggestions, to share their encouragement, and toss out some new ideas.

Please note a word of caution: I am not encouraging anyone lacking the working knowledge of battery safety and ohms law to attempt any of these sub ohm types of builds. Do so at your own risk. Please vape safely.

SO... post it up gang. Lets see some of your coil porn or share some links and/or images of some of the best coil porn you have found online. If you can add details about how you created your coil (ie wire gauge, ohms, etc) that would be great.

I will prime the pump a bit a share a few older ones....

Here is a dual quad coil dual build on my old ipv2 in a 28.5 plume veil. A total of 8 coils. It was really a pain in the ass to build and tough to wick. I thought it looked real nice but wasn't the vape i expected. Oh well. Cross that one off my list.

I was looking through my tool box and found a drill punch that had a nice shape and wondered what a TORNADO coil might look like if i used it as a jig. So i gave it a shot. Here is the side and top view of the results. If memory serves me right this was on my dark horse and my ipv3IMG_0628.jpg IMG_0629.jpg

Alright... sort of feel like a relationship i once had... very one sided. Since no one else has added YET I will throw another one out there.
This is a coil idea i came up with when I wanted to do a quad coil. I call it the SCORPIO (because of how it looks when it stands up). I twisted the Kanthal and then split the leads and do two coils. When done you can do 4 coils (which i tried both horizontal and vertical). IMG_0611.jpg IMG_0612.jpg IMG_0613 3.jpg IMG_0614 3.jpg

Feel like the Muppet movie song, "Having a me party". So... here is one more (then i think i might give up). :(

Here is a Staple Coil I put on my Mutation Xv3 yesterday. (I have replaced phillips head screws with flat point hex grub set screws on most of my RDAs... I think they make a much better connection.)
This is 5 pieces of Kanthal A1 .5 ribbon wire wrapped with 30g Nichrome80. I did 5 wraps on 2.4 mm screwdriver and wicked with Japanese Cotton. This dual coil ohms at .15 and fires great at 100watts on my ipv3IMG_0676.jpg IMG_0677.jpg

"One is the loneliest number...." Just wondering if any one else might discover this thread and hop on it.

here are a few more....
  1. Octa micro coil on Plume veil 28.5
  2. Staged Heating Coil (Kanthal clapton alternating with twisted Nichrome)
  3. Interlocking chain coil
  4. Standard Clapton
  5. Massive Zipper Coil

dual penny coils.
And order your juice by the tanker truck full. Just a guess but about 12 car batteries in a 3s4p configuration to fire it and not have insane voltage drop.

that'd about do her.
Is that actually copper rod twisted up, or is it tube? If rod that's a mints worth at the price of copper. If tube I'd change the name to the thumper coil, thump, thump, thump... and enjoy a little moon light shining down on me!

Edit: Never mind, I was viewing on my phone and only saw part of the picture... I opened on my 24" monitor at work and get it now...

Maybe i can bring this thread back to its intended focus with another REAL coil submission (not that i don't enjoy the occasional humorous sidetrack).

Here are two coils i threw together last night. The staggered staple coil turned out to be too low (.8) to run dual which is my preference. BUMMER. I will try again.

The staggered fused clapton is .09 dual. 2.4mm diameter, Mix of Nichrome80 and KanthalA1

All of your builds demonstrate focus and creativity. Unfortunately they don't call me "the minute man" for nothing. To date, the most exotic things I build are simple twisted kanthal and Claptons.

to GrayVaper: Funny...
I have sometimes worried if my wife thinks of me as a "minute man"... sorry. TMI i suppose.

I know it takes time and tons of patience but i really enjoy the challenge of making some of these fancy coils. I think the thing i like so much about the fused clapton and staggered fused clapton is all the little nooks and crannies in the coil itself to hold juice. I just get such amazing flavor and cloud. I confess i am usually running .10 to .20 ohms on most of these crazy dual builds and firing between 75-100 watts on a regulated device. This of course eats batteries much quicker but i have no issue with swapping out once a day.

@BUDKISS I envy your coil talent. I can do simple twisteds just fine, and a twisted helixed with a straight wire. Though every time I try and do a basic clapton, the arthritis in my hands tells me to fuck off. The more advanced from there... I can only dream! My brain knows what to do, but my hands just won't let me do it.

