I personally run mine with dual vertical coils sitting directly over the air holes and spaced about 1mm up... (cotton wrapped on outside of coil not inside)
That said it shouldn't make a difference in leaking at all.
The best way I've found to prevent leaks AND maintain excellent flow of juices is to take the tails of my wick and snip them just even with the top (base) of the juice channels. From there I use a scalpel blade (though a needle would likely work too) to feather out the tips into longer extremely thin whisps that go all the way through the juice channel and poke out into the tank area about 1mm. once you screw it together (before adding the glass tank) snip the excess cotton sticking out.
By doing so I have not had a single leak and never a dry hit.
