I need some help. I've been trying to get my dad to quit smoking and switch to vaping. He's tried puffing on decent vaporizers and each time he claims they choke him to death and last night he hit my mod and said he almost blacked out.

I've NEVER heard of such a situation and am completely at a loss as to what may cause this.
Usually if it's a PG/VG allergy, you can still manage to get a hit albeit with some irritation, but he can't get a decent hit without choking. I swear he's hitting it wrong because I know when I hit it and barely get a hit, I kinda choke a little but not to the degree he does.

I do know he's not inhaling deeply enough and taking little baby mouth hits most of the time but I don't see why that would choke him and cause someone to pass out.

HELP

You haven't given enough information to even comment on your post, What IS your mod, What IS your juice and topper???
Some one who calls a mod a vaporizer causes me to take this as you are a beginner or.....??
What I will suggest is not to let him use it until you know more of what your doing.

Not to pick on you so please don't think that.

But Whiskey is right.

You really should be fully aware of the gear you use and how to fine tune it before you try to help others.

Please give us more details so we can help!

He used a Nautilus Mini/Eleaf with 50/50 juice. Has tried the subtank mini/kbox with Max VG juice. He has also tried various standard EGO type vape pens with clearos, not sure what kind because I wasn't there.

I'm at work so only posted the barebones so sorry.

Easy Whiskey.. Not new just pressed for time.

What is the nic content of your ejuice he tried?..what was the wattage used?

Maybe he got one of those dry hits?

Ok, so first I apologize to the moderators for being snarky. I just needed a break.

With the Nautilus, it was 18mg 50/50. Subtank it was 6mg max VG. I don't think it was a dry hit. With the others he tried, I'm not sure what they had.

Oh, wattage was 9.5 watts with the Nautilus and 25 with the subtank.

Everyone that smokes and goes to try my vape always tries to take a big hit and ends up choking. What I have found is they need to start out mouth hitting not lung hitting until their lungs clear up. When I started vaping it kinda choked me up to so I took it easy and just mouth hit then to lung and they were small vapes. I could chain vape if needed with 18-24mg and get the nic I needed to keep me off the stinkys. My neighbor is a vapor who does not sub ohm and my mods have a tendency to make her cough when she gets to big a vape because she is not used to them. I was not able to lung hit for the first month or two until my lungs had gotten all the excess yuck out of them. Then I was able to slowly start lung hitting now I vape like a champ :)

That's what I thought but he can't even seem to get an actual drag off of them without choking. He's a more than pack a day smoker of full flavors.

It's the opposite, he's not hitting it hard enough it seems. The amount of vapor he exhales is next to none. On each one I've seen him try. Idk, maybe it's just not for him. But I'd like to have my dad around a little longer and not lose him to lung cancer.

I wouldnt worry about how much vapor is coming out. My neighbor messaged me the other day trying to figure out why she gets very little vapor off the same mod her hubby can vape on and get a big cloud. If he is lung hitting it that may be to much even if its a small hit on it. I know as a smoker I used to lung him my smokes but found out real quick that was a no go when I started vaping. Also may find he produces a little more cloud if he is not lung hitting it at first.

Smoking irritates the lungs..that said it takes about a week for some people, like my uncle, for their lungs to heal..he coughed alot at first when he started vaping..but stuck with it and in about 6 days he was doing lung hits with no cough at all...just sayin

It chokes him up so bad that he won't be motivated to stick with it that long. To the point that it's worse than an asthma attack.

Thanks for the replies.

I remember reading that when your lungs are full of tar they don't process the vapor as rapidly so you cough more in the beginning because it sits on top of the tar coating. Suggest he mouth vape like a cigar and enjoy the flavor and volume of vapor to get started.

Remind him also that vaping is not like a cigarette. Vaping hard and fast gets you less vapor, more juice in your mouth, and nasty dry hits. Slow and steady gives the heat, depth, and volume of vape because the coil will keep wet and can handle the volume of air passing over it. It's somewhat counter intuitive to a cigarette smoker.

High VG makes my lungs feel heavy even after all these years. I remember at the beginning feeling lightheaded and getting anxiety attacks with shortness of breath if I vaped too high VG. My suggestions would be to try 50/50 to 70PG/30VG to see if that helps. It's thinner and may wick better as well if he is hitting too fast. As his lungs clear he'll might be able to handle VG better.

Another thing I remember reading and heard from my local health store owner is that VG can be sourced from palm oil, coconut oil, or other vegetable oils. Certain brands can cause different allergies if you are allergic to the underlying vegetable source. Unfortunately they never tell you where it comes from so all you can do is try another brand to see if you get the same reaction.

I hope he sticks with it.

Went through the same thing when my mother started out. I mixed up a few for her to try and while I could vape them just fine, she initially had that same reaction. After a few tries, finally got it worked out.

The short of it, in her case, the 70pg/30vg seemed best for her (not too thick), the nic level 6mg as any stronger and she noticed it (so not too strong) and tuning the tobac & menthol flavor percents. She wanted a tobac touch and the menthol, no mint, very strong but also had to avoid it being overpowering or that would cause it. Also obviously not having it hit like a freight train, so built for 1.5 ohm @ 4v/11w.

That's all I recall, so hope that helps a little.

He's so damn stubborn I don't think he'll try long enough. He takes one and then refuses to try again. He wants to quit smoking. Hell, he NEEDS to quit because of medical reasons. But it's causing him not to want to try. I'll try to get him to stick with it. His girlfriend has been vaping and trying to quit smoking as well so maybe she can help him out as well.

Thanks,

Thanks,

I've found that the goal of cutting down the number of cigarettes with vaping makes a better goal than quitting. It is less intimidating. The motto being every cigarette you don't smoke is a good thing. Quitting will either happen or not after that, but at least the smoker doesn't have the pressure of having to quit.

I always tell smokers you can do both at the same time and they seem much more open to the concept.

Tell him to do one drop sublingual until his lungs heal up a bit. It elevates the plasma level without any risks. (if you squirt there will be hiccups ... lol)

Then work on different mixes, power, wicking, air flow when you have a day to sit down and test things fully. Some people get a huge reflex from VG, as it's like a water in lung nerve response.

How does he do in a wet sauna ?
