E-cigarettes and emotion questionnaire

Hello, my name is Mark Lucherini. I’m a lecturer in Human Geography at Keele University, UK.

I’m doing some research into what people think and feel about electronic cigarettes. I want to understand what e-cigarettes mean to people who use them and how they have changed peoples’ lives.

I’m hoping this project would be of interest to users of Vaping Underground. I have created a questionnaire, which I was hoping some of you would be willing to complete.

You can have a look at the questionnaire following the link below before you make any decisions. My contact details are on the first page of the questionnaire, if you have any questions. You can also PM me here.

Many thanks to @lordmage and the other forum admins for giving me permission to post this.

All the best,

Mark

I've yet to see a well done survey on vaping. They've all been written by someone who doesn't vape and hasn't bothered to take the time to connect with serious vapers and get some basic information. I distrust any researcher who does shoddy research.

This guy is legit.

He came to us first, asked us if he could post his questionnaire.
He supplied us with a copy of the questions in advance and was totally transparent about who he is and what he is trying to accomplish.

In the end it was Tyger who gave him the OK to post this.

This is the most vetted surveys that you will ever find here on VU.
Also Remember, The UK is much more better when it comes to vaping than the US.
They choose not to use anti vaping propaganda on adults.

If you want to fill it out, go for it.
But if you don't wanna fill it out, don't fill it out.
Both are fine options ;)

Welcome to the forum @MarkL7.

Just a suggestion... there should be a question (for ex-smokers specifically) to glean information
regarding whether you had been prescribed medication(s) by the doctor (before vaping) that failed.

I say this because I tried everything...
Chantix
Wellbutrin
Nic patches
Throwing cats at cars

None of it worked til I started vaping.

Good point same with me.
Most of those were worse than smoking.

yes and if you look him up you can see he has been affiliated with various research and university's hell i did the survey when he asked after just that... in my book doing it the official way like he did which showed great patience in my book and rather than any other method shows he is at least a man of ethics. i am sure if any one has questions they are welcome to PM him or ask him here which i did warn him it would happen...

Thanks hellcatrydr - good point, should've had a question on this. Part of what I'm trying to explore is the significance of people using e-cigs after having tried so many other things which have not worked out. Thankfully this has been picked quite a few people who completed the questionnaire so should come across in the results.

Many thanks to everyone else who has completed the questionnaire so far! I'm hoping to start analysing the results asap and so will keep in touch here and other forums with the results.

Completed.

This was one of the better surveys I have completed @MarkL7. Please share your findings with us. Share your findings with the FDA as well, they need to see some real research from real people.

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all well and safe!

Many thanks to everyone who replied to my questionnaire which was active on the discussion forum in February 2020.

I apologise for not getting back in touch sooner – things have been a bit hectic at work and in other areas of life during the lockdowns and my research has often suffered. Unfortunately I am not quite where I want to be with analysing the data from this questionnaire. That said, I have recently done some analysis of the written responses and I am preparing a first paper submission. I have outlined some of the key themes that I identified below.

If anyone would like any further details, or wants to discuss further, please do get in touch ([email protected]). Hopefully I’ll have more detailed analysis soon!

Responses overview
The questionnaire received a total of 182 responses from a number of different discussion forums. Respondents’ average age was 49 years old. 78% of respondents were male. Most respondents came from the UK (120), with the second most coming from the USA (31). Smaller numbers of respondents lived in other countries spanning most continents. Most respondents were ex-smokers (75%) with most noted that they had quit smoking with the help of e-cigarettes (74%).

E-cigarettes and emotion
One question asked participants directly about the emotions felt when considering e-cigarettes. The respondents overwhelmingly mentioned a sense of satisfaction, under which I included mentions of relief, pleasure, contentment, happiness. Fewer respondents touched on anger, frustration and worry in response to the possibility of restrictions and regulations being placed on e-cigarettes. Many respondents also indicated that e-cigarettes had deeper impacts on their lives than just helping them stop smoking. Although other products and methods can also help people stop smoking, the strength of positive feeling towards e-cigarettes was significant given that many respondents noted that they had quit smoking using e-cigarettes after trying many or most other options with limited success.

Among some tobacco researchers e-cigarettes are often treated as the latest in a long line of products claiming to help people quit smoking. Research focusses on the efficacy of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation and so e-cigarettes can be treated with a lot of caution, over fears of re-normalising smoking, or acting as a gateway into smoking. However, these findings suggest many vapers have a much different perspective of e-cigarettes and vaping. So many of the responses to the question touched on how e-cigarettes had opened up and extended their lives in various ways. From more time spent with family, more time spent on leisure activities, better health, saving money etc. In general e-cigarettes seemed to create much more positive and optimistic everyday lives for people than were possible when smoking. I am arguing that it is this significance of e-cigarettes in people’s lives that can often be underappreciated by other stakeholders, like researchers or policy-makers.

I know a good psychiatrist who can prescribe some medicine to help those researchers regain their emotional balance, to help them cope with their unrealistic, obsessive fears of re-normalising smoking, or acting as a gateway into smoking.

I guess I'm quite late to check the survey but can see the answers. So yeah I started vaping when all other methods failed. I wanted to quit but somehow (don’t even remember now) chose to vape. It keeps my mood fresh and happy. I’m not complaining anymore.

Vaping is a journey through a world of flavors and sensations, where every inhale is an opportunity to explore new realms of taste.
Bullshit. It keeps me off those cowboy killers - period. I'm almost 70; I would be dead by now if I hadn't found vaping. In desperation I might add. I mix my own and I don't use any flavors. I just don't like them. I do occasionally use a concoction I made up about 5 years ago that is coffee, chocolate and a touch of cherry. After 5 years I'm almost through the 60 mil. I made up.

Don't get me wrong. Vaping satisfies that hand/mouth thing for me. And by not using flavors, it's easy to stealth vape.

cowboy killers
Yeah. Running $70 to $85 per carton now in WV, before being taxed. Still recall a Mar Donkey rep telling me it costs them maybe $0.30 per pack to make 'em. At that rate, a carton could run $3. Go figure. Guess that Marylin Manson dude was right with lyrics, "I'm all American / Sell you suicide / Wrapped in plastic".
