Hello to all. I'm seeking immediate HELP!! I'm fairly new to DIY and have done some research and forum reading on the benefits of self creation of your own e-liquid/e-juice. Purchased a 120ml bottle of 70VG/30PG 24mg of nicotine base, and all of what is needed for making my own juice. Upon all of this I've tasted & tested all of my supplies ending in good results of flavoring percentages I like. I decided to make three 15ml bottles of e-juice using an online e-liquid calculator. My mixes have been sitting in my closet steeping (for 2 weeks exact yesterday). Between yesterday and current I have tried all 3 of my mixes only to be greeted with a very bad & strong harsh taste. Juice smells amazing but only getting a very very faint taste of flavoring through the harshness. I know its not the NIC/PG/ or VG because of earlier & todays taste test results. Are my calculations way off? And if so.... How would one go about proper ingredients with an already premixed 30PG70VG nicotine base. Please help. Here's an example of what was required for one 15ml bottle mix:

Ingredient:
Nicotine 24 mg (30/70 PG/VG) - 3.75ml
PG - 2.93ml
VG - 6.38ml
Flavor 1 - 1.5ml
Flavor 2 - .45ml

ENDING RESULTS:
Strength: 6 mg
PG/VG-ratio: 40/60
Flavor total: 1.95 ml (13%)

24mg of nic is pretty strong and so is PG.

By adding either more VG or PG to the pre mix.

If you poured 10ml of your pre mix into a bottle you would have to split half of it with vg to make the nic 12mg...but now you have a higher vg content..so your vg to pg ratio will change as well...you really cant only change the nic content and leave the rest alone.

Pour 5ml of your premix in a 10ml bottle...maybe take 3ml of VG and 2ml of pg and just add that to the 5ml...that will even it out more.

Thank you for the help :). I will definitely try this way later (as my taste buds are recovering), and let you know the results.

Did you use a juice calculator? - it makes a huge difference. On a quick glance it looks as if your final mix may come out to your desired 6mg, but use a calculator to check. Ejuicemeup is a popular one, but there are several others. Be sure to set your nic base pg/vg mix into the calculator first.

yes, e-liquid-recipes calculator is the one I used. But I didn't put the nic base in first.

It doesn't matter what order it goes in - what I meant was to be sure you mark that your nic base is 70vg/30pg!

It sounds like you've already tasted your nic base, pg/vg without flavors and ruled out those as the cause of the harshness. In that case it's somethign to do with your flavoring - what flavors are you using?

Yes indeed, made sure i put in base values. TFA strawberry 10% and TFA banana 3%

I was under the impression the nic was already mixed in at 24mg content.

If its 24mg "base" then it should be easy to figure out with calculator.

So after doing more test........ You hit it on the button!!!!!!! my flavor percentages were WAY to high. IDK how because I tested with & without /VG&PG (no nicotine). I think the nic BASE % wasn't correct.

I have been making liquids for a couple of months now with excellent results. My go to calculator is also great for other vaping calculations and was highly recommended by a number of folks to me: http://www.steam-engine.org/juice.asp Always, remember to enter the batch size, base percentages of the nicotine and the PG/VG ratios, as well as the desired finished percentages before you start adding flavors. If you stick to recipes that are between 12-18% flavor components of the batch you should do well, provided your flavors don't clash too much. Good luck and happy baking.

Thanks for the tips. I think next go round ill order a 100% VG nicotine base. The 70vg 30pg NIC base I have is a bit more challenging for this noob, lol. Cheers!!

Unless you only vape max VG you might consider getting your nic in a PG base - it's much easier to work with because it's thinner!

agree with the comment above, not only is the PG easier to work with (for measuring), if you use straight VG you better be prepared to let it steep at least a couple weeks...it won't blend in completely till then. I use 100 PG nicotine base exclusively for all blend ratios including 70/30vga. Also 100% PG flavorings...if your mixing flavors at a greater than 25% ratio, good luck with that.

So my thoughts were if i'm using 100% pg flavorings I should use vg nicotine base.? But I wasn't considering that vg takes forever to blend all the contents together (FFT). I will deff take what you both said and purchase the 100%PG nic base next go round. Until then ill keep using my crock pot for steeping the thickness of my vg blends.

I make my DIY around 70/30 (vg/pg), and I only use a PG base. But my total % flavorings rarely total more than 10% and usually a little less (and I vape 3mg). You'd have to do the math to see what would work for you!

I started off around 10% but after reading numerous recipes out there and noting the %'s of the flavor to volume ratios, I tried bumping some of them up to closer to 15% total volume. I seem to have found a "sweet" spot there for 70/30 blends with some requiring a little more and visa v...It is pretty much a subjective thing and I would imagine relative to the device and temperature being utilized. Some flavors just are more powerful than others and require more assertiveness. I do think that PG based nicotine is the way to go though, at especially for new mixers.

I totally agree. Since I found my "sweet spot" (by lowering my flavor %) 8-10% is perfect for my 70/30 vg/pg blends. It will only get better when I make the transition to 100% pg nic base

Yeah and I guess I also depends on the vendor you purchase your flavoring from. I currently have only TFA flavors. But soon I will switch over to FA. There is a lot of HIC receipts I would like to try. But as we all know most of the flavors HIC use is Flavor art.

I started out with a bunch of TFA also, but once I found FA I sold most of them (not all), and I mainly use FA now. I find on the whole I prefer them!

And with FA flavors, it looks like they are much more stronger concentrated flavors then TFA. If so then ill probably use much less flavor % then im using now. Oh I cant wait till next week :D

Another thing to remember about a 100% VG nic base (even at 24mg) is you have to shake it til your arm almost falls off to get anywhere NEAR to a good distribution of the Nic in the base to the VG. Get one "hot spot" in you base and you'll understand why its so important.

Yeah don't mind the extra steep time. I have a few bottles to last me until certain mixes steep long enough. Thanks though.

I do pretty much exactly what Amanda does, one thing though, since I always mix in the 30ml bottles I scored the syringe at every ml mark and put a bright colored o-ring at 1- 3-5ml marks since those are the most common stopping points for me, and because I DEPLORE measuring with my blind eyes. Lol
The numbers on those little plastic syringes don't stick around long.
Also remember no matter how badly you screw up, it can never taste as bad as mt baker and its always fixable.

You can either paint the syringe with clear fingernail polish, or wrap with clear packing tape to preserve the markings & numbers.
