Memorial Day 2019

Please take a moment (not just today, but everyday) to remember the brave heroes that fell in the hell of battle, paving a road of freedom for all of us.

As a 4th generation U.S. Marine, and a retired, disabled, combat veteran, I realize that without those fallen heroes, I may have never had such a long glorious career.

Apologies for refraining from posting here. No dishonor meant now in posting. Merely wanted to express a minor sadness. My wife's grandfather has been away and over the hill for about five, maybe six years now. His son did manage to take over a stone that he himself designed, poured into frame and let stand. It was indeed a very nice gesture, tasteful stone too. Her granddad was an old gruff Army Sgt.. Her dad had not dropped his paperwork but had it automatically roll over to him, Chief Warrant Officer.

The minor sadness comes since the context is presented. I asked her dad if he had been to see the "old man" for a bit. He shook his head. So, I dropped the hint at least this year. I think her dad was afraid he may have to go clear the plot, which meant he would clear half the cemetery out of respect. I understand he might have been tired. I'm tired as well. To me it wouldn't have mattered. All he had to do was say, "C'mon mop jockey," and I would have gladly helped.

The cemetery is one of those what families recall back to before the Civil War. It's up the side of a hill and most of the families understand it's for the families to do the minding of it. There's a church there but they've long since lost any dues owed to keep it up. Not for their congregation to mind but for kin. And no to little kin attend that church any longer. So, yes there I was a bit disappointed to not have seen the old Sgt., of course most of the time I hear him talking to me anyway. He tells me not to hold to it. I let go here.

Samuel Bailey he is, just one the four grandfathers what tried working me to death. Cantankerous old dogs, anyhow.

And my salute back, sir for him as his subordinate. Think he's busy getting ready to go run raccoons. That was something he seemed to like. Near scared me one night out with him. I was across the corn field, sending his way. Heard the shot, felt a breeze. Decided I better duck. "Barn, hey Barn! I gonna be shooting your way, that okay?"

"Sure fine, after you near hit me."

"Well you go on and stay on ya feet boy, I can see you eyes up to high. I won't bite ya, at least not yet."

*chuckles* I am being as honest as I can be too. That was how we got on. The worse scares I got was when he started doing fool things near get himself killed. Reckon, I deserved it though because I'm sure I pulled similar stunts on him. No, I don't miss him.
