Oh yeah, we have had our share of those here, and most members seem to be able to tell the difference between someone in real need and the moochers.
Thanks for sharing the link, those stories sound way too familiar as of lately.

Yeah, I feel like there's been a lot of that lately. It happens in any hobby/industry. Hell, I remember several cases when I was big in reptile keeping/breeding where people came up with these elaborate stories about how their collection was stolen or some other tragedy occurred and they lost all their "beloved pets." Then, when caring, giving people in the community tried to help them out by sending them cages, animals, etc... they'd mysteriously disappear and a few days/weeks later everything they were given was up for sale.

Scammers exist everywhere, I know there are people in the community that are willing to help people in legitimate need but a little bit of vetting goes a long way and the folks here at VU seem to do a great job with that.

I have a policy for these situations. It was born out of experience and I still don't like doing it, but assholes ruined it
for those who really deserve it. Since I can never be certain someone is in need, no one gets assistance unless I
know them personally.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

If you are homeless and got mugged for your istick, subtank, and 120ml's of juice what would you be using to vape that last 10ml's thats almost gone?
Like homeless people have TWO mods and when the guy got mugged where was the other mod?
Stashed in the bushes?

In helping a car load of nuns with a flat tire out front of my home this morning, someone came in an took all my A series Zildjian cymbals. I'm sure it was one of them nuns but can't prove it but that's in God's hands now.

But anyway if anyone has the heart to help a drummer get another 600+ dollar cymbal set let me know. Thanks and God Bless!

I take for granted that every single one of those "woe is me" posts are people looking to rip someone off.

I've been down on my luck before...I think many of us have at some point in our lives. I know what it's like to be dead broke, and actually spent a few days sleeping in a friend's car because I didn't even have a car of my own. The last thing on my mind was hopping on the internet and begging for someone to send me stuff.

But, just in case there's any bleeding hearts left out there with money to burn: I have some beachfront property in Iowa for sale CHEAP. Send me a PM for info.

My son use to give money to a homeless guy every time we were at the hospital, was so cute he would get his money out his pocket and look for the guy at the expressway ramp. One day he was all set and all of a sudden he had this confused upset look on his face and put his money back in his pocket. When I asked what was wrong he said MOM!!! THOSE are the NEW JORDANS on his feet if he can afford those he does not need my money!! He was 8 at the time.
I will help people who need help but usually those are the people who are least likely to ask for it

I used to do contract work at Northrop Grumman in Hawthorne CA. There was a shell gas station I used to fill up at and there was this likeable homeless guy always there begging for money. I would tell him I'm not giving him any money if all he was going to do is buy booze. He'd say "no man, I'm just hungry", so I'd buy him a Subway sandwich.

The Shell station must have been his lunch stop !

***edit***
Also, on my way to Hawthorne, I would always stop and buy Avocados for 20cents a piece from this Mexican man selling them on the off ramp...

A few months later I read a story in the LA Times about Avocado farmers pissed off about people stealing Avocados from their farms and selling them on the sides of the roads.... oops

I grew up in a small town, so my first intro to homeless people was around age 14 when we took our 8th grade trip to Washington DC. This would be 1989-ish...before they cleaned up the streets.

Holy crap.

EVERYWHERE we went, the streets were lined with street beggars, and it didn't matter that we were just kids, we got panhandled just the same. Actually, we were probably bigger suckers than the adults because most of us dropped change in as many cups as we could. We had stopped somewhere along the sidewalk, and actually saw one guy fold up his little area, walk around the corner, and drive away in a very nice car.

Turns out, some of them make a damn good living on the streets. In good spots, it's easy to earn several hundred dollars per day.

I hear that I am from Chicago, I was a waitress busting my ass and there was a girl standing in front of the resturant begging for money, she came in to trade to bigger bills, she made more money in 3 hours then I did all day!!

My question is if they are so hard up, how did they smoke enough to be so addicted they would beg for stuff? And also if youre homeless, where do you charge the batteries at?

I lived around DC in the 70s and 80s and know the homeless being on the streets were making about 40,000 a year. Lol

To be fair, She simply asked "does anyone have a spare they are not using". She didn't post a sob story about being homeless and someone stole her shit. Just wanted to try a mech, and Whiskey sent her one. No harm, no foul... non-story

But she may have taken that mod from someone who couldnt afford one. When I wanted to try a mech, I went out and bought a $15 clone. Never crossed my mind to ask for one on a forum. Its obvious she could afford it, I mean she has better gear than me.

Whiskey gave it to her. I assume we still live in a free country where we can give our stuff to whomever we want. Later in the thread she explained she was up to her eyeballs in bills. Obviously got all that sorted out. Anyway, Whiskey's kindness got her into mechs which she was very appreciative, and she has stuck around to contribute. btw, an aluminum paragon mech is a very inexpensive authentic mod.
