We only have a few days left before they vote... I'm asking you Please take the time and contact your elected officials ...Mozilla has made a very simple way of doing it where they find the Phone numbers for you... I myself just signed the petition and called 2 of my Congress reps from my state (NJ) leaving them voice mails...
"Hello, my name is (your name) and I am a voter from (your city, state.)
I'm calling to urge you to vote YES on the USA FREEDOM Act and put an end to mass surveillance under the Patriot Act. Ending mass surveillance will help restore trust in the Internet and improve security for us all. Now is not the time to delay, please oppose any re-authorization of the Patriot Act without real reforms."

While I commend your efforts, this is not a battle we are capable of winning. Regardless of what piece of paper is signed, not signed, repealed, or not repealed, this govt will continue to impose its will on the people. Any body of power will operate with impunity, regardless of its actions, until people stand up and take the power away. Trying to make changes within a corrupted govt system, to improve a corrupted govt policy, can only lead to a corrupted solution.
I see this as a publicity stunt to garner support for very unpopular elected officials and to reinforce the bullshit fantasy that somehow, our country cares about our privacy and is listening to us. The truth is, nothing will change.

I have no plans to blow up a building ,or kill people . If someone wants to listen to my wife bitch , fine . If they want to listen to my kids complain , good . If you do not plan on a crime ,what do you care ! If it saves one life from a crazy , great ! I for one do not live in la la land , and yes there are people out there who want to kill , your mother ,father , your kids and your wife . Anything to avoid another 9/11 . Sadly, people are learning , in other countries you have to pick a side . ....... Winston Churchill said .."people sleep soundly in their beds because , there are men willing to do violence on their behalf ". Anything to get a head start . Just my 2 cents .

Thanks for the heads up.

Sadly, all this is going to do in the end is to bury their mass surveillance so deep that we, the people don't get wind of what is going on at least until the next whistle blower walks into spotlight.

But if they want to keep me under surveillance, I feel sorry for the people watching me, listening to my phone conversations, watching my internet activites as well as the books I check out from the library.

The worst things they will find is perhaps me picking my nose while driving, seeing that most of my internet activity is work or vape related, phone conversations consisting mostly of subversive chatter about what I need to get at the grocery and that I read and watch trash.

You think 9/11 could have been avoided with surveillance within the US? Thats funny. Terrorism is just an excuse for them to grab control.

Maybe they listen to you and don't like what they're hearing ...so they just have the IRS audit you...or you get fired from your job...the idea that it can't happen here is insane...not only can it happen here..it does happen here, and has in the past ,and will happen more and more in the future. We have something like 30 million illegal aliens in the country..our borders are a revolving door.....do you seriously think if they wanted to keep the country secure from some imagined threat they would allow 30 million people to just waltz around unaccounted for.....it defies logic to believe anything they say.

I want to make a comment here but I know to much about how the different agencies in the federal government work. It is a handful of people who will dictate how they will vote on the bill.

"If you have nothing to hide, you should let us sniff your panties."

Guess who else used that same argument? And I don't want to Godwin this thread, but that is the typical fascist response to the right to privacy argument. I certainly never bought it. No doubt the big security agencies are way out of line with their surveillance, according to what Snowden has reveled.

Having said that, let's not get too paranoid. The IRS won't even audit people for amounts less than a million dollars anymore because they are so understaffed and underfunded thanks to Congressional cuts across the board. They need to generate revenue (in part to pay for agencies like the NSA and CIA) and can't do that by spending all their resources going after people who have no money in the first place. An agency like the NSA or CIA is not using them for harassment, they don't need too and it just doesn't work that way, despite what you see on tv and in the movies. All the IRS "scandals" you hear about on the news are the result of grunts and individual idiots screwing up, not Big Brother and not any conspiracy. You can hate any government agency all you want, I hate many myself, but remember their mandates are set by Congress and they are simply and often much more incompetent than they are nefarious or black-ops oriented, except for the big guns like the NSA. And if you show up on their radar, they are not going to contact your employer to get them to hassle you. If you are that important to them, you won't ever know what's coming. Most of this is just a guess, but sounds reasonable and likely to me.

I'm pretty sure the current IRS scandal is not an individual screwup, it was targeted politics at the Republican Party. Stop watching CNN, MSNBC and the 3 news networks if you want truth.

There's parts of the patriot act that we need in place due to how the laws are written to deal with terroism.

The whole point of the United States of America is to stay fucking paranoid...the whole point of the republic is that it is human nature for tyrants to arise...that a free people is the rare exception no the rule of humanity...the guys who founded thid nation made this point over and over and over again...that it was up to each generation to secure freedom, that according to history and human nature it would always be under attack especially from our own goverment.

The IRS scandal was a political targeting ot political dissedents that is on par with Stalin or any other totalitarian pig, the whitewash by a corporately controlled state media that hammers the myth that it was anything else but is bulls**t that is only bought by idiots, cowards or people that condone totalitarianisim because they like the dictator du jour.

If you are fine with the government having all your private information because you are afraid of the boogy man, feel free to give it to them. You have no right to volunteer my private information without probable cause of a crime and warrant to go with it and I'd highly appreciate it if you'd fuck off and stay out of my life since you nor the government has reason to believe I'm involved in anything illegal.

Simple enough to understand?

