Tonight I'm officially the proud parent of an Eagle Scout. My son passed his Board of Review! This has been a very long 10 year scouting journey. This is one of the proudest moments of my life.

Disclaimer: I know many have opposition to the changes in scouting over the last few years. I respect you right to your opinion, but please don't ruin this moment. Start your own thread and we can hash it out there.

i would have been there long ago but my older brother got it and didnt want to stay long enough for me to qualify and parents not wanting me alone at BSA events i was forced to stay home. i think it was more like i was forced to go with my brother just so both kids were out of the way (free baby sitting) for a time once he no longer wanted to go i was forced to as well.

But Gratz to Your Growing Man

I loved hearing his stories after he come home. He's had a lot of amazing adventures and lots of travel.

Hey, congrats. That is excellent. I think scouting is great.
I married one. He was in the OA and an Eagle. to your son and you.
My son is also in OA and plans on staying active in OA after he ages out. This past summer he went to Philmont for the second time, but this time as part of the OA trail crew. He says it was one of his most memorable times in scouting. He's planning on working at Philmont next summer.

He turns 18 on the 17th and then he's going to be a scoutmaster for his sisters troop.

Congrats, that's something to be proud of!
I was a Boy Scout, I was one Merit Badge away from being an Eagle Scout when we moved to Idaho and where we moved to didn't have a Scouting program.

I got ratted out for playing with matches, lol. They said I was a bad influence on the other kids ... they were probably right too, at least at that point in my life.

I’m sorry but that made me smile! It’s been a horrible day and I really needed a good laugh.

Were you trying to smoke?

No that’s poor adult leaders. That is a teaching moment. They missed the mark big time.

Yep. I just saw a vid on YT about a kid who got expelled for “vaping”. He was using black market carts and felt sick. He told the school nurse and they expelled him.

They had a big learning opportunity there and they blew it. Plus other teens are going to think there’s no benefit to honesty. All of this stuff about kids and bans etc is depressing as hell.

You would have thought I'd shot the Pope the way they made such a big deal out of it. My mother didn't speak to me for a week she was so embarrassed. I will say we eventually laughed about it many years later. She brought that incident up quite a few times when describing to others how rough she had it trying to raise me, lol.

I dunno. That’s a fine line. It also depends on if he was doing it at school. Now if the kid was I understand a small suspension but not expulsion unless he’s a repeat offender.

Nah, not that time anyway. I was just goofing off, burning stuff ... I was at least smart enough to do it where it wasn't likely to catch anything else on fire but that didn't seem to matter to anyone. :blah:

Shit dude. You were a young male child. I’ll bet there’s very few of us that can honestly say we didn’t play with matches.
Hell I set a field on fire playing with them. Never got caught.

we had one new scout to the troop a few years ago and he cane in with an obsession for fire. Well we taught him the right way and when to use fire. The kid eagled last year.

Exactly! I didn't think I could be the only one who ever melted their army men, lol.

So you were the kid in those PSAs about juvenile delinquents! Lol

The ironic thing is if you had stayed in the Scouts, you prolly would have been really good at it. My hubby was a rebel too, but luckily he got into scouting. He had a great Scout master who was a vet, and he taught him a lot.

I thought there was Camp Fire or Fire Merit Badge? I think I still have my water proof container for the matches. Almost 50 years later.

I can't recall if they had one for Cub Scouts ... for obvious reasons. :D

The troop I was in didn't do much of anything really which ironically, was part of the reason I was playing with matches ... I was bored, lol.

Exactly. If the adults don’t do their part there is no program. We have to do our part to help mold these boys into respectful, responsible, and productive young men.

Yes there is a fire use award in cub scouting.

Well, I certainly can't claim to have been a model child, lol.

I do think it could have helped keep me out of some of the trouble I ended up getting into but who knows. My mother did eventually get me into the Big Brother program and I can honestly say, that was the biggest thing that helped me turn thngs around.
