Hello, everyone. I hope this is the right thread for this issue.

I'm having an issue with my RDA/coils (will go over my build and what i have tried below) that when I draw for 4+ seconds, I get a bad taste in the cotton.
When reading, note that I have been building for a few years now and have tried most if not all of the newbie stuff.
My coils are well wicked, and well juiced. Is there something different I can try to keep this from happening? I would like to take long draws without the bad taste after 4 seconds.
    Here is my build-

    Dead Rabbit RDA
    Sigeli Kaos Z + Dual VTC5A authentics
    Simple Dual 22g 316L SS, 6 wrap, 3mm diameter.
Airflow all the way open, running this .12 ohm build at about 65 watts.

I have tried different wicking methods. Scottish Roll, Dragon, normal wicking, more cotton, less cotton, being careful not to choke it off, ect. And nothing is doing the trick for me.

Will take any suggestions or help I can get.

    Heya and welcome to VU.

After you get the bad taste, is the RDA completely dry and you need to rejuice or is there enough juice left?
Did you try leaving the most juice well space possible with your cotton?
With that I mean building so the cotton barely reaches the botton of the well, so there's the maximum of space for the liquid. That often helps with juice transportation to the coil, too.

The RDA is still very wet after the bad taste.
I have NOT tried to leave a little bit of space between the juice well and cotton- my cotton is always well flush with the bottom of the juice well. I will give that a shot .

Have you recently change cotton brand?

Also same question about wire brand?

what type of juice are you using, is it something new or a go to you always use? Is it super sweet

How long after a fresh re-wick does this occur?

Does the taste start as soon as you start vaping from cold or only chain vaping?

When you say tastes bad ..is it burnt taste or something else?

Edit: assume from your OP you check for hot spots and didn’t over heat the SS316L when dry firing

I've actually been using the same cotton for the longest time. It's a facial cotton from Sephora called Shiseido.

My wire brand is Master of Clouds and has always been.

I'm vaping on Milk of the Poppy by Vapetasia. It's not super sweet, but it's not custardy either.

After I reinsert a fresh wick, whether I have it in for 5 minutes or 3 days, it still does the same thing.

The taste occurs when I start from a cold vape AND after I've been chain vaping about 7-10 hits, but it only happens after a longer draw of about 4 or 5 seconds.

Edit: I've also tried increasing the wattage to get a fuller vape so that I don't have to draw as long, but I get the same effect.

And hmm.. for the taste, it just tastes like dry/burning cotton EVEN THOUGH the wick is completely soaked as far as I can tell.

I also do not over heat my wires while dry burning. I run them at about 20-30 watts a few times to make sure they're heating from the inside out and checking for hot spots.

Cool thanks that helps eliminate the obvious stuff

....Have you tried other gauges out of interest? 24,26g for instance

    Also mucked about with positioning

I used to do a lot of dual paralell 26g, and I didn't really have the issue with those and if I did it was very rare. I just love the flavor this SS is giving to me, it seems like my build is perfect for what I like, but if I have to change it to get away from the bad ending taste I might have to. Short draws are fine (2seconds) but long draws suck. Literally.

With positioning, there's not much room to do that on the dead Rabbit since the "postless" deck sits up so high and close to the airflow at the top. I could try positioning them farther away from each other (there's about 4 mm of space in between each coil), but I'd have to be careful with them touching the top cap as I've had issues with coils shorting out in the past because of that.

Have you tried spacing the wraps a bit too? Just thinking with such high mass the middle is not getting enough airflow hitting it from top to keep cool enough when drawing the juice through..spacing may help with that

You know, I've never actually thought of that. I'm going to give that a shot plus the suggestion mentioned above to leave some space between the cotton and the juice well. How far apart woild you recommend spreading them out? Just a hair? Or are we talking about doubling the surface area?

