INTRODUCTION

Hello everyone and thanks for stopping by to read another one of my reviews. Today I will be going over the Dead Rabbit V2 by Hellvape and the Vaping Heathen. Ah yes, another day, another Dead Rabbit. As many of you all know, the Dead Rabbit was released in the fall of 2017 and quickly became one of the most widely used RDAs of all time. Since then, we have seen a single coil version, an RTA, and a combination of a Dead Rabbit and Drop in the Drop Dead RDA. To be honest, I liked the Dead Rabbit, so much so that I have kept one around and used from time to time. It was made popular for the fact that it was easy to build, had decent flavor, and with air flow placed high on the sides, it was rather leak proof. The V2 of this atomizer tweaks a few things, while keeping it very much the same. Let’s get to it eh?

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Ok, so it’s a Dead Rabbit. The packaging is updated a bit, but still a typical Hellvape box. Atomizer on one side, box of spares and tools on the other, and they toss a little manual and sticker in the box too. On the outside, they changed it aesthetically. The first thing my eyes caught was the Celtic pattern pattern at the top and bottom, where the original had a soft knurl at the top only and nothing at the base. They ditched the “dead rabbit” lettering and now it has the logo only. They also tossed their antimicrobial drip tip on top which first came out on the Passage RDA. Overall, it is a nice looking atomizer with simplicity, and good machining for a Chinese made product. Other changes from the V1 include two different air flow modes, one with an open slot, and the other with several holes. These are done by rotating the top of the top cap. The last big change is a slight angle to the rabbit ear build deck. I will get into that more in the next section.

BUILD DECK

As I just mentioned, the build deck is very similar to the original, but they added an angle to how they sit. The purpose of this is great accessibility to snip coil leads after they are inserted. It does help, but I still sniped my leads before dropping them in. Just like the original though, this is very easy to toss a coil in. I like to keep 1-2mm of space between the coil and the deck, as this positions the build in the middle of where air flow comes in. This is one of the more simple decks to work with for a beginner, so I give them props for that

Wicking is nothing too crazy either. Sure, the wicks must be longer since the deck raises the coil way off the base, but it is what it is. I like to strum through my cotton to ensure all fibers are in a linear form. From that point, I snip them so they remain ½-1mm off the base, just tucked under the outer lip of the deck. I never have issues with dripping or squonking this way and it keeps up with mechanical vaping or running at 80-90w.

AIR FLOW

Airflow was changed up from previous versions. This basically takes the Dead Rabbit V1, and blends it with the Drop Dead. One can rotate the AFC for an open airflow concept, then keep on spinning to reveal 12 holes per side. Both of these angle downward toward the coil, but not as aggressive as the V1. If you like high wattage and lots of airflow, you can go wide open. If you like more warmth and more restriction, the multi-hole option is for you. It is almost like having two drippers in one, and I dig that. Also, just like the Drop Dead, the top cap is locking, but slotted. This allows you to easily install and remove the RDA from a device, but also can be turned slightly to align airflow up with the center of the coil.

HOW IT VAPES / FINAL THOUGHTS

So how does the Dead Rabbit V2 stack up against previous versions? I found that this is indeed the best option of all previous versions. The best way to describe the V2 is essentially like the Dead Rabbit and the Drop Dead had a child. Up until this point, I felt like they pretty much did as much as they could with the Drop Dead. It offered up an easy build deck, smoother, more restricted airflow, and the semi-locking top cap. The V2 brings all of this to the table, but offers the option to open up airflow to the max with the slot design of the V1, as well as having the multi-hole inlet for a more restricted, smoother draw. The deck is still one of the easiest to build on, the top cap looks a little nicer, and it is still very leak-friendly with high set air flow. I can’t fault them for coming out with this design, as it takes all previous versions and presents it’s best form to the public. There isn’t a lot to really hate on this atomizer. Sure, the coils are placed higher up, so squonking relies heavily on capillary action to keep up, but I never had an issue. Sure, Heathen's name is tied to this and his reputation has dwindled greatly in recent years. And lastly, this isn’t going to totally blow you out with flavor, but it isn’t a slouch either. Now, if you have an older Dead Rabbit or Drop Dead, is it worth the upgrade? I am leaving that up to you. It vapes like a V1 in open air mode, and a Drop Dead with multi-hole, so you basically get both of those atomizers in 1. If you have neither of those, it may be worth a try.

OVEN TEST – If this were to accidentally fall into the pizza oven, would I go out and get another? I would. It is my favorite RDA of the Dead Rabbit series and works well enough to keep it in my collection.

PROS

  • Easy to build

  • Relatively easy to wick

  • Looks nice

  • Great drip tip options

  • Semi-locking top cap that still allows for centered airflow

  • Good flavor

  • Two totally different airflow options

  • Lots of spare parts

_____________________________________________________________________________________

CONS

  • Wicking relies heavily on capillary action, which is most noticeable when squonking

  • Heathen only comes out of the woodwork to toot his own horn with new products

  • Not a con I found, but there has been plenty of circulation around some finishes, especially white that are chipping off due to poor finish practices.

REVIEW CRITERIA: I use each item for about two weeks to ensure I have collected enough data to adequately write a review. I use the same e liquid in tanks or rdas throughout all my reviews to ensure that I am comparing apples to apples between all modern equipment. I do not post reviews until I feel confident that I have used it enough to give an educated review. The reason I started doing reviews was due to poor purchasing decisions in my vaping infancy about two years ago. Back then, I purchased several different pieces of hardware without really enjoying it and I hope my reviews can guide people into spending their hard-earned money more wisely than I did! ****Keep in mind that some items I receive may be pre-release and not in retail packaging. Quality may be less than the finished product and what is in the package may differ from the retail package as well.
