Made the jump to an RTA!

Hey ya'll,

Made the jump from using the Fireluke Tank to a Kylin M RTA tank using mesh strips.

I decided to make this switch because I tried a guys Kylin M RTA in the local vape shop and the taste was SO much nicer! I also loved the draw of the vape and the temperature was perfect. I was also informed how much cheaper it is to maintain via firebolt cotton strips compared to pre-built coils I had been using before.

I got the guy in the shop to wick and build mine (I attempted the first time myself but I made a right meal out of it, I messed it up badly ha!) I feel the next time I will be much more confident as he showed me a trick or two on how to build it correctly. I am loving the tank!

My problem is, I have a small worry that I feel is a bit silly. The one thing that kept me from switching to vaping for the longest time was those scare stories of how a vape blew up in some poor bastards face and caused horrific injuries/death. I now have this small worry in the back of my mind about using a rebuildable. What if I bent the strip accidentally, or didn't wick it correctly? Other than a dry hit, would it be dangerous?

Thank guys!

If you do not get the wicking right, you will know it from the taste, but will not harm your batteries. Not familiar with the RTA, but if it is even possible to bend the mesh enough to touch a side wall. If so, that could cause a short. Are you using a regulated mod? If so, the mod would say short and not fire. If you are using a mechanical mod, that would be a big problem.

Sorry I should have mentioned, I am using the Aegis Legend 200w kit. so definitely a regulated mod :D.

The mod should show the ohms of the coil.
It should be around the ohms that the strips are but may fluctuate a little.

You have a regulated mod which means it has a circuit board with protection.

The people who blow their faces off are using mechanical mods with no circuit board (or protection) and make a grave error with the device.
1) Battery wraps are torn
2) Button gets pressed down by accident while user is unaware
3) Hybrid top cap w/ atomizer with wrong (too short) 510 pin.
4) any kind of dead short

One thing you should do is make sure your battery wraps are good.
If you see any rips or peeling on the outer coating of the cell you may want to put those cells to the side until you can get them re-wrapped.

going mesh is pretty plug and play so not a bad choice for rebuilding first time... the strips you buy are cut to size can’t really go wrong except for wicking

Wicking takes practice, don’t be scared to keep trying it’ll pay dividends in the end

few things you can cross of the list as you go though

1. dry burning - if you do it don’t hold power for long, warm glow and release. If you follow point 3 below you’ll need to connect the mesh without cotton then release one side after it’s cooled down :)

2. Secure each side in the post check your work before firing ...is there any bits sticking out that could contact anything else metal to create a short ...trim away if so

3. Sit the mesh straight and don’t let it fold over along the edges...often it’s easier to mount one side...lay wick in the middle then fold the mesh over it...hold down cotton and mesh and secure it in

4. Watch vids for the wicking as different tanks like different things (thinning and cutting angles etc) ...you do however want the mesh making contact with the wick everywhere ...you will get punished with a dry hit if you don’t cause it heats up a lot faster than regular coils

5. Resistance - just don’t go below recommended low setting for the Regulated mod so it can fire (normally around 0.1 ohms)

6. Batteries don’t worry too much on regulated however some do perform better than others at the wattage you will vape at Molicell P26A’s are a really good all round cell

7. I said batteries don’t worry too much obviously make sure they are in good condition, like wraps and insulator are in tact, that you have a case for spares so they don’t hard short that kind of thing is general good practice

What I mean for point 3 ...oh yeah clean and dry your hands doing it this way ...don’t want any oils getting on the cotton which will taint flavour

Can you enlighten me about SS316L mesh please? I assume that's what I'm looking at in the photos. Vandy vape makes rolls of it but there's a numbering system. 150, 200, 300, 400 mesh. I was just going to pick the middle ones and try them out. But I thought I'd ask someone first.

Also, is the SS nexMesh sheets worth it? I know I love the Kanthal ones so I was thinking those SS ones might be good too?

what you see pictured is VandyVape SS316 mesh (200) it’s a lot finer than you think right ...haven’t tried the SS nexesh yet outside of kanthal...thing is the nexmesh is stamped out, is it really even mesh at all?

you can also buy A5 sheets of the stuff and cut it out (save yourself a fortune) just be sure it’s marine grade SS.

Even using this vandy vape roll you’ll need to save a strip of mesh the atty comes with and use as a template for sizing purposes (unless
you measure the original strip I guess?:teehee:)

I like SS mesh tastes better than Kanthal imo ,,200 wicks well and is a really smooth vape ...personal preference though I guess

edit: just to add if you do use woven mesh and cut it you’ll deffo want to be folding it over like my pics as the cotton will snag pulling it through and bend it out of shape :)

I use mesh every day. The VV SS at 200 is my preferred size. I've tried all the sizes and it's the smoothest of all. Kanthal has a noticeable after taste which I don't like. The 200 mesh comes in at .19-.20 on my Profile RDAs and Unity RTAs.
I also like the Ni80 a lot. It's at 100 size and registers at.09 - .1 The weird thing is I can't get the Ni80 working correctly in the Unity, nor Rayon.

I’m glad to hear this. I bought a Unity, and I’m brand new. Thanks, you made me feel better about it.

I bought a bunch of RTAs just in case. Two Recurves, two Dead Rabbits, an Aequitas, Mad Hatter, etc.
If it gets crazy here with Deeming, I want to still be able to vape!

I’ll ask Mr. M about the vid. Thanks.

The dead rabbit rta is a great starter rta. Easy to build n wick n a decent performer. I still have 1 in rotation.

I had a tough time with the Unity for at least a month. Now I nail it every time. However, I got a Kylin m and I've yet to wick so it doesn't dry hit. What a pain in the ass.

I had to read that a couple of times. At first i thought you were listing the RTAs you'd bought, but now I think you're saying you bought RTAs as well as the RDAs mentioned. Anyway, it made me rethink about how I hoped Wotofo would've released a Recurve RTA!! I think it would've done great.

I was just giving a run down on all the rebuildable tanks I bought. The ones I bought were either on sale or ones that I’ve seen mentioned in threads on VU. Or both.

They’re stashed away for the moment, simply because I need to save space here.

But there is no Recurve RTA, only a Recurve RDA
