Found my 30 watt iron - low enough watts?

I have not soldered for many years, and wasn't an expert way back then. I'm getting ready to solder to a VAMO board for one project, and to other parts like a Mosfset for another. I just discovered that my old pencil soldering iron is 30W.

Think 30W too hot for soldering onto delicate parts?

Thanks - Randy

No, but you need to get the specs on the components you are soldering to figure out how long you can apply heat to them, and at what temperature.

Most standard "pen" irons are weak and fine to use on any small thing. Just make sure you use flux and clean the tip with steel wool every few minutes so you don't have to apply heat for too long. Also, don't apply heat to the board, apply heat to the wire about an inch away from the board.

30w is on the high end of what I'd use on a pcb board, or any sensitive components. 15 or 20 is more along the lines of what you'd want, but 30 is doable. Just be attentive to applying heat to the board, and keep the tip clean.
