I have a friend that used one of his nickel wound guitar strings and wrapped it into 2 coils instead of making Clapton coils or letting me make him clapton's or fused claptons and put them in his RDA. I tried to tell him he needs to research that to make sure it was even safe to do in the first place but he just went ahead and did it. Has anyone ever heard of doing this and is there any danger to it.

    Thanks

People who do things like this are WHY it says "Do Not Eat" on packets of silica gel.

Sounds like a bad idea. While you can figure out the resistance of the strings your friend has no way of knowing what those strings are actually composed of. Simple round wire is cheap and purpose built, clapton spool wire can be had for cheap as well. This is the kind of stuff we end up hearing about on the news when it goes wrong.

What a knucklehead. I'm looking at my Elixir Nanoweb strings for acoustic and the box states that the 3 wound strings have a coating to prevent contamination and corrosion. The wound strings are steel wrapped with bronze alloy wire. The 3 steel strings have an anti-rust plating. Andria is right, your friend's purpose in life is to serve as a warning to others.

I've made a build (without vaping it) using pure nickel guitar strings (guess it was the d-string to be more precise) and have put it on an ohm meter. Came out at about .36 ohm and it's even had a nice glow haha.

I would have never vaped that build though. You never know the wire quality and if some sort of coating has been used. Leave alone residues from the factory. Way too dangerous.

If it tastes funny, maybe cleanse palate with a Tide pod.

They were either d'addario or elixir because he uses the same strings I do unless he was talking about his Gibson acoustic strings but I tried to explain all the same things. You don't know the core and they put chemicals on the strings and so on but I was hoping I would get comments along the same line as what I was saying to show him. He hasn't done it yet hes saying he wants to try to do it later today so hopefully this will help change his mind.

I like the comment about do not eat on silica packs because it seems like we have to have stupid labels on everything now a days and theoretically we should be smarter today than any time in history but it seems like we keep taking steps back. I swear the world is doomed that people that eat tide pods might be our leaders one day.

Sorry for the tangent but thank you for the comments I will be showing him this and still lecture him about how hes still building too low ohms for his mechs SMH

If he insists on using them, ask if you can video journal his journey, for posterity.

I might just have to do that as much as I don't want him to do it cause of the chemicals. And since I'm a paramedic I can have my med bag ready if the chemicals affect him. But I'm still in hope that he will decide it's a bad idea

I would be less concerned with the immediate affects of any chemicals than the possibility for mechanical fault. Guitar strings are not designed for voltage like what they will be receiving when he hits the go button. Thats the part that is more concerning. What if one of the inner cores melts, causes that springy wire to short and causes an explosion? It is not beyond the realm of possibility.

That's a very real possibility and sadly hes always been the type to push the limits of his batteries in his mech and not just to the limit but passing the limit it could explode at any time even with the coils he usually uses. I've tried to show him steam engine to calculate the amps and volts but he takes more advice from bad YouTube videos than me or vape shops. I've always said he is one I would have never recommended vaping to just because how he is

If he does blow himself up, try and make it look like he was doing something other than vaping. We have already had enough bad press this year. Stupid people doing stupid shit is not good for the gander.

Ain't that the truth. I've even had people scared to be near me when I'm using my regulated. Even when I try to explain to them ohms law in simple terms or show them documents it doesn't matter they believe the media like it's the bible. Can't stand people that won't expand their mind and have a true debate or conversation. I'm always wrong with anything i.e. ohms, popcorn lung, safer than smoking, etc. But the media told them one thing so that's the final word. I deal with it too when people find out I conceal carry but you see enough shit as a medic it changes your perception you see what people are really like

A set of D'addario strings is about $5 on the average and you can get 100 Feet of wire on a spool for less which is meant for vaping.

The problem is if your dumb enough to do it your probably not thinking of the economics and when he told me about it he said they were strings he will never use I don't know if he switched gauges or what. Strings must be cheaper in your area I bought some for my takamine the other day and they were 14.99 and 24.99 for my 12 string acoustic. And now I got to fork over more for a set of elixir strings for my baritone

D'addario is what I was taking about which are the cheapest for an electric guitar.

I think the Elixirs are worth every penny. They last a long time and maintain their sound quite well.

I think the idea for the clapton coil came from the guitar string.

The idea for the automobile came from the horse and buggy but If I ran out of gas I sure as hell wouldn't be looking for a horse to strap to the front of my car.

I agree I love elixir I've had nano web strings last on my acoustic for over a year before they lose the bright tones and get harder to slide on and that's without a string coating wipe down my d'addario phosphorus coated last the longest probably 3 months and I used a string cleaner and wiped them down every time i played. If i can't get those two and I'm desperate i get Gibson and with any guitar my last choice is ernie ball

I've also tried to tell my buddy that he can do a simple twisted dual coil or parallel dual coil and still get good flavor and clouds. Hell I dont use clapton's for the most part it's just dual twisted and I'm happy.

They’re actually called Claptons because they look like guitar strings. They’re named after the electric guitarist Eric Clapton from the 60s
I mean that’s what I heard and it makes sense, unless the first guy to wrap wire was named Clapton lol

It was Eric Clapton that invented the clapton coil during one of his epic snow benders. He ran out of cigarettes and needed something to vape so he invented a coil that let him burn tobacco and some other things. Which makes him the real father of vaping.

This is not true at all. I am just making that up. :giggle:
