"Vandy Vape Swell: A Nice Mod That's NOT A Temp. Control Fail"

Following a recommendation in What Do We Like For Dual-18650 Mods These Days?, and subsequently checking the reviews, I ordered, and received, a Vandy Vape Swell from ElementVape. (Shout-out to EV: Decent selection and pricing. Quick ship.)

This is a very nice mod. It is very light and compact. Would probably do nicely as a travelling mod. It does sit nicely in the hand. The build quality seems very good. The display is awesome, and very visible in bright light. Buttons are satisfyingly clicky. Battery life seems very good. UI is pretty user-friendly. It works great in VW mode.

I've only one nit, which is in Temp. Control mode.

They use an uncommon numbering scheme for TCR. Common recommendation for SS316L is 88-92, but TCR on this mod runs from 800-1600. And getting TCR to the number you want is a PITA, because one-click-at-a-time would take forever to get from, say, 1000 to 1100, but scroll scrolls so fast it's like playing roulette trying to come even near where you want to be. Never mind guessing what's correct for the wire you're using.

With a lot of web searching and experimenting I finally found their original default of 1300 for SS316 wasn't far off. I got much better results at more around 1350 to 1375.

At first it seemed it was simply unable to hit very hard in TC mode. I'd found one review that claimed they limit wattage to 40W in TC mode. And that sure did seem to be the case. E.g.: With a 0.3 ohm SS316L build on my Geekvape Zeus Dual: My Smok Mag P3, set to 235-245°C, produces a very good, slightly warm vape. At 250°C, long pulls will dry-hit at the end. On the Swell I can't get more than a very slightly warm vape on the same RTA, even running it up to its max temp: 315°C.

Then I re-Read The Fine Manual. All I had to do was click the Fire button four times and up the wattage available in TC mode and voilá!

Bottom line: Other than the units in which TCR is set, I give this mod a resounding thumbs up!

(N.B.: This post has been extensively changed from the original, based on subsequent experience and RTFM'ing.)

Thank you for the review. I was looking at these as a work mod for the wife. Thankfully she doesnt like TC.

Would you say it's a good mod for regular power users?

Keeping in mind I've had it for a mere two days: Definitely. (I've edited my review to reflect this. Also added a note about battery life.) I really like the mod. So much so I'm bummed that the TC is a fail.

I can understand that.. almost feels like they fof everything great and just dropped the ball because lazy. That said, I almost appreciate a good ole fashioned power only device. You know, kind of one of those if you're going to do one thing, do it well mentalities. But dont cheat out and add bells and whistles to take advantage of your customer base.

I sent an email off to customer support here in the U.S., asking if they planned to address the mod's TC weaknesses. We'll see.

Update: I extensively re-wrote my original post, from when I thought TC on this mod was a bust. It now accurately reflects the capabilities of this mod.

Going forward, I believe I'll wait to gain a bit more experience with a mod before writing a capsule review :p

I agree @vuJim been loving the hell out of my swell mod. Really fits comfy in the hand, fairly clean design, everything fits nice (no floppy panels, sloppy buttons). Tc is decent on it, you're right about the tcr. And they use that similar jacked up tcr value scheme as the gene chips do or at least the fit version on the drag 2. I do find the tc to be a bit weak with ss316L even when tcr's adjusted around where you've got it.

By that I mean I usually vape low 300's F, 320, 330F somewhere around there. That's where I enjoy it on the omni chip from the older revenger and that coincides pretty much with the yihi chip on the eclipse. With the swell I find it's just not real warm at 330F, have get up around 390-410F which would burn my mouth on the others. Still feels fairly smooth though, I don't notice a real bad flutter or roller coaster ride up and down in temp throughout the vape. They did a much better job with tc than the gene chip.

All around pretty kick ass mod.
