How has the majority of the public reacted to you vaping?

Hi people, I thought I would write this out after an experience my fiancee had whilst out shopping with her dad, something I have also experienced countless times.

My fiancee was waiting outside the local shopping centre for her Dad, and along comes a cigarette smoker.

She then went on to tell my fiancee 'how dangerous' her Sigelei 50W V2 was, as she had read "how dangerous those things are for you on the internet".

My fiancee responded I am inhaling vapour, made by my fiancee, that I know to be safe. She tried to explain exactly when a mod can be dangerous-for example a mech with a awful battery and super low build-but the woman was convinced that what Cheyenne was using was horrendously dangerous, all whilst smoking a cigarette.

Cheyenne explained what the lady was smoking has over 2000 cancer causing chemicals, hers has zero, and only contains 4 substances.

She stated "I would rather stick to these, much safer", and to her, they actually WAS safer. If I was there I could of explained more, but my fiancee said well thats your choice, the NHS are even going to prescribe these in the future to help people stop smoking, but she just tutted and walked off.

I have had similar experiences-people telling me 'You do know they can blow up' and then I explain I am using a regulated mod, not a mech, and then try to explain simply amp draw and ohms law-its pretty safe as long as you are not stupid, that kind of thing.

Me and my mum have noticed people smoking cigarettes, actually move out of the way to avoid any vapour from my device (I'm not chucking massive clouds in the street, probably around the same amount a cigarette puts out) as if they are going to get poisoned or something. Me and my mum just laugh at their ignorance.

So, does anyone else experience this a lot? Or is this more a UK thing with people being uneducated about vaping?

Even when I tell them I own quite safe batteries and collect mods and know how to be safe-they still warn me that its going to blow up. I do like to point out at this point if they really are going for it that cigarettes have caused many house fires-the stories you have heard are so publicised as they are few and far between.

It would be cool to hear others stories-have you ever had someone really get vexed at you for vaping outdoors? I actually have.

But, I would rather have a healthy set of lungs and not get cancer and also not smell like an ashtray, so its a worthy trade off.

So far, I only met smokers, that knew nothing about vaping, or some, but wanted to learn more about it. Just yesterday, I was asked by one. After long intro to what vaping is all about, his last question was "And it really works". Telling him, it does, he said, he would look into other devices (other than cigalikes, since he tried those). I told him to get here on VU and learn more about it.

Yes I've had the same thing happen. I try to politely explain that what those stories aren't telling you is that it happened to some idiot using an unregulated mod with cheap batteries and using it incorrectly. But some people just don't want to hear it.

I was at a casino, in the smoking section because you get funny looks vaping in the nonsmoking section and this woman next to me started waving her hands in front of her face to dispel my "smoke". I just looked at her! Are you kidding me??? First of all, you're in the SMOKING SECTION. And secondly it isn't smoke, you moron! I didn't bother saying anything, some people just aren't worth wasting your breath. I did, however, continue to enjoy my vape and she eventually left. I'm sorry but if your going to hang out in the smoking section you should expect to get smoke in your face! Or vapor

Save your breath man. Ignorance is bliss and nothing you can say is going to make them think differently.
It's just like politics and religion, once they've made their minds up no ammount of fact or science will change it....

I have managed to convince 3 people in total. Sometimes the elderly are actually interested, and think they are nice, and remark that they "like the smell". But I have mostly been met with the opposite, and situations like Cheyennes are far more common.

It could be where I live. Its a known shithole of the UK, so people might be a bit more aggressive here than other places lol.

My brother thinks cigarettes are safer. I've tried to explain to him that there are only four ingredients in eliquid and over 7,000 chemicals in cigarettes, but he still thinks cigarettes are safer. Despite 14% of smokers getting cancer and 51% of smokeless users getting cancer, he smokes and chews. Of course, I've also found that people who are ignorant about vaping can also be ignorant about other things, and are comfortable in their ignorance and general and will choose to remain ignorant even when presented with an opportunity to change. For example, my brother and I also disagree about the confederate flag. I have researched the whole history behind the flag and I know that it stands for other things besides slavery. I have encouraged my brother to do the same, but he would rather go by what he learned in school, which is less than half the truth at best.

