Glantz study linking heart attack and vaping just made up data?

Two prominent vaping researchers are facing off over claims that electronic cigarettes double the risk of heart attacks in adults, muddying the science over how best to stop smoking.

Brad Rodu, a University of Louisville professor, asked the Journal of the American Heart Association to retract a study out last month by University of California, San Francisco professor Stanton Glantz.

The study, co-authored by Dharma Bhatta, claimed adult vaping was "associated with" a doubled risk of heart attack, but Glantz went farther in a blog post, saying the study represented "more evidence that e-cigs cause heart attacks."

However, when Rodu obtained the federal data, he found the majority of the 38 patients in the study who had heart attacks had them before they started vaping — by an average of 10 years earlier. In his letter to the editors, Rodu called Glantz's findings "false and invalid."

"Their analysis was an indefensible breach of any reasonable standard for research on association or causation," wrote Rodu and Nantaporn Plurphanswat, a research economist at University of Louisville's James Graham Brown Cancer Center. "We urge you to take appropriate action on this article, including retraction."

Glantz says Rodu has a history of "slicing and dicing" his and others' research "to make the effects go away."

Stanton Glantz is a professor of medicine at University of California, San Francisco and the Truth Initiative Distinguished Professor of Tobacco Control.

You can link anything to heart attacks lol. My grandpa smoked for 40yrs and had 4 heart attacks. My dad never smoked and has had 4 heart attacks. Pretty sure I’m going to have at least 1 heart attack but I’d rather not have lung cancer, etc too.

This is so true. My autoimmune disease gives me a higher chance of a heart attack. So if I ever do have one, what’s the cause? Vaping? Hashimotos? Past bad diet? Stress? Who the f*** knows.

They haven’t fairly studied vapers’ health ever. England came the closest to being open minded, though.
So many people have heart issues, it seems, that it’s the easiest thing to point to as an effect.

Good post, Mr. C.
Watch out for the heat tomorrow, I just got a weather alert about over 100 dog temps for the whole weekend!

Funding initiative . that's ALL this anti vaping crap is about.
Not really. Many/most people actually believe the anti vaping rhetoric, Including smokers.
Unless they know a knowledgeable vaper why would they not believe it?
Our country seems to be mostly fear driven in recent decades,
True they are being manipulated against their best interests by their fear.
And that is nothing new in many areas of our society.

yes, really. the creators of the anti vaping crap are doing it for some kind of profit. otherwise they would not do it.

those people believe it because they believe what is on TV and the internet is true. we know otherwise.
when someone they trust tells them otherwise = holds more weight.

fear, and other things, create ratings. ratings create money. money, to the creators, is FAR MORE important than someone elses welfare

Of course it is all for money and control. That has accelerated.
But the thing is that the majority of the people believe that anti vaper crap.
And as long as that is true we will always be pariah's and screwed over.

ignorance is bliss.

yep. but time will heal, as long as the government doesn't ban vaping. and I don't see that happening.

I don't see them banning in the next decade or so either.
however they are going to make it a LOT more difficult to get stuff.
No personal problem for me as I am set with vape hardware and nic for the rest of my life.
however i hate that many/most smokers may not have it as a handy option to quit smoking.

True, but it still may have a bad effect on us as vapers. Not the heart thing, the FDA stuff that’s supposed to happen.

Good for BP profits, since they’ll have to do lozenges or patches which work for quitting in a small percentage of smokers.
I feel like I lucked out with vaping, since it was a pretty painless switchover from cigs. I guess the anti vaping smokers are buying into the bullshit that it’s chemicals or other nonsense! I tried hard not to curse! :giggle:

It will probably be taxed to the max. Cigs were $14 in NY, and that amount of tax from both city and state will be a bitch to pay.

On the flipside of the health issue; my dad smoked pipes, cigarettes and cigars from the time he rolled out of bed until he went to sleep, for 67 years. Yes, 67 years. In every photo I ever seen him in, there was a burning tobacco product in his hand or mouth. My dad died in 2004 at the age of 93 from natural causes. His last medical checkup was a few months prior to his passing. His doctor did a Pulmonary Function Test (PFT), and chest xray on him because he was a smoker. The doctor's findings were that he had the lungs of a 30-year-old non-smoker. He was definitely the exception to the rule, but consumption of a "tobacco product" does not always GUARANTEE that you will be a tobacco related health casualty.
