I think you people are being rough on those people. they are not being paid to know much of anything.
my job, if I was being paid what they are, I wouldn't "remember" much either. and I wouldn't care to learn what I didn't know.
my shops, well, the ones around here, some are pretty good. others, they are nothing more than a store.
Regardless of your pay grade. Regardless of your knowledge for the position you have been hired for. You should care enough about yourself as an individual to provide the absolute best service that you can provide. I know a few people if any who are employed in a field they know absolutely nothing about. Perhaps that is the case but there is at least an interest that led them to apply for those positions to begin with. If I were working within an industry that I am unfamiliar with I would take it upon myself in my free time to learn as much about it as I can as I am being paid to provide services.

yeah, that's all fine&dandy. let me provide a $25 service, for $10 =fuck me. yeah, I don't think so. you want people to care, you gotta pay them to care. a lot of people don't have an "interest" in there jobs, other than a paycheck.

This is possibly one of those just me things. I grew up having grandfathers that lived through the raging 1920's and Depression struck 1930's. They all held the same work ethics. All of them taught me "if you go to work for someone else as a boss, you damn well earn that paycheck." It's not even about caring. You can learn something but not care about it. I've learned a lot from various jobs I've done. I don't care about most of it because I still get listed as "unskilled labor".

I kick myself for missing an opportunity my wife's dad offered. "I'll pay your way, go up to the 'local', tell 'em I sent you and give 'em my letter. I'll get your ass on as a certified millwright," He once told me. At that time they were taking on trainees & he knew three out of four of the instructors heading up the course, and knew I could have done it. In my defense, I missed it because I thought the way her brother in law and her sister talked they were looking to open up an Internet Cafe & local ISP. Turned out that was all bullshit talk. I could have easily done whatever that work required too.

How can I do whatever any work requires? I learn how to do it. Does that mean I care about the work, or the new skill/s I learn? No, not always. It simply means though I'm earning my paycheck from whoever happens to be a boss. I can even work with folks I don't respect as people, but still respect their position of being supervisor. And all this while I was getting shit pay. So suggesting you need to pay people to care is silly to me. Because to me and how I see it, it's not about people caring, it's about people doing their job.

Of course, ultimately you may say that returns to caring. You might be correct. Although I still don't see doing your job as caring so much as simply doing your job.

working for someone of less = caring about them. working for a fair wage = caring about me.
I don't see anyone else paying my bills.

The more knowledge you obtain the more you are worth to your boss...the harder you work the more worth you are to your boss....when it comes time to be promoted or your boss needs a new manager for another shop he wants to open....your work and attention will make you the obvious choice...just like college boys pay their tuition...you have to pay your dues.....if you don't want to pay your dues, you will be making minium wage forever.apart from that learning how to work hard and learning develops habits that you take with you when you open your own bussiness.

Very true. However, many bosses simply see this as a weakness and gullibility. (ask me how I know).

Quite often the only way to "get ahead" is to look afield for betterpay+, or insurance+ or lesswork+ - it's endlessly irritating and really "work" to just find the damned jobs/employers.

Radio Shack is probably the best example. You had take a fairly difficult test to work there and it wasn't long after they stopped employing enthusiasts who knew what they were doing before nearly going out of business. I think this can happen to any type of hobby shop. You used to worked for a store or company to get the steep discounts given to employees. How many people have gone to a local retailer to see something and then buy it online for a lesser price?

Well, I know that leasing store-space is crazy-stupid expensive, but that's "location".. If the owner is so damned dumb that he thinks he's better than my ordering and waiting a week for HALF or QUARTER the cost, he's really got a skewed world-view. When the parts are here NOW and comparable, sure - he gets my money.

Maybe they need to start hiring topless employees to justify the in-store prices.

agreed..some bosses want to pigeon hole you into a spot they need filled...I had two critera for working for someone...I was either learning more, or I was being paid above rate...if not I quit and found a better job....I didn't view it as working for someone, I viewed it as working with someone, and if the agreement wasn't mutually benificial I was gone. This is bussiness....I don't owe a boss a whit of loyalty ....most of them would replace you in a New York minute if they can get a better deal....the massive replacement of American workers by illegal aliens illustrates the loyalty of the so called American bussinesses., but the more you learn the more valubale you are.... as a worker you should always be looking for a better job and advancement.....your boss is not your friend..he is you client. you are in the bussiness of providing skilled labor, not in the bussiness of making other people rich.

But... if you work in a vape shop you can always learn to perfect your own DIY alien coil building skills whilst customers are waiting patiently in line to buy the latest greatest pod system that they can't get anywhere else from.

while I do agree with that. everyone has their limitations. wanting, and even trying, to do something, doesn't mean you can do it.
ask me how I know this.

How is your rebuilding going, btw?

I like my stupid flip phone. Had it about 10 years?
would have broken multiple 'smart' phones in the same time frame totaling quite a bit in cost.

When the Matrix came out, I think the flip phones became popular. Or I could be totally wrong. :giggle:
How’s life treating you, Cromwell?

I spent the vast majority of my life in high tech and the bleeding edge of telecommunications, etc.
Strangely I never liked to just talk on the phone and most all of my posting, chatting, etc is done on here.
I hit ECF a bit and that is all.
Watch some youtube vids.
Do not FB Twit, etc.

Kinda like cars and such. Am a pretty good mechanic but never got into cars as a hobby or a vehicular worship thing.

On the DVD we had, they showed cool phones that never came out!
I liked Erickson phones, they seemed high tech at the time. And they worked pretty well. My phone provider only supports the ones they’re flogging at the moment, basically Apple and a few others.

I haven’t been there since I read smacuser’s thread “Sup?” You should check it out, pretty eye opening to me. But I’m sure you know about the whole thing. Oliver is a dick. Sorry, couldn’t think of a polite way to say it!!

Our ‘71 Dodge Swinger was stolen in the City. I loved that car. Plus my old man could fix it himself. My MIL gave us her Ford Escort, but it isn’t the same. All electronic inside.