I was pleasantly surprised when I was in Vegas last month. I was pulling pretty hard on a billow v2 on top of my ipv 3li and this gruff looking old dude came up to me looking all pissy but then just wanted to know everything I knew about vaping. Mind you this guy was probably 75 years old but no shit wrote down almost word for word what I told him about beginner devices, more advanced devices, ejuice, and rebuilding coils. He had me write down some websites for him and I hope he follows thru. Come to find out he was pissy because of how much shit he was getting about his cigar smelling bad and was intrigued by the smell of the custard plumes I was layin out. So that was cool, I thought for sure he was on his way over to give me hell about it :)

I cant really recall any negative attention ive received, and if I did I wouldnt have a whole lot of fucks to give, Im desperately awaiting a stinky weezy smoker to come up to me and tell me how bad vaporizers are...that will b a good conversation im sure!

Yes ^ lots of this.

Also the occasional shit-eating grin, usually from older guys who look "well-traveled."

Other than that... ...I get "WOAH! Where's the fire?!" "That smells really good!" or "Why/how does that thing make so much smoke?" pretty much daily. That may just be because I've been walking around with a series mod in my pocket lately, though...

I do get the occasional smoker who insists that vaping is worse. I like to take bets on who dies first. We'll put the winnings in our wills. And when they die, I'll just consider it a tax on their stupidity. ;;

Nah, but the only smoker I've met who never budged eventually simply doesn't care if he lives or dies. He's just stuck in his ways. I don't think it's my place to tell the man how to go out. If he wants to die drinkin and smokin, then so be it.

I don't think I've ever been told off for vaping anywhere. Florida seems to be a pretty hip state for vapers. There's a vape shop every 3-5 miles around here. It's not unusual to see sub-ohmers out in the wild. Most people who approach me about it seem like they already know someone who vapes. Most people are at least aware of it to the point where it doesn't surprise or offend them. Based on the stories I've heard and read, I'm thinking I'm just lucky, though.

I think a perfect basis for comparison would be how big of a drag they can take off a stinky without coughing vs how big of a hit you can take off your mod or w/e device you are using without coughing. Now tell me which is safer?

To my surprise most of the reactions I get from people when they see me vape are negative. People that don't know anything about vaping assume I am "Smoking Pot", and most Cigarette Smokers want to lecture me on how Vaping is worse than smoking cigarettes. At first I tried to explain the benefits of Vaping to the smokers, but now I don't even bother unless they are interested in quitting and ask for advice.

Here's how that conversation would go with me.
Smoker: you know vaping is worse than smoking?
Me: ok, first a little challenge. You take as big of a drag as you can without coughing and I'll do the same.
After I obviously win that challenge, the rest of the conversation.
Me: cigarettes have over 7,000 chemicals in them, eliquid has four. Secondly, smoking cigarettes can cause all kinds of diseases. Yet you stand there smoking and attempting to lecture me about what is healthy.
Smoker: walks away.

The thing is, I work in surgery as a tech, and I have told everyone that I quit smoking, then added, now I vape. I have been met with alot of skepticism, but as time goes by, acceptance. I am now truly feeling better, and it shows in my work. My boss is supportive to a point.

I used to vape often in public, back in 2012 when Ego pen style vapes were very common. Pretty much every bar I went to was totally ok with it, non smokers around me were totally fine with it and would usually ask me how they work or if it helped quit smoking.

Now, every single one of those establishments have no vaping signs posted, many having more up than the no smoking signs.

I think its very unfortunate, but its just a sign of the times, people apparently pushed it too far and maybe it was too much for public perception to take in at once.

KKen, I noticed the same thing! Around that time was when I had my issues with alcohol, as this is not the first time round in my life I have vaped, I did start on Ego style batteries and CE4's from a corner shop. When I used them-no one batted an eyelid. I think it is to do with the shape of the device if I am honest, and it is less suspicious-I DO see vapers round my area, my previous comment was wrong actually-but using Ego's.

There was a big thread on facebook about where I live, and someone bought up vaping. People started asking me for advice, which was great, apart from one woman who kept telling them to save their money and go get the ego from the corner shop.

I inboxed everyone that was actually interested with a setup that was solid, for under ÂŁ50-and explained if they really want to stop, thats less than a weeks smoking at around ÂŁ6.50-ÂŁ8 a pack!

A few listened-and they love their Sigelei mini's and nautilus tanks, and actually have told me they don't smoke now.

