This is the response I received from Ohio Senator Rob Portman to the email I sent voicing my concerns about a flavor ban and how flavors are an important option for adults to quit smoking and continue to stay smoke free.

Dear Edwin,

Thank you for contacting me to in regards to the Administration’s announcement on banning flavored e-cigarettes. I am grateful to hear from a fellow Ohioan, and I appreciate the opportunity to discuss this issue.

As you may know, the FDA announced their intention to ban flavored e-cigarette products, including those used in a vape. This decision came after increased concern of the health hazards and the expanded use of these products by teenagers. In fact, the FDA’s National Youth Tobacco Survey found that from 2017-2018 there was a 78 percent increase in the number of high school students reporting the use of tobacco products in the last month. Middle school use rose 48 percent in the same time. This increase in youth tobacco use is alarming. Given this new evidence, I applaud the Trump administration for taking action to curb youth smoking rates. Banning flavored e-cigarettes is a key step to doing so, and I hope that Congress will follow up this progress by raising the minimum age to purchase tobacco products to 21.

As we move forward, I will work with my colleagues and stakeholders to pursue common-sense solutions to transform health care and achieve meaningful reforms that address the cost of care, which is ultimately one of the key determinants of access to coverage. For more information, I encourage you to visit my website at www.portman.senate.gov. Please keep in touch.

Sincerely,

Rob Portman
U.S. Senator

To me it sounds lame, misinformed, and out of context! Definately won't be getting my vote next election!

This shut is really disheartening, knowing my children are growing up to raise their families in a country that would stand back and watch people die so that they can continue to collect tax revenue and other $$$ from a product that is slowly killing the people addicted to it. Especially when they know there is a product proven to be 95% healthier and be the most successful way to quit smoking. AND they go even further and go out of thier way to BAN IT! And lets not forget about the money Pharma has invested....

this has become bipartisan. but lets not forget this all escalated in the liberal areas. i am highly surprised this hasn't escalated here in IL. i guess the gov knows people that vape.

I would have been similarly scathing to any Beltway hack basing their response to a constituent's concern on which PAC is writing his campaign check, regardless of party.

Gah......when I say it out loud, what I think is going on sounds like it's bordering on conspiracy theory, but....

I think this whole issue of "ermagehrd!!! vaping is killing kids!!!" is a social media manipulation by BigTobacco and other BigGovernment behavior modification ninnies to create a lock down of the industry that controls a closed pod system-only environment. (deep breath)

Good bye innovation and small businesses.....

Very hard to outright ban here in Illinois as recreational will be legal in January.

Yes, but legalized makes them money. Vaping does not. And will not until they have it firmly under their own control. Which is what this about.

no, not really, been like that a long time. its just that one event brought it to the forefront, just like the vitamin E thing did to vape.
except nothing will be done about mexico, at least with regards to that incident.
i feel no sympathy for those adults , the kids, yes, they didn't have a choice. but the dumb ass adults did, and they paid the price.
mexico is a dangerous place , go there and you could die. play in the highway, don't cry when you get run over.

You know one thing that really gets me....why is it that all these vaping related illnesses and deaths are only happening in the United States and maybe 1 or 2 from Canada???

Really makes me wonder if (alrighty here we go) the government, Big Tobacco, Big Pharma, or all three had something to do with it! There...that's my conspiracy theory.

I was jokingly and lightheartedly nudging in the direction of border policy getting us pretty far afield from the topic of this post

I don't think so, but boy oh boy was it a golden opportunity. The politicians have been aching for a plausible justification for doing exactly what they're doing now forever.

They couldn't just ban it because it would be too obviously a heavy handed political move while all the evidence was in our favor.

As soon as these "vaping related illnesses" started? WHOOOOHOOOOO!!! YEAH BUDDY!!! EXACTLY what they needed. Knowing that along with the retards in the media, they would have no problem getting the bleating sheep in front of their televisions to jump onboard their campaign to "SAVE THE CHILDREN!!!" Which of course makes them heroes to the nanny state sheep.

A tactic with a long history of success. It couldn't have worked out better for them or worse for us.

i agree. except i will say it is plausible that BT "placed" that vitamin E, and an "agent" in just the right spot to get the bootlegers to implement "the plan". fully knowing what the outcome would be.

Too risky. It's not at all that I think these politicians are above such a thing because I most assuredly do not. I truly believe there's almost no level many if not most of them wouldn't descend to in the name of their own political advancement.

However, it would require the collusion of far too many people, each of which would be a loose end and potential leak. If it ever got out that these sicknesses and deaths were by their design, not even the most party faithful would be ready to wink at that.

Nah. I'll go so far as to say that they're not sorry it happened, but I would need unassailable evidence before accusing even the most loathsome creature in congress of such a diabolical scheme.

And EXACTLY when they needed it. I agree with @EdwinBetz. It's just far too coincidental. Lots of theories out there, but I completely believe something's up. Everything didn't just fall into place is how I feel.

i didn't say it was a politician, as in it would be nearly impossible for any of them to do this .

BT on the other hand. they have chemists, and they have knowledge and access to chemicals that we have no idea of.
it is not inconceivable to say that an "agent" of BT could go to that "toy town" or whatever its called outside LA where the bootleggers were getting their pods and supplies. and say to the bootleggers = hey, if you use "this stuff" to cut your juice, you can make a lot more money.

am i saying this happened, no. am i saying that this is possible ? yes

Both parties are crooks and I despise them all. I'm going to do some research about the candidates that are up for election in my area and if I find anything that shows they are anti vaping, I'm voting against them regardless of party. These hypocrites claim "concern for the children" while allowing cigarettes and to be sold even though the latter is still illegal under federal law. FK them 2 face sob's, vape the vote.