DickyT, I can relate to your challenges. Short story for you. About a year and a half ago i was in a bad accident. I lost 8 1/2 pints of blood and spent three weeks in a coma. The doctors said they doubted i would ever be the same as i had diminished brain activity and when they would try to wake me up i would go into grand mal seizures. Two days after Christmas a miracle happened. I woke up. I had to learn how to talk and walk again. After months of rehab today i am back to most of my activities of regular life (although still unable to go back to previous profession). SO.... i can honestly say that perseverance does pay off. (This sept i will do a 5K... fast walk, not run.)

Last night i just wasn't in the zone to build. It happens. Several failed attempts and plenty of wasted wire. Today i was challenged to give it another shot. I did a dual Staggered Stapled Fused Clapton with 5 strands of .5 Kanthal ribbon wire stacked inside, then staggered clapton with 26g Kanthal (with 36K loose wrap) running on the outside and finally tied together with 32g Kanthal A1. It took me about 2 hours and three attempts. It runs at .12 ohms on my ipv4 in my twisted messes rda and vapes at 90-100w amazing!

All I can say to those who want to learn... don't let anything hold you back from discovering the perfect vape. It is worth it.

I was actually a bit disappointed in the staggered staple coil i built (and posted just above). After all that work and trial and error. Oh well.
I think the combination of wire was heating up the coil too quickly. The clouds were there but the flavor was well... just off somehow
SO>>>>>> i woke up this morning with the goal to create a flawless staggered fused Clapton. I used 26g KanthalA1 for the core wires and 34g Nichrome80 for all the outer layers. Wrapped on 3mm diameter screwdriver and wrapped 4 times and put in TwistedMesses RDA. Ohms at .156 (dual)
Whoa!!! This coil was just what i was hoping for. Amazing flavor and wonderful clouds. Enjoy.

been building since june 2014, didn't start getting crazy until december time frame of last year when I did my first clapton, and its just progressed from there, i still run single 18650 mechs but i daily a sig100w and parallel 18650 beast box, just got a twisted messes rda a couple weeks ago, and its a builders playground, but i also love my mutx's, and gonna need to grab a petri here soon, as far as the pictures twisted messes posted a video and everything he talks about i have and do, so check it out here

K.I.S.S.,
I immediately went to your instagram and was also amaze at your artwork. Great job. BRAVO

I watched Kent's video a couple days ago. Maybe time to add some of those tweaks to my photo efforts. Why go through all that effort and then end up with crappy photos, right?

I spotted one on your page i hadn't tried.. the alien clapton. might have to do that soon. Might need some pointers

I love building coils. It has become a bit of a hobby.
I visit some of the local shops and it seems every time i am there someone stops me and asks me to build a this or that. I do it for fun (and free) because it is a passion and i love the look on their face when they discover what their equipment CAN do if properly set up.

Thanks again for posting. Keep em coming.

idk why I enjoy this so much , it wasnt suppose to belike this, rebuilding was one of those things that i looked at and was lik nope, not gonna do it, too much work, and here I am, and now im working part time on the weekends just to build, i didnt need another job but hey the opportunity presented itself so i took it, Once people experience how some of these builds vape they fall inlove all over again, and wonder why they hadnt done it sooner, and most dont have the patience or time but that doesnt mean you have to go with out, lol

and I use a galaxy note 4, was using a note 3, with a macro lens and have somewhat figured out how to use IG filters, but getting good shots requires patience also, i wouldnt care if i didnt start posting to IG

as far as the alien I'm just now revisiting it from failed attempts months back, and plan on doing more then a few variations in the coming weeks, if you've done the dragon skin then you've done part of the process, decore and stretch clapton wrapping but it needs to be stretched further, ohmboyoc did a tutorial on LV youtube channel, when you go to wrap it you have to rotate the drill in the opposite direction you did the original clapton, so that takes some getting used to

Wow.. seems to be the day for this coil because Squidoode just posted his tutorial.

BTW... i tried this coil build. MAN IT IS A PITA! The hardest part for me was keeping three strands flat (and not bunch together when wrapping)

Consider it a failure but I will try again some day.

A couple recent attempts to improve on the previous staple staggered fused clapton.

First attempt I used twisted 26g and 5 strands of ribbon wire and then clapton'd with 32
Second attempt was twisted 28 with 3 strands. Seemed to be better for me.

I was SO challenged by the alien wire coil that i decided to work at it. I have to say, it is definitely the HARDEST coil i have ever tried. Huge props to TwistedMesses, Squidoode, OhmboyOC and others that have done youtube videos on this and make it look so easy. Their finish product is sweet. And as they point out...the wicking properties are very unique.

