Do you have a hand-crank pump (or can get one at a Home Depot type store) that connects to a water hose? I don't know if it would work on your well, but it would work for pumping out of that river without going down the bank.

We put a hand crank pump on a water barrel. My stupid husband got one made for diesel. It quit working. If I can find one online for water, that might help with the well.

How deep is the 4 inch pipe and how far to water?
Cotton string with weight would work.

    .
Or use a trash pump, gas powered, not for the barrel but to draw from the river or well if it isn't too far down to water

Never heard of a 4" well casing, must be something someone jerry-rigged together.

No idea how deep the well is. I have seen water up to about 8 feet down the hole.

Tie a string around a metal nut, and see how deep it is.

If water is within 25 ft or so of the surface about any pump would work just need a foot valve with strainer on the bottom of some plastic pipe and a pump on the top. Fill/prime the plastic pipe and pump with water and turn on pump.

It just occurred to me that I have a small pump that fits on a hand drill that allows standard water hoses to be connected to both the IN and OUT connections. That would be considerably cheaper than the big hand-crank types.

    https://www.harborfreight.com/1-hp-...th-pressure-control-switch-950-gph-63407.html

    I have used those pumps.
Just need some plastic pipe a few fittings a shutoff hose bib for the output of the pump and a foot valve with strainer about $200 worth of stuff.
I am assuming that you can get 120V electricity to the pump.

if the water is that shallow a pump like this would work. would just need some pipe to go down below the water level and a foot valve/strainer.

That would be a pretty shallow well and subject to going dry in drought conditions. My well is 300 feet down (deep aquifer) and our water actually is an underground river created by snow melt in Alberta. One of my neighbors (rancher a couple miles down the road) has a 50-foot well and often runs dry in August.

During the dry season, I cannot see the bottom, even with a high powered flashlight.
I found a hand crank pump on Amazon I may just get for under $60.

At one time, this house had no plumbing. There was an outhouse and a well.

Same here. This house was built in 1930. The original homestead cabin, which is still here (I use it as a tack room) was from 1910. The highway in front of our property was a dirt track wagon trail (now called U.S. Highway 212).

Phillip made one. A 60 mph gust destroyed it. His welds did not hold. Never mind the works that might pump water. He never tried that.

I think a simple hand pump should work well. It's supposed to pump water up to 25 feet deep.

We were told this house was built some time between the 1920s and the 1950s. It's the only house in the neighborhood with turbines on the roof. We have 2. Nothing was insulated. We insulated the attic. I covered up the asbestos with siding that helps insulate. We replaced some of the double hung windows that were rotting. The iron weights come in handy for some projects.

@Jimi, I hear you about orthopedic doctors. I feel the same way. Had my go-rounds with them as well. In the beginning of my mess, I got a lot more help from a physical therapist than I ever got from the doctors. I will say I hope your problem resolves, but perhaps more appropriately, I'll say I hope you can find a way to stay comfortable and not injure it any worse. It's hard to take once it gets to the point that you're hurting all the time, even when you aren't standing or walking.

Good morning, everyone. Been up since 3:30 am. Just wide awake then, and with a headache. Had to get up. So I'll regret that about 4 this afternoon when I still have an hour of work to go and I'm struggling to stay awake. Coffee time.

Hey @JuicyLucy not sure I think the "matchy matchy" is nonsense, if it bothers you to not have things match. It bothers me in odd ways. Purses and wallets, other leather or textile items I carry in my purse. Stresses me out when they don't match. Husband thinks I'm nuts about that, but he's got his own oddness when it comes to consistency. I said something in another thread about playing musical tanks when a new mod showed up the other day - go through that every time. Does everyone? I don't know, but probably, at least to some extent.

Also with drip tips, dang, how much difference they make to how a tank draws! Don't think I'll ever feel wrong about being OCD about a drip tip.

Good morning everybody. Hope you slept well.

Thanks for your kind response. :)

Re coffee, I love it too, although not the standard fare that it seems most younger people like these days. No Starbucks for me, thanks. I drink a not-very-dark Italian roast made one cup at a time in my little soft-pod coffee maker, or I make a whole pot in my 1960s pot-bellied electric percolator that I found on eBay. Usually only do that on days that the hubbs and I are both at home; otherwise I waste half of it.

Just didn't want you to end up like me and Jimi falling and getting owie knees...

Speaking of which, today the forecast was for partly sunny (yup, they hit that) with winds 25 gusting to 35 (they blew that! - yes, pun intended). I had to go see a neighbor to buy wheat for the chickens and after I cleared the gate and the sheltering lilac hedges, I tried to get out of the truck and go back to shut the gates. I couldn't open the door. Did I lock it accidentally? No. So push harder you weak old phart. I did, but to get it open, I had to push it with my foot. Then the wind slammed it hard. OK, so I shut the gates and struggled to get the door open and climbed in and even though I thought I was holding it securely, it slammed on my left leg. OUCH! Damn it all to hell! That wind was at least 50 mph or even worse... 60? 70?. Then when I came home and we went out to do chores, Lannie pointed out that there was something wrong with the homestead cabin door - as in, it was missing. We went over to see what the problem was and it was shattered -- literally -- it looked as if it had been hit with a SWAT team battering ram: nothing but pieces. Tomorrow my "to do" list has a priority: make a new door.
