Is cleaning new items still necessary?

I started vaping in 2012 so I'm from a time when every tank came covered in machine oil and all that other unpleasant stuff so anytime you got something new you would need to break it down completely, scrub it with Dawn dish soap, and reassemble before ever considering using it. And sometimes that didn't even work, had to wash it several times.

Have things changed as far as new product cleanliness? I see all these sub ohm tanks and can't imagine needing to clean them before use. Same question goes for RTA and RDA, do we need to scrub the living hell out of them before use?

For reference the newest thing I have is an old Griffin 25 with a velocity style deck from around 2016. Before that it was an original Kayfun so I don't change equipment very often.

I'm on the verge of purchasing a profile Unity to give this mythical mesh a good try so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I like to clean anything I'm going to put in my mouth, that's been handled by factory workers.
YMMV....

Yeah man. Its always a good plan. Some of those Chinese factories are small shacks with 4 starving people trying to make ends meet and machine shops are generally pretty dirty as a byproduct of production (although fascinating).

I say yes, but probably not as extensive as you have been. When machining these metal parts they run coolant over them which I wouldn’t want contaminating my juice I vape. Having said that they seem to come pretty clean so a rinse and maybe some attention to the nooks and crevices should suffice.

I'm like others, I would. At least a good clean/soak in dawn, how far you want to go with alcohol and ultrasonics is up to you. Some ultrasonics can take plating or paint off so if it's a colored rta/rda you may want to be careful so as not to take the paint off. I consider packaging cleanliness to be a nicety, so long as it's not dripping with machine oil. Otherwise I don't trust it. Like others I wash anything that's going into my mouth whether it's a coffee mug, plates, flatware, utensils, doesn't matter what it is. I never assume it's clean. I also wash the tops off beverage cans, never know what's spilled all over them, what mice or something's been creeping around on them at any point between canning and the store.

Dawn in an ultrasonic is amazing. And anyone who would like to run multiple items at any one time in an ultrasonic without damaging it, scratching paint or breaking glass can consider this:

1.00" ID (or larger) High Temp Silicone Rubber End Caps - Powder Coating on amazon or ebay.

They work awesome and nothing gets marred, broken or scratched from walking round in a wire basket and vibrating against other stuff.

Heed this maxim; it has served me well.....

"China has no concern for your safety."

Or, to put it in a colloquial US street phrasing, "c'mon man, just wash your shit"

I just wash mine in dishwashing liquid. Then rinse with hot water and then rinse with boiling hot water. Same again when I rewick or recoil. I only use RDA's because tanks are garbage IMO been 2 years with only RDA's now so it's pretty easy to clean them.

This is from my experience buying new items from these MFGs

Haku Engineering: Absolutely clean these... All 3 RSAs I bought from them have had almost as much machine oil residue as China's Clones...

BilletBox Vapors: Boro's ... just rinsed, didn't smell any off putting scents

KHW (Dvarw's) : Not at all

528 Customs: Original Goon 24 - Yes, almost as bad as Chi... wait they were made in China

Fasttech: Misc RSAs... Absolutely... dirty and gritty... nasty oil residue

3FVape: Misc RSAs... yup, nasty again

MMV Palm DNA 75 Squonker... Nope (New Bottles I rinsed)

67Mods: NeoFet Yes... biggest Piece of Shit he ever made, Neo Mara, bottles were perfect...

SOI Mechs/RDAs: Yup, dirty threads, RDAs Dirty, oily scent

Kennedy Vapor: Kennedy 24 2 post RDA... absolutely clean

Misc Chinese Pod devices... yup every pod went in the ultrasonic cleaner, the cheap plastic they use... I swear its worse than new car dash boards off-gassing

There is more, but you get the idea ;)

TL;DR Yes wash everything

I always clean. Most stuff is hand packed in china. You dont know where thats guys hand was just before he packed your tank

Clean everything you want to put in your mouth as thoroughly as possible.
In times of swine fever, SARS and even simple flu that should be a mandatory procedure for everyone and everything.
Shoving your new girl-/boyfriend into the ultrasonic cleaner might be a little bit too harsh though.