So in this final result i did three strands of straightened 26g Kanthal and run parallel wrapped with a de-cored (and stretched) 36g Nichrome80. Chose this combination of wire rather than anarchist (all nichrome) to try to keep this dual above .11 so could still use it on my ipv4 (which for me has been flawless despite the unfortunate issues others have had with theirs). I did 5 wraps on 3mm diameter screwdriver and the dual coil came to .0135 ohms.

It isn't as "tight" as i would like but this is the best results i could get after 5 attempts and frustrating fails.

I was searching on the instagram coil porn site today looking for a coil that caught my eye to build and found this one.
https://instagram.com/p/2jM08XIoiD/?taken-by=99wraps

And so i gave a try and changed it up just a bit for this trial run...
It is one strand of 30g KA1 and one strand of 30g Ni80 twisted clockwise.
Then repeated with another set twisted wires counterclockwise. Then slightly flattened to make into a zipper coil
Then I spaced it with a simple clapton coil made with 26g KA1 and 36g Ni80.

I am running it dual and it came out to .10 ohms on my ipv3 in my twisted messes RDA.
I have to say i am a bit surprised at the flavor.
I am using a fruit loop juice that yesterday i didn't like on another coil. Today, in this set up, i like it. Hmmmm

2015-07-15 16.30.24.jpg

Tomorrow i will play around with the idea a bit more and this time use a fused clapton 2-26 KA1 and wrapped in 40 Ni80 and three strands of 38g flattened and zippered.

So curiosity got me... i had to tweak and work and see what else i could do with this coil.

Second attempt: I did a version with fused clapton (28g KA1 x2 and wrapped with 40g ni80) and twisted zipper using 32g KA1 and 32g Ni80... 4/5 wraps (3mm) came to .16 ohms.

Finally i did a fused clapton ( 28g KA1 x2 and wrapped with 38g Ni80) and twisted zipper using 30g KA1 and 30g Ni80... 4/5 wraps (3mm) came to .13 ohms (which was what i was aiming for).

I like the way this fires up in stages... the ni80 first and kathal after. the vape is warm but not too much so and the flavor (probably due to surface area and all the nooks and crannies) is absolutely amazing. It does chuck some clouds too (on the Twisted Messes RDA).

I have to say this coil requires HUGE post holes, plenty of airflow, and a wide open build deck for this type of build (which i guess can be called a staged fused zippered clapton).

Today i made a fused clapton staggered with twisted nichrome.
26g Ka1 (x2) clapton'd with 38g KA1 then alternated wraps with twisted 26g Ni80
3mm diameter, 4/5 wrap, came to .10ohm
125 watts in ipv3 on twisted messes rda

here is a second attempt to make the ohms a bit higher (and coils smaller) to go on ipv4 in mutaiton x v3

28g KA1 x2 clapton'd with 40g KA1 then alternating wraps with twisted 28g Ni80.
3mm diameter, 4/5 wrap, came to .13 ohms
Is really a nice vape at 100watts with high VG2015-07-17 13.09.16.jpg

My first attempt at a staggered fused Clapton. Not pretty at all, but could have gone worse for a first try.

On the plus side, I have plain ole claptons down!

There are a couple ways to do the staggered clapton. The first, wrap two wires and pull one off to leave even spaces.
The second. Coil a normal clapton, slightly (stress the word slightly) stretch it. This way is harder but saves wire.
I also found going one step smaller in gauge for the final wrap makes it easier to hit the "gaps" just right.
Go slow. very slow.

i've done a couple SFC and I love em, they produce good clouds, this particular one was around .2 dual coil, but I find it easier and more convenient to wrap two wires parallel and then pull one off, with the wire crimped to a fishing swivel and then pulling one wire as you spin the drill, and when i fuse them and I get going and catch the groove and the wire is falling i just speed the drill up and remain calm, haha, if it messes up it messes up, 9 times outta 10 i have 1 or 2 mess ups but its better then going super slow cause once she starts catchin she catches 150610_065009.jpg 150609_100321.jpg

Sweet thread! Perhaps i'll post my builds here instead of the other one.
Yesterday's spaced alien coils in the Dotmod Petri:

Fyi: spacing this particular build does nothing for functionality. These vape better when wrapped traditionally. Spacing was simply an aesthetic touch.

Ever have a day when you can't build squat? That was today for me. Absolute fail repeatedly.

Not sure if my patience was low or my head was elsewhere... or if i just cant handle the one or two flaws.

The constant pursuit of the perfect, flawless coil if maddening. Maybe i am OCD. smirk.

Oh well... a good night's sleep and i will try again.

Keep the posts coming gang. always looking for inspiration.