I had completely forgot about this one positive thing. But, a couple of people did listen to the woman on facebook, and concluded vaping 'didn't work' which I almost knew would 100% happen. Oh well. Some people can't see the logic behind actually paying the money for a fairly good device, while they are happy to literally burn nearly ÂŁ10 a day and get pissed out their faces on the weekend, most spending literally about ÂŁ100 a night where I live (That is their 8 or so pints, typical Canvey c*caine, and a kebab on the way home, unless they go on a bender and spend ÂŁ600 on c*ke-I acually knew more people in the pub on c*ke than not. It was seen as normal as a cup of coffee or a beer where I live, people always popping off to the toilet for a "cheeky one" and coming out rubbing their noses, its so bad the pubs all have had to glue sand to the tops of the toilets to stop people doing c*ke off of them-but people do it off the hand dryer, or even blatantly by the sink. Most managers and staff know, and if you haven't got a note they will even cut you a straw down to size and join you with their own gear. Thing is, I was addicted to a different drug, which isn't fashionable so could not tell anyone, or I know people would of disowned me-but I quit that and stopped going around with those sorts of people)

I deal with this all the time. My wife...who used to smoke at one time....says I'm going to give us all cancer vaping indoors. Her 60 year old father knows they are harmless, calls it fog, and tells me to go ahead and do it in his house. No amount of fact or science seems to convince my wife. Also I have had people tell me you don't know what's in that and to them I reply I know exactly what's in it and it's been deemed safe by the FDA.

I get this a lot from my SO. She doesn't mind my vaping, even encourages it. But still says anything inhaled into your lungs other than air, is bad for you.

But she's seen first hand the benefits. So she never nags etc etc. She's been my biggest supporter.

Meanwhile, smokers are about 50/50 when I talk to them. Many want to know as much as I can tell them.

And like a previous poster stated, many of them move away from me. I guess that crowd thinks it will explode lol

I've tried to cut down on public vaping sadly. It's honestly not helping the cause. We have a mall we can vape in, but I got some seriously bitter looks. If I wasn't a big black guy, people would probably say something to me. Sad reality. It's gonna be a while before vaping ever becomes mainstream "accepted"

I didn't start vaping in public until about four years ago for fear of public reaction or negative comment. The indifference was surprising and I've never had a negative comment. Kite festivals, music celebrations, the casino all seem not to notice. One older lady did frown at me at Oaks Park (a kind of permanent carnival), the only exception.

I live in Oregon. This is what those notoriously polite Canadians must be like.

I rarely get a negative respone from anyone while I am vaping but I try to be respectful of others unless I am in a smoking section then I let the clouds fly. I have had a few reply, that smells really good or where do you buy those things. I take that opportunity to give them a nice little pro vaping spill.

Seriously? Someone called you a drug addict? I gather if that was a man your reaction would of been a bit different-I know I would of if someone called me a junkie/drug addict.

So people are calling vapers drug addicts. OK-some of us here ARE technically addicted to drugs, nicotine to be precise, plus I am sure there are many member who had similar issues to me, which I have no qualms with.

The strange thing is-when I was at my lowest, an alcoholic junkie, no one actually once called me a drug addict. I'm not a big bloke, but I have been told a lot of times I have 'one of those faces' whatever that means, but I guess its not good. Women have never seemed to have a problem with it though, so I quite like having 'one of those faces' whatever that is lol.

That would have almost set me off
That WOULD of set me off to be honest. I think I would of told its child its mother is wrong, I am using a device that stops me smoking and has no bad chemicals in it, and probably told her to shove it.

Now, I am usually a polite person, but I did have a bad past so am known in my area. But not once has someone actually said "Thats conan, some drug addict"-and I HAVE genuinely turned my life around. I do something I never thought I would ever do now-I actually am doing a bible study with a rather nice family. Finding historical facts to be true after doing my own research, and the prophesies have quite amazed me.

I have a slightly strange view, I believe we are hybrids, thats why there is no missing link. I think an alien race of some type created us-but to early humans, they would of come from the heavens, and may of seemed like angels/demons wouldn't they? It could even just be a natural force we have yet to discover, I believe in the big bang-but something triggered that, and I don't think anyone will actually know what though unless there is afterlife.

That was a bit random lol.

MrScaryZ, I like you, but I have to ask-what flavours are you using that provide the smell of ass lol? I subohm and my mum loves the smells that come, and she also loves the clouds-it reminds her of the fog when we used to live in London.

