Which is king of the Sony VTC 18650 batteries? VTC4A, VTC5A, or VTC6A?

All the the “A” variants outperform their non-A counterparts, e.g., the VTC4A outperforms the VTC4, but which is the best performing “A” variant? Which is the best Sony 18650 as of early March, 2018?

I tested the VTC4A, VTC5A, and VTC6A at 25A down to 3.2V and the winner was clearly the VTC6A. It easily outperforms all of the other Sony VTC 18650’s.

The VTC6A and VTC5A are close in performance at the start but the VTC6A’s higher capacity holds its voltage up longer, resulting in longer run time. The VTC4A, due to its lower capacity, was the lowest performer of the three. But the VTC4A is still a damn good cell. It’s just that the other two are even better.

This was a preliminary test with the cells I had available as of mid February, 2018. These cells will be retested when they become more available and these test results are subject to change at any time.

A couple of notes...

  • I do not know who has any of these in stock.

  • I do not know when anyone will have any of these in stock.

  • Your VTC3, VCT4, VTC4A, VTC5, VTC5A, and VTC6 cells are not suddenly crappy performers because of this test. Those are all still good choices.

  • I have not tested the VTC5D, or know its true ratings, but I will post the test results when I do.

They added them a little while ago. Hopefully it's sooner than later

Hope you are correct.

Seems like Dyson bought up all the 5A's for quite a while.
Seems like they would do the same for the 6A for a longer lasting battery pack.

Edit: I just saw the continuation. I don't doubt that will be the case. Just have to hope we get the 2nds (Bs, Cs etc) if they are limiting their purchases to A batteries only

Yeah I have been able to get the 5As without a problem for the shop and personal without much interruption. But I might have been buying between the Dyson buyouts. When was this?

Last year. I think that Dyson bought up all the VTC5A's for a while there.
And maybe into the end of 2016? Not exactly sure of the timeframe.
This is all per comments that mooch has made.

I was still just rocking 25Rs in all regs then. 20Rs/VCT4s in Mechs. But as it relates to this hopefully that period has already come to pass lol... One can only hope.

imho the best for mechs now is the VTC5A.
But the 6A will be better when it eventually shows up.

Hmm... Unless that 6A somehow gets 25Amps I can't see how. It all depends on what you use it for. Builds, Responsiveness, Single Battery vs Multi. But for Mechs I prefer the safety of Amperage and Low internal resistance. The 5A is a great general battery, even for Mechs, that I definitely agree with.

Seems like the 6A can handle 25Amps with ease re the charts. I'm not sure it's CDR is quite that high.

It's temperature limited to 25A. But it is fairly high, comparatively to other batteries that can handle higher Amperage with temp limitations.