Just half a mm or so mate don’t need to go crazy with it at first ..if that doesn’t work try 1mm

    this sort of gap

Ooooh Aaaah, so purty. What RDA is that one? It seems similar to the Gorge.

My only suggestion for @Miltonius1338 might be to try Rayon instead of cotton. Sometimes when I use cotton (Muji organic from Japan), it'll start to retain too much juice and then it kind of spoils. That at times can come over as a bad taste for long drags. So, I swap out to some rayon which releases about 97% of the juice during any length of firing time. It stays wet but without trapping juice. The condensation keeps it wet until it starts to offer up a crisp vapor, then I squonk.

I write this as not intending a flame war over cotton or rayon being better. I use both at differing times. It's just wick material not precious commodities like water or air. Also I'm not saying that for sure rayon would suit either. It's offered as yet another option to consider. Not like we lack options. *grin*

Could potentially dropping the wattage down and purging give you the ability for a long drag without the coils heating up for too long?

Top one is hadaly, bottom is the wasp nano ...sort of similar to the gorges deck different screw’s and ends on the gorge, also air comes in at an angle on the gorge as apposed to straight on with the nano

Beautiful, Kingpin. I have spaced out my coils at the recommend length, and it actually seems to be working a lot better now. This is with the Scottish Roll technique. Thank you so much.

MagicMist, I've never even heard of Rayon. It's new to me, I will have to order some just to try it out.

Okay, gotcha. That's why it looked so familiar. D'oh! *lol* Got two Wasp Nanos & a Gorge. Had not seen the Hadaly internals. Now, having seen that might be a consideration. Damn shinyitis. I still need to find a Pancake or Pancake styled RDA. @Train seems to like those, figured I'd give one a go meself. It was he that inspired me to try a Gorge. @The Cromwell got me hooked on the Wasps & those Eleaf Pico Squeezes. Not used any of my Goons in a while.

I’ll look into the pancake not heard of it until you mentioned it.

Train got me onto the gorge as well haha ...also have the Flave 22 on my list of stuff to get (think he likes that also?) ...got the 24mm variant find it’s slightly better than the gorge but not by much thinking the 22 will do it justice

Have to say I’m not a massive fan of the wasp although for its price it’s hard to knock definately one of the easiest RDAs to mount coils on and it’s very forgiving with squonking ...but prefer the gorge out of the two personally.

If you don’t wanna fork out for the hadaly which is getting harder to find ...the shenray clone is very good ...have both the shenray clone and the authentic now ....that pic above is the clone

I DO like the Flave - it's my current favorite!
I'm still running the Gorge, but I have several Flave 22's. Got authentic first, but I will admit to acquiring a clone - and it's pretty darned good too - possibly some fitment precision difference, but an o-ring could probably fix that...

I like them with a fat drip-tip...and they come with a proprietary tip. Fiddling around though, I found an o-ring size that allows me to run a standard 810...

    TheOringStore!

Pretty certain this is the size that made it so most 810's could fit a Flave...

Alright, now I'll need to go get the YFTK model off of Fasttech. That was not what I was thinking about though. I was thinking about some kind of post-less deck thing. No big deal either way. *chuckles* All you shinyinitis enablers running around keeping me chasing squirrels. Gee, there's no retiring for me despite noting in 2016 I would have had 20 yrs in Navy had I stayed in. Between y'all and my witch, erm wife, I'll get no rest. I think next week she has me slated to go off with the Jupiter based aliens to attend some weird seminary of goats. :) I dunno, be a scribble all de day.

That just might do the trick. I say this because I have a Vaporized Nomads Pangaea rta that I can't get to act right. I've used round wire and claptons, even staged heating coils, changed from Ni80 to ss316, changed resistance from series @ .3 down to .09 and everywhere in between(always dual coil btw), post diameter, changed wicking technique, adjusted wattage, even thinned out my juice. Even with the airflow wide open it still burns. Never dawned on me to space the wire. DUH. I'll try it and see if it works. Thanks.
