Wanting to get my first mod.... box or stacked?

This weekend I got an opportunity to try a new mechanical set-ups that an employee (who is also a local vape cloud competitor and champ) let me try while he discussed coil making, etc, in a shop he works in locally. They were fairly high end, using very nice 30mm RDAs and I was chucking out some pretty beefy clouds and having a lot of fun. I've been wanting to get into mechs for a while now. Now that I'd had a chance to actually try some and get some irl tips on them I'm about ready to take the plunge. But I still have some questions I'd like to ask you all.

First off, box or stacked? I'm using to regulated box mods and somewhat prefer that look since they are typically more compact for a multi-battery mod as opposed to a dual battery stack mod. But to doubt I have seen some in both styled that are simply stunning to behold. I do like the ability to use both smaller and larger RDAs on a box mod as opposed to a stacked mod which typically only really pairs with a few sizes... seems like 22-25mm is an average from what I have seen with stacked. Whereas, a lot of box mods can go upwards of 30mm, which is about as large as I think is reasonable to go. My currents RTAs are 24-25mm, but I realize that RDAs generally have a larger build area so I may have much need to go over that in an RDA.

Second, parallel or series? Or para-series? I understand the differences between the three, but I would like some thoughts as to why you would recommend one over another, although I have a feeling most like say to start with a parallel or para-series.

Third, adjustability. I have seen some mechs that have an ability to adjust the voltage so that you can pair in precisely with whatever build is being used, but specifics in this manner are not typically listed in mod descriptions from vendors. Is this a common thing, or do most of them not adjust at all, instead relying on your build and battery to determine what kind of performance it gets? This has been something I have not quite found a satisfactory answer for.

Lastly, with all this in mind, what mod would you recommend? I have a decent budget, but I don't want to break the bank. I am looking at $150 or less, or if I could even get a box and a stacked for that price that'd be even better. I am not huge on cosmetics, although I do appreciate it. Mainly it is quality and performance I am wanting over flash. Also, with that recommendation, what atty would be a good match? This is where I do care a bit about cosmetics since I do prefer my mod and atty to match (unless it's just so good it's sort of a "who cares" scenario.

I probably missed some things but maybe your feedback will bring up additional questions to be explored. Thanks for any and all feedback.

P.S. I do have a fiar understanding of Ohm's Law given that I work with electricity as part of my job. Not to say I am an expert but I have an understanding of how volts, amps, and resistance affect one another to contribute to safe vape vs. an explosive vape. But any must read resources you have I will certainly look into. Knowledge is power afterall.

Wow that's a lot to answer so I'll just start the replies and let some fellow members continue. Even though you don't ask about it, I'll assume that you know the difference between hybrids and non hybrids and the importance of the 510 pin on your rda sticking out far enough to make contact with your battery without causing a hard short.

I started with parallel, then learned about rda builds for series.

Mechs do not have adjustability, some have mofset chips that can offer some protection like 10 second cut off, these are called unregulated mods.

Two recommendations for you, check out
https://cloudist.store/ for your mech/rda @jwill is a regular here and it's his site.

Also find Mooch on FB or just Google Mooch battery safety. He also has YouTube videos. Get as much Mooch as you can. Vape safely man, good luck!

parallel won't be great with complex builds, mre suited to straight wire in the under 24awg range

Yeah I've looked at a lot of Mooch's stuff, been very helpful to me when choosing batteries! Also, maybe the ones I saw with adjustments were Mosfet chips... just seen a video or two were some had a voltage adjustment. Thought it seemed strange.

Worth mentioned that I am new to coil building. Soon as I can get some wire, a drill, and way to set up a clamp and swivels I want to make some claptons and work up. I have tried some premade coils of various sorts, but out of various claptons, aliens, juggernauts, etc... I always end up going back to simpler claptons. I'm actually using a really clean clapton the guy at vape shop gave me this past weekend and really loving it. That info may help with suggestions?

Mofsets are not adjustable, but now that you mentioned adjustable voltage I am sure that you're referring to a Potentiometer mod. The most common is made by Hex Ohm, but other manufacturers make them too. They are kind of regulated, there is a thread on this site that covers them if you search Potentiometer Mod. The Hex Ohms are very good and I'd recommend one.

If it's a pure mech you want, I'd look at some box mechs personally. That's what I started out with and moved into tubes later. They are easier to maintain and clean, which you'll have to do with the contacts on any mech.

Here are 3 unregulated box mods I'd recommend, Silver Stream Titan V3, Craving Vapor HexOhm V3.0 and Suicide mods makes a variety of unregulated mods you can check out.

Best advice I have is read everything you can before buying one and really learn ohms law. Figure out what you are trying to do and make absolutely sure and get the right batteries for your purpose. Presently for me the Molicels (18650/20700/21700) and Samsung 20s, 30 and 40Ts are king although I am known to use others depending on what it is that is being setup. Dont cheat on batteries and dont buy bullshit yum yum cells.

Get a good trusted ohm meter and something regulated to burn in/work out your coils. Once you have a firm grip on things, start with a single battery mech. One known to be easy to use, with no frills or multi battery setups. A lot of the brands make stacking tubes so you can add it on later but this will get you in the mech game and get you some unregulated skills and then once you have a better understanding of how everything works together and you can get a consitently enjoyable vape. Start making it more complex.

