so those of you who use readyXwick... are you boiling it first?

if so, how hot of a boil are you using? slight boil or rolling boil?

and how long should one boil it for?

ive been using it for months, but have never boiled it. i am going to give it a shot as i keep hearing that boiling helps the wick from fraying... any truth to that?

thanks all!

You dont need to boil it. Its already kiln treated to prevent fraying

funny you both say that. i have been using the 3 and 2mm RXW and both fray on me. then i have little ceramic fibers on my fingers and on the deck of my RDA. lloks like fiberglass.

i reached out to RBASupplies about this and they told me not to worry about the fraying. and that the micron of the fibers is large enough to not be a concern for your lungs... of which i still wonder about, but the stuff works and tastes amazing.

now if i could get it to stop fraying...?

anyone else?

@2clicker The answers you seek can be found in this video:

In short though, no, boiling won't help "fraying" and after watching the video I think you will have a better idea of what "fraying" we are referring to when we say that treated readyxwick doesn't fray. I would explain it in text, as I have explained it in voice to you, but I think that it would be better for you to just watch the video which will give you more insight to what we mean :)

What diameter do micro coils need to be to get 3mm through the coils? Thanks in advance

ummm... 3mm

EDIT* my apologies. i should have said that it was i used when i used the 3mm RXW anyway.

thank you for that! i cant watch now, but will later. by fraying i meant two things... one fraying like any string will fray. and two... shedding fibers on my fingers, deck, everywhere really.

i find both the 3mm and 2mm do both. i run kanthal through the RXW and then build a stovetop coil from that. so its basically a stovetop coil sleeved in RXW. when i bend leads i have to bend it before it exits the wick so keep it from fraying.

i will check the video and report back later. thanks again!

EDIT* update! i am not talking about the auto fraying seen in that video when cutting. my RXW does not fray like that. it stays very clean when cut. its just that the coils i make require a lot of manipulation and this is the cause for the fraying i am experiencing. it happens much easier than the video shows when the large coil is attempted to be wicked. if i bend the wick near the ned at all it starts to fray. sounds like it isnt an issue.

about the fibers that come off when cutting and using RXW... no need to worry about it because its a large enough micron that does not pose health issues...? the shedding of fibers still bothers me, but i suppose its safe enough. maybe a ceramic filter could be used just before the vapor exits the RDA? to keep any possible airborne particles from getting into your body. thinking out loud here.

I don't boil & it doesn't fray. The only time I've ever gotten the shedding, like you're describing, is when I've tried to wrap a coil (tightly) around RxW - resulting in the Kanthal cutting into the wick. Thus, the cut particles will shed off. The remedy.... I make a coil, then thread the wick through. No shedding. No fraying.

@khel72 for 3mm, you would use a 7/64th if you are on average pg/vg ratios, or perhaps a 1/8th if you are running very high and thick VG ratios.

The following video may really help you with deciding and understanding coil sizes for RxW.

I just got some ReadyXwick in 3mm and when I got it it looked small. Sure enough a 3mm coil was too big. I was able to wick 2.4mm coils with the 3mm wick though, had to kind of screw the wick into the coil fraying the end just a little bit, that said the fit looks perfect IMO and the performance is great in my Derringer. Reading this thread I understand as 7/64 in is more like 2.7 mm. If you are using a coiling jig like the kuro 2.5mm should be the right one.