If any of you use facebook, you are fully connected to a government "watch"...certain "key words" used in any conversation trigger a "review" of sorts to your conversation...So you basicly have zero privacy.

Government has been spying via satellite as well for a very long time..they can zoom in on a home and can also here any conversation inside this home..they can look inside your home as well via infrared.

Government will do as they please regardless of any laws passed or not passed.

Part of this ecig ban wanted is because the government wants people to die from smoking...Same with fast food resturaunts making millions obese from eating the food getting diseases from the weight..the government is trying to regulate population and they will forever.

The Illuminati is real and its only going to get worse for the next generation to come and so on...Soon many great great grand children will have chips implanted on the body and kept track of for life...I have no doubt this chip will have a feature built in to kill someone at the press of a button.

Yes, when people volunteer to give away my privacy. I do not respect your opinion because it takes something away from me. The reverse is not true, my opinion takes nothing from you. Our opinions are not equal. Yours requires loss of privacy on my part. Give your privacy away if you choose, I don't care. Volunteer my privacy and I'll kindly say, fuck off. It's not to be taken lightly.

We're not talking about our opinions on which juice tastes the best. We're talking about me keeping(or regaining) what is mine. My privacy. It happens to coincide with my freedom.

I suppose Jack would make the arguement your opinions take away security from him....though I would disagree with that. You are a firebrand Time. being a firebrand, malcontent, disident, had been removed from the category of health debate in westeren thought to... hate speech, tin foil hat, extremist, and eventually domestic terrorist...already people in Europe are going to jail for free speech and we have people being attacked with violence for free speech.

He would have to show that one ounce of private information taken from me would lead to eliminating harm to him. I have no such information. The dick pic I sent my wife three or so years ago won't help capture any boogy men. But then, NSA can assume it's a pic of what I'd be happy to shove up their self righteous ass's. :D

I don't see myself as a firebrand. Passionate, I suppose, but just an individual intent on remaining an individual.

more laws are not going to solve the problem, they already operate outside the law. put focus on repealing laws, but no one is for that. any time we have a problem, even if the problem is caused by government, we think that more laws are the answer. we see where that has gotten us...

like @Pauly Walnuts said, you have the right intentions but this solution is a black hole of more government and more laws that no one understands with loopholes that defeat the entire purpose of the law. politicians are con men, they have this system figured out 100% and get what they want no matter what we think. just reread what you said "pass the 'freedom act' to stop the 'patriot act'", why not just stop the patriot act by stopping the patriot act? because that doesnt help government grow. its literally an endless cycle of bullshit. and you can apply this logic to anything government does. effective solutions like shrinking government through repealing laws and funding have been branded as extremist (by them) so again its a path to no where. they have got this country in a choke hold

Since 9/11 we have all given up some freedom ,like it or not . The Patriot Act was put into place to get around some of our laws , to keep track of the crazy ones . I may not like it , but it is the way it is . This stuff sadly , is not going to stop . This is a public forum ,and if you can not tolerate others opinions , maybe it's just not for you . It's freedom of speech , if you like that great , if you don't like it that's great too . Have a great day !

Based of my reading habits the NSA might conclude that I'm a member of the John Birch Society who is a Vegan and likes to hunt upland game with a bowl of Super hot chili as bait, has a ear fetish and likes to chase coyotes while painted red, white, and blue.

What people read is what people read. You can get plans for a frigging H-Bomb off the internet and the NSA is concerned with your choice in music and taco sauce.

No, we have not all given up some freedom. Some, like you, have given your freedom. Mine has been STOLEN. I did not consent. Being nice and soft spoken has never gotten anything stolen from me returned. Your opinion is shit and won't get what was stolen from me returned. You bet your ass I'm going to oppose it, freedom of speech and all. ;)

Not one "crazy one" was ever found by collecting my phone and internet data. Not one. And not one "crazy one" will be found by spying on me.

I remember when I still had faith in positive change. Victories like this meant a lot because I believed the system was here for the people. With the realization that money turns wheels and votes are won through propaganda, anything seeming positive just sounds like bullshit now.

You seem like a good dude who really cares about his country. Learn as much as you can about what works and what doesn't. Here is a good place to start https://mises.org

I Sub to his channel but sometimes he does talk a load of bollocks
Hes a philosopher who often discusses what society 'should' behave like under unimaginable circumstances (no govt). Very few people are going to agree with him, since we are brainwashed as people to believe that we require govts to survive.. Most americans will say hes completely full of shit because he goes against everything we were taught in school, in the media, and by our elected officials. So, your sentiment is normal.
His news on current events are typically very accurate, since he takes time and gives a shit about the truth.
I think everyone that does what Stef does is gonna be wrong sometimes, or often, its just a hazard of his occupation. Much of it is dependent on what we choose to believe, kinda like religion.

I enjoy the fact he runs a slaughterhouse for the sacred cows of the dominant narritive.....it's amazing how people hero worship popular icons who they actually know next to nothing about other than the meme they've been fed.

Oh good lord! That's about like saying walmart's prices are cheap because they don't believe in making a profit. Um, no, it's because their stuff is cheap crap, bought from businesses they've beaten down the price on, and they pay slave wages. Did you ask if Chappequiddick was a mercy killing with Mary Jo begging to be put out of her misery?