Single battery mechs hit hard as hell and for most people this is more than enough. I prefer parallel for simple builds, they hit like a wet noodle on beefy coils and just dont have that punch and take forever to ramp with a lot of coil mass. Series will give you that gut punch but you need to know how to handle and control that power or you can get in trouble. A single battery mod might very well serve your purpose. Everyone gets caught up in the more power, more more more, bigger bigger bigger thing and the reality is you can get a really solid single battery experience without much fuss especially when using high amp 18650's or larger cells. A lot of the Philipino makers create some really cool single battery "box" style mech mods that are really just tubes with a pretty square shell and they make stacking pieces for them for when you have the skills and knowledge to use them appropriately.

Ah that explains it then. Its a specfic sub group of mechs. Thanks, thats good to know! Good thoughts on cleaning as well. Thats the reason I dont care a lot for very shiny mods. Contacts are enough to clean.

Will you be squonking?

Yes but I have my eyes on a lost vape drone for this purpose so I will likely be going regulated on the squonker.

You might to consider starting with an unregulated, but protected device that will teach you how to build to the batteries, but keep you out of trouble if you do something wrong.

Thats a reasonable suggestion! I know tyere is some good ones out there that have aome protections, but not sure which specifically.

Excellent advice! I definitely do not skimp on batteries. I have a set on Samsung 25Rs which are one of my dailies, a set of LG HG2s which are backups, then I also have 2 sets of 20S which I think will likely go into the mech whenever I get one, though I have used them in my regulated mod a few times when I forgot to charge my other batteries.

I've been searching long and hard last few days.... MAN! Such a hard choice on what to get... I am kinda wanting to go with a single battery tube right now because I like the small size and portability for when I may want to take it with me somewhere. But I really have not figured out what to get... I know I prefer constant contact (obviously) and I know that some materials are better than others, but with my budget I think I am stuck with something using either copper or brass connections. I am considering going with a 20700/21700 though as opposed to an 18650.

Beware of the Drone. Some people have had ok luck with it, but others have posted about huge leaking from the 510 into the battery compartment.

For me, the door popping open every time I squonked drove me nuts!

Here's a pic of where the issue with the door on mine was. Others have reported the same thing.

I ended up buying a Topside dual which was awesome and now they make the Topside dual carbon with a Yihi chip

The Boss, yes, I've actually been warned about the 510 leaking issue. Apparently there is an o-ring you can get to stop that issue. The door thing is a new one, appreciate that info! I haven't made a decision yet tbh as far as squonkers go. So far it's the one that looks the best for what I am wanting, but still searching.

Topside is a top ranked squonker, but I'd likely go with the original over the new one based on reviews I have seen. You can't turn it off via 5 clicks on power button, which for any reg mod is an absolute requirement for me since I carry them in my pocket at work all day.

So still on the air with squonkers... I'd rather get a good RTA setup that I can enjoy for now because I feel like it'll help me decide what I really want in a squonker.

I can't remember. Wasn't that you a few months back who hadm't bought new batteries for a while and were picking some of these newer ones?

Yes. I needed a bunch of unmarried batteries since everything else was in sets of something.

Moli's have been great. All of them, even the 18650's. They dont have that initial punch exactly like the 30T's but they smooth out for a while longer like the 30T gets after a full pulls.

Picking up my Vindicator tomorrow, but I actually bought a new old stock Nemesis (might be a clone but idk for sure) stacked tube for $10 from an outlet store a few weeks back. Picked up a Kennedy 25 RDA from a local shop I like, which I plan to put on top of the Vindicator when I get it, since the current tube is a 26650 and the RDA is a bit small for it. Not to say it doesn't work great because it does. The tube had some tarnishing and light scratching (it was in a bin full of other mech tubes is why), but a bit of work with a buffing and polishing electric wheel brought back the original sheen. I even did the same with the RDA just so it would match the tube. Turns out even a brand new Kennedy has some tarnishing! Brass issues...

Anyway, this set up is a little workhorse! Not the greatest thing in the world for chucking clouds, though it does do very well for just a single battery, but the flavor on it is on point and it's built confidence in mechanicals. I have vaped the heck out of this thing since I got it lol. Looking forward to the upgrade to 21700 35 amp I will have in the Vindicator.

Now all I need is a good quality, reasonably priced series box mod to do some real work and I'll be a happy vaper! COuld use some suggestions there.... Upping my limit to around $200.

Congrats on the Vindicator. Great mech, have a couple and love them, although I dont build to 35 amps, I stay at 30 based on Mooch's ratings.

If you're looking for a series box you might consider a Dotmod Dotbox. It has a switch to change from series to parallel and turn it off. Dual 18650 but plenty of power for me in either mode. Quality mod, well under your budget.

Im running a 30t in it which should be safe. Coil stared off as a .15 resistance and ended up dropping to a .12. Not sure why. Its on the high side but should still be safe until I can troubleshoot why the resistance changed .3 ohms. Next build I will aim for more like .18-.20.

Thanks for suggestion on the mod, I have seen the dotmod before but did not realize it had those features. Sounds like one to look at again!

I may be speaking out of turn, but I have two of them. One is a first run, and it h as the door issues among a couple others. The second one, from a later run, has a slightly longer lip on the bottom and has zero issues. I may have gotten lucky on the second, who knows.

Congrats on the Kennedy! That a great first Mech to get!
Enjoy!

Well, technically, my second mech- I got a Nemesis 26650 first and have been using that for a few weeks now, but I liked the design and quality of the Kennedy much better, plus it uses 21700 power, which has better ratings, and is smaller. Overall mech is smaller, lighter, but more powerful and capable. Plus I did get the constant contact switch in it which is really nice.

But yes, I am enjoying it! Used it today on and off as allotted, but I still carry my RTA setup with me to work which will always be my primary. But come break times, out comes the mech!
