I have been using rayon balls to wick for about 8 months now. I love it. I get a perfect wick every time with outstanding flavor and wicking properties like nothing else.

I always see people posting with various different issues they are having with their cotton wicks. I never see anyone making these posts about rayon though. I figure this is either because A. Not many people use rayon, or B. Rayon is just such an amazing wick that nobody has any trouble with it so never has to post for help.

So just how many of you use this heat resistant hoover-like super wick?

I used to love it, the flavors were so clean and crisp, seemed to outlast cotton by a mile. But for whatever reason, it makes me cough now. Haven't used it in a long time. :(
You'll read a lot of negative posts about it for various reasons. Pretty sure there's an old thread rolling around in here about it.

I have one of the big boxes of rayon. While it is not a go to for daily vaping I have no aversion to it and will regularly use it when testing juice mixes because it is much less expensive to use than CB for these one and done tests. Will also use it for juices that are darker and dont absorb into cotton as readily. Some of the store bought juices containing vanilla in high concentrates are like this.

I can taste rayon but it doesn't bother me and am used to the first few pulls having that odd muted rayon taste, but it disappears very quickly.

I started out using rayon and have never used anything else. I love the way it wicks. I can't compare taste between that and cotton, since I've never used cotton, but after the first two or three "new wick" hits (which doesn't taste bad to me at all), it just tastes like juice. And the wicks last a long time before I need to swap them out. I guess that makes me a Rayonati, too? ;)

That new rayon taste can be eradicated by priming the coil first :)

I used to like it a lot! I’ve since switched to senshido and have stuck with that for about two years now.
I do still use it from time to time but only with one tank -the erlkoenigin.

The reason being the way it has to cut and still wick works perfect with that tank.

Personally I like rayon and the flavor it provides, I just find that cotton tends to hold lore liquid when used on rdas.

Gives me dry throat
Can't stand the taste
If you ever get a dry/burnt hit it's the nastiest vomit inducing gag ever
Can't stand Rayon

As far as performance, meh that's very subjective for I've found Koh gen Do to be able to keep up with it. Then for the "oh it lasts so long", hell my coils will gunk up long before Koh gen Do, Native Wicks Platinum or Cotton Bacon Prime will ever begin to break down so that's a very moot point.

I cannot vote because my selection is not there. You need a selection for "depends on what device I am using". I use Rayon Exclusively for my RDA's, but for my Tanks I only use Koh Gen Doh Japanese Cotton because it wicks better in a tank IMHO. Just my experience with them, YMMV!

Happy Vaping!

Its still present for me no matter what I do. I can soak it for long periods of time and the first few times its heated there is a particular taste.

I discovered Koh gen Do just before I started using rayon. As far as cotton goes that stuff is the shit! I'm in the same boat as well when it comes to longevity. I have to rewick every couple days because of coil gunk, so wick longevity has never been an issue for me.

The break in taste of Rayon is one of the nastiest things I have ever tasted, but I always just burn a few mls of juice through it before I take my first pull, and as long as I didn't wick it too tight the rayon flavor is usually gone.

If you get a vomit inducing dry hit from rayon then you definitely did something wrong. You can tell that it needs a drip long before you get into gagging coughing dry hit territory.

All of that said, if rayon got banned by the FDA and the only thing left was KGD, it wouldn't be a huge loss to me.

Another benefit I have found using rayon is how easy it is to switch flavors without re-wicking. Because of its heat resistant properties it is easy to just dry the wick out and after a couple drips the old juice flavor is gone.

Dry and burned hits happen every now and again, wicking was right shit just happens every now and again. I get a dry/burnt hit once in a blue moon with anything, just with Rayon it's absolutely fucking horrendous.

I just fucking hate Rayon but wicking material is all subjective to each individual and one should use what works for them.

tru words...Vic are you a genhead?...and the only thing better than ss mesh is a porous ceramic wick..except they are too pricey and to fragile...when the Mesh Jihad comes we will convert the world to the one true wick.

I've heard that SS is great. Do you just roll it up and stick it in the coil? Does it work well in an RDA or is it mostly for RDTA's?