That is, unless my mum secretly loves the smell of ass.

Look up the nephilim. They could have been the aliens you speak of. I believe this could be possible. It's actually not that uncommon of a belief. As far as the whole " drug addict" thing, there have been news reports of people using vaporizers to do some very nasty drugs, designed to be used in vaporizers but made with what I do not know nor do I want to, people overdosing, going to the hospital and being released and overdosing again. That may be where she got the idea. Hard to say for sure.

the biggest question I get asked is if there's weed in there. I work with my dad, he thinks it's awesome I quit and loves the smell of some of the vape juice I'm using. my stepmom on the other hand, believes every shitty thing she reads on the internet about vaping and claims the vapor makes her throat and lungs hurt when she smells it.....and yet she runs one of those fucking scentsy vapor air freshener things 24/7 in her house that spews out who knows what kind of chemicals. people are so fucking retarded

I've learned that there are two kinds of people. Those who prefer knowledge, and those who prefer ignorance. Just as those hungry for knowledge will seek it, those who desire fuel for their ignorance will also find it.

I would ask her if the vapour from bathing or showering also hurts her lungs in this way, and if it does she should seriously consider seeing a Doctor. That Dihydrogen monoxide is dangerous stuff you know. ;) http://www.dhmo.org/facts.html

The thing that makes me laugh is every fact about Dihydrogen monoxide is true-and a few places got so many petitions they was going to ban it. It wasn't untill they was informed it was WATER that they stepped back. It was pretty cool though in how it made the government and the 86 percent of people who supported a ban on it look thick as 2 planks. If you don't know the DHMO story, read the link above and its dangers, it was a very good prank from a good few years back.

So-it shows how the media could make anything, even water, seem like the most dangerous thing out there-so I can see where uneducated people get fooled. I no longer watch MSM news or read newspapers as it is all propaganda to support their own agenda.

I'm sorry I worded my first post badly. I don't vape in stores I only vape in my car, outside, or in my home. But I have seen signs popping up for no vaping in the stores in my town.

I will admit to stealthily using my device in my local iceland (UK frozen food store) when it is empty. I usually do this at low wattage, and nobody knows. There is some shops that are fine with it-you can chat to security while vaping away.

But, 99% of the time it is either outdoors or at home in the house. I'm lucky that my mum is quite intelligent and open minded-I explained to her what the ingredients were, showed her how it all worked-and she is actually happy I spend my money on something I enjoy, as my money early last year was quite literally killing me.

She is glad enough I am off the drink and drugs, let alone smoking too-so actually gets excited too when I order a new device or tank-and always wants to watch me unbox it and see it working. She loves the smells and the fog too, my grandad however is the opposite, we suspect he may have the early signs of dementia, plus has had a stroke. Somehow-even now I have put a draught excluder under my door, have my windows wide open and even turn a fan on facing out of the window if it gets really foggy-it fogs up the whole downstairs (Chalet bungalow, all rooms downstairs with a gamesroom/bedroom upstairs, one big room.) It was creepy as though till a few years ago, and all of my adult family would not go up there alone. My adult cousin once stayed the night and after he said "I am never, ever staying up there again at night". I don't know what happened, but it now feels like an entirely different room to the whole family.

I still installed a lock on the loft door though (Its like a mini half size door, right next to the fold out double bed-my room has a single bed.) I drilled a bolt lock in place as my fiancee and I stay up there and it creeped her out, as sometimes it would open itself, I suspect due to druaghts-but in the middle of the night hearing the loft open right next to your bed was bloody scary-so I put a lock on, not just for her but for me as well lol.

I make this Ejuice man called "Dirt" Im serious its a misake I made that I started adding to remember when you were a kid and got a mouth full of dirt thats what it tastes like

II meet much the same type of idiots when I'm out on the motorcycle..
Insisting on telling me about howdangerous motorcycles are and people get killed/maimed/dismembered /brain damage on them etc etc...

I tell them about my uncle that got killed in a car accident and they'll never see me in one of those fucking death traps...
They tend to be at a loss for words after that...

I know a lot more people that have been killed in vehicles than on bikes. 40+ years riding motorcycles of every variety and my family knows if I gotta go out on one I was doing what I loved. it doesn't stop them from voicing their concerns for my safety tho, it's not going to be my doing that takes me out on one
