HI all! Ok I gotta question...if I seem dumb I sorry. I was talking to a girl at my new job last night..and she said that her boyfriend has tried the cigalikes to quit smoking (he was getting them for free from work) and coughed like crazy cuz he can't have water vapor in his lungs? I have not heard of this....he obviously hasn't had any luck quitting and she asked me if there is a way to vape to quit but without this issue?

It's isn't water vapor that is being inhaled actually, it's more of the PG/VG in the juice. Where the water is, is in the exhale.

Vaping takes the moisture out of you and that becomes part of the exhaled vapor. Thats why vapers need to drink lots of water or they can become dehydrated.

It's vapor, not steam. :)

Many reasons why he might be coughing: pulling too hard (it's not a cig, you don't vape the same way), too strong of nic, just a shitty cig-a-like, crappy juice, too much PG, etc.

I think he was using the cheap cigalikes ....from like a gas station....so I suggested she talk to a local B&M to help find the right ratio. I just wanted to make sure I was giving her correct info....

He's probably coughing because he's inhaling the vapor wrong and as far as water in the lungs,
I could see the vapor depositing a surplus of water in the lungs (taken from the surrounding moisture in the atmosphere). But I could also see it having the opposite effect - taking water from your lungs, leaving you with a deficit.

Your lungs do readily absorb water, so in small quantities - like I would imagine with the e-cig, it probably is not a problem, and probably would not cause pneumonia.

I really have no idea though; that's just my guess.

Actually, because propylene glycol is an antimicrobial, and because it has been shown to kill cold and flu viruses, there is some research and evidence to suggest that the e-cig actually helps people avoid colds and the flu. Propylene glycol is used in hospital air filtration systems specifically for this reason (as a disinfectant).

But the concentrations will be much higher with an e-cig, so by no means am I saying it will have this effect and no other negative ones!

What cigs did they smoke before?

If you go from an ultra-light cigarette to some 18-24mg cig-a-like that is likely made with 70/30 PG/VG juice, ya gonna cough your brains out.

Also, vaping gives ya nicotine at a much slower rate of absorption than a cigarette, but also potentially MORE total nicotine. Nicotine is harsh on the throat. It and PG provide that "throat hit" you got from smoking. AKA, burning your mucus membranes with smoke inhalation. ;-)

I think thats excellent advice to give her. The thing with cigalikes, is we dont know exactly whats in them. Some of them do have additional ingredients other than pg/vg, flavor and nicotine. Most likely he was pulling to hard and just not used to the difference. Good job looking out and pointing people in the right direction :D

I am not sure what he smokes now....but that does make sense. I did think of the pg/vg ratio and how people have allergies to one or the other...That is why I pointed her to a trusted B&M that I go to...I am hoping that they go there and get the correct ratio and everything set up for them. I did explain also that what I vape in my iTaste is NOT what is in the cigalikes so will be a difference. I recommended they get an ego starter kit and try it. If anything they are out a little money and possibly on way to a healthier life!

We all have water vapor in our lungs. Part of the air we breath.

Perhaps he has an issue with PG? Or not drinking enough water?

But you did say he was using Cigalikes that he was getting for free. If he has been chain vaping Njoys that could be an issue. Last I checked in the fine print they indicated that you should not take more than 10 puffs an hour. Crazy high nic content but I forget what it is.

that's a good point, especially since a lot of the cigalikes are marketed by big tobacco. so who knows what is in them? hell, they might be putting in hundreds of the same chemicals as they do in stinkies!

What about having him try one of your devices to see what it's supposed to feel/taste like?

Unfortunately I do not work with him...so I can't have him try mine. But all my other co workers that want to try it I always bring extra tips or "condoms" to have them try it and they all want to try one with flavors they like! Little bit of good comes out of just talking to people.

Got it. I guess the best course for them would be the B&M like you said - he'll get to sample different flavors while they're there too :)

Could also just be a weaksauce excuse, jussayin'.
Reading this post made me literally laugh out loud .... My Brother in law was forced to start Vaping as part of a mandate imposed on him by his Surgeon just prior to having surgery. After his surgery and subsequent recovery period (once his Dr quit checking on him) he started having all kinds of issues with his Vape Gear. He also started to experience frequent coughing which ultimately led him to go back to his beloved Marlboro Reds. I offered to help him with his gear and to start making him juice with a higher VG ratio (High PG is often the coughing culprit) and it was funny to see how quickly he turned down all my attempts to help. He was just not ready to quit.

I spent a year catering to a friend who had nothing but issues. She couldnt find a juice she liked, none of the tanks gave her a good hit, all the devices gave her problems (ok the last two are true, she has very bad luck). It took her, finally, saying I dont want to smoke anymore, now she has 3 or 4 juices that she vapes and a device that mostly works. Now if I can convince her that slim is not always good, she'd have an awesome tank, but, I learned I cannot force her. She needs to reach these conclusions ;)

Same thing with my wife.
I can't even begin to guess at the amount of money I've spent on juice/equipment over the past two and a half years.
She always says, 'Ooo. I like that. Can I have it?'
She tries it once and it goes in a drawer.
Don't tell her, but I've actually started showing her stuff that I want and when she ends up not using it, I commandeer it for myself.
Got me a couple nice mods that way ;)
Ironic thing is, she is the one that got me started vaping...

I personally used to cough on gas station cigs but could blow clouds. I blame poor airflow. Try to get him to try an ego or something.

If you remember didn't we all cough and hack up crud when we first started vaping?
I know I did and it's because you usually are trying to "vape like you smoked"
taking
deep inhales
. Pg and nicotine are really hard on your throat, nose and lungs plus very drying.
Unless you've had an allergy test from your doctor I doubt too many are "allergic" to pg.
I've heard many many stories of folks who claim to be but never get tested.
Vaping can be hard on your mucus membranes until you become acclimated.

Could just be starting to hack up all the shit that got trapped in his lungs from all the years of smoking.
I coughed up brown/black shit for a month or two.
It got lighter and lighter in color until it went away.

So I got all this info from you guys and was ready to talk to her and help ...and she never showed back up to work! I feel like I wasted everyone's time here.

You haven't wasted our time, its good to ask these things, maybe in time she will come back to the issue and you'll be fully armed with answers for her:):)

Too Funny. Thanks for the story.

Been vaping for 2 years, and before that I was smoking filterless cigaretts "rollies" for years.
When starting out, I too would get an itchy cough after vaping all day. Plus I had the constant feeling of walking out of a hot steamy bathroom, like after a shower. It's hard to describe, but I totally understand the notion of "water vapor in my lungs". It has more to to with being a smoker that being a vaper, because after a solid week of vaping, that feeling goes away completely. I've been on the forums since 2011 and have seen this issue many times. Just stick with vaping, the feeling passes.

Advice: Since the nicotine in vapor is quickly absorbed, (faster then smoke) there is no reason to hold in a drag. Tell him to take quick drags. And while exhaling, do so through the nose. The membranes in the nasal cavity absorb nicotine from ecig vapor almost twice as efficiently as the lungs - according to a scientist on a popular electronic cigarette forum. That could help the person vape less per craving - i.e more efficient nicotine intake.

I wish the guy much success.
