E-cigarettes have been marketed as being a safe alternative to regular cigarettes
Uh, no. The FDA explicitly prohibits any marketing claim that that they are "safe" or "safer" without a MRTP, and they have never approved one. So while anyone who has even a modicum of sense knows they are safer than smoking, making such claims as part of one's marketing would quickly bring charges of "misbranding" from the FDA.

The most popular brand of e-cigarettes are VUSE
Rossum checks date on article. Yes, 2018. This statement was probably true in 2015...

iirc, 2015 was the year of the eGo and "twist" - or the never-ending mech-tubes - or even the STILL "hacking one together".

This is a student newspaper, so even if you ignore the ignorance and poor research in this piece (Vuse? fda lawsuit? ecig ingredients?) I find the most distressing part of it the fact that they think 50,000,000 is 6.5% of 328,000,000.

Do they not teach maths there?