Well, it's your thread, darlin', you just tell em to stuff a sock in it and stay on task if need be. ;)
You've got a good memory. In my defense that was a deal thread and I kept checking the notifications on my phone thinking someone was inquiring about an item.

neither..it works well in Genisis atomizers..though it can be used in some drippers and a few RTAs,and I have used it in a few squonking RDAs.. you have to build the wick or "roll it" and then oxidize the stainless steel mesh by torching and quenching it in water or VG a few times in order to create a barrier between the kanthal coil and the ss wick so the coil doesn't short out. You can wrap the coil first and slide the wick through the coil, but most genny users wrap their coils around the wick itself.

Why does it only work in some RDA's? I would like to try it but I only have 1 genny that has a fairly small deck anyway. Would it work in a Sherman 25, Kennedy 25 2-post, or a Reload RDA? I have some SS mesh. I'll have to try it.

someone who has built with mesh alot can get it to work in several kinds of atties but mesh works best in gennys....it does not have the flexibilty of cotton even when you cut it on the 45. you can build what is called a slug wick but it works better with RDAs with side airholes not bottom airports. it is usually a vertical build not a horizontal build..you may want to start out on a genny and see if you can make that work, then tackle drippers.

I'm in the same boat as @Teresa P. I used rayon for awhile, but then figured out that the rayon was causing me to cough. My go to wick is KGD. I've tried pretty much everything except SS mesh, but I keep going back to KGD. I'm not a wick zealot, use what works for you!

I really can't explain why I developed such an aversion to it, I really liked it. My new favorite is Angorabbit, but that doesn't get rave reviews either.

While not exactly the same as described a similar concept. The video of the dude making this is crazy.

There is an image somewhere but cant find it of three coils spaced with mesh as a wick. One the cleverest designs of such I have ever seen.

yeah it's fun coil porn but that is about all it is...at a practical vaping level it doesn't work that well...mesh needs to be constantly wet the wick wants to sit in juice or be drenced in juice....a mesh slug wick will actually sit on the deck to be able to sit in juice.

I have never done it personally. I admire it from a pure coil porn perspective.

oh its brilliant..and it would give a great vape, but you would have to drip it every other pull.

Something like this may be good for tasting.

yeah it is ...and I will build like that in a dripper just for tasting...I can try a juice, and then dry burn the build totally dry and then put a new juice on the coil....but then you could do the same thing with a big alien coil without a cotton wick

I think I am going to grab some mesh and stop using rayon. I can dedicate an RDA to this purpose and have it at the ready all the time. When done testing put a few drops of raw VG to keep it from rusting. looked at that picture a dozen times and never put these two task together until just now. Thanks VU, always learning.

Yeah, I was testing the mesh in the Wasp - I loved the flavor. My issue is merely that I get so damned irked when I can't roll up a nice, neat, curving-mesh.

did you try using mesh cut 45% to the grain.or diagonally...The Wasp is about the only atty that makes cotton tolerable to me.

Since I started rolling my own coils I have only used Koh Gen Doh.
Itty bitty tanks to the Aromamizer Plus it has always provided great vaping.
Rayon? I am put off by the 'Not too much not too little, get it just right, make it barely squeak' thing. I also have no issue with the KGD, so why put my lovely coil assistant through rayon worship training?

I know this thread is dead already, but I want to mention something about this. Recently I started cleaning my coils with the rayon wick still in them. I just use some distilled water to rinse the wick and coils, then brush the gunk off them with a tiny wire brush, then rinse again until the wicks are pure white. This way I get to clean my coil and get any sugary buildup off the wicks without having to do the whole dry burn and rewick job. After I clean them I just burn off the moisture and burn a little juice through it before I take a pull.

It might sound like a pain, but it is really pretty easy and is less work than re-wicking. You might be able to do this with cotton as well, but I haven't tried it. I've been doing this for a couple weeks and now and I haven't had to re-wick a coil since I started.

going through that much trouble it's just as easy or easier to pop a wick in IMO. Besides, I can't stand Rayon for I dislike the taste and especially hate the dry throat if gives me.

I'm not trying to convert you to rayon, you already mentioned that you don't like it. I was just responding to the claim that the longevity of the wick is a moot point. I can tell you from experience though that the 30 seconds it takes to rinse and brush the coil is much less trouble than rewicking.
