Introduction

The Aurora Play Lighter is a pod device and upgrade of the original Aurora AIO device by Vaporesso. Shaped and with the same characteristics as a Zippo lighter the Aurora Play features 3 power settings and the Mini Omni board powering the device also has built in integrated TC to give the pod dry burn protection. The Aurora Play has a physical button for altering settings and turning the device on and off but is draw activated with impressive ramp up for such a device. The pods house a 1.3ohm CCELL coil, has a PTF filling system and holds 2ml of e-juice. Coming in 4 high quality finishes the Aurora Play Lighter is well worth a look!

Aesthetics and Ergonomics

The Aurora Play Lighter comes in cardboard packaging in the colour to represent the colour of the included device. On opening, the Bronze version i received has a very nice brushed with artificially aged finish which from any sort of a distance would fool most into believing the material used was Bronze rather than the material used which is Zinc Alloy. The other colour options are Silver, Rainbow and Metallic Grey which has a nicely engraved design. The device is easy to describe as it looks just like an ergonomically shaped Zippo lighter with contoured body to feel great in the hand. It's Slightly larger and heavier than the average pod device yet neither too large or heavy to prevent it being ideal for carrying around with you when your on the go. Any branding or safety stamps are engraved onto the metal making it very understated which many will prefer. On both front and back below where the hinged lid is positioned we have ideally placed viewing windows to clearly see your juice level at all times. On one side at the joint between the lid and main body we have a protruding hinge and on the opposite side we have a nicely machined settings and on/off button, next to this is a little indicator light and micro USB port. The base of the device has venting and the overall quality is all there, it's a very nice looking well made device.

The Pod

The pod has a metallic top section, the rest of the pod is a very clear plastic allowing full visibility inside the pod. On the top section of the pod we have a proprietary delrin MTL drip tip which fits over a protruding section with o-rings. To the other side of the top section we have a push to fill valve so the pod can be filled without removing from the device. Looking at the bottom of the pod we have a protruding section to one side which has the 2 contacts and opening to feed the membrane switch. The fill method is excellent with no mess unless you overfill, the pod holds 2ml of e-liquid, houses a 1.3ohm CCELL coil and you get a spare which is always good to see. I found all the nozzles i tried were fine with the valve but a 10ml bottle with suitable nozzle is supplied if you prefer to decanter to that first.

Fitting The Pod

Looking inside the pod bay you can see to one side an indented section which the protruding section of the bottom of the pod slots into. In the indented section you can see the contacts and opening for the membrane switch, their are also 2 Black coloured magnets. The pod snaps in place and is very secure with no play, in fact despite the drip tip not being a loose fit it sometimes comes off when trying to remove the pod so you then have to grip the protruding o-ringed section to remove, very good job!

Operating The Device

The Aurora Play Lighter is a draw activated device but has a physical button so can be turned on and off with the usual 5 clicks. Once on all you need to do is take a draw to vape but the device does have three power settings. The power setting can be changed with 3 clicks of the button and the indicator flashes in the corresponding colour 3 times, Green is High (12.5w), Blue is Medium (10.5w) and Red is Low (9w), you can check which mode you are in by long pressing the button which causes the LED to light up in the corresponding colour. The LED also shows battery status indication by lighting up when you vape and stays on long enough to check, when it lights Green the battery is nearly full, when it lights Blue it is at about half capacity and when it lights Red it's getting low so charging will soon be needed. The Omni mini chipset also gives the device a host of safety protections which are indicated by varying flashes of the LED.

Review Continued:

My Experience Using The Aurora Play Lighter

Personally i don't tend to use pod devices but rate them as good devices for those making the switch from smoking or those that prefer to vape having the occasional quick nicotine fix (sometimes that's their preference, sometimes enforced by work situation etc). However i found myself since receiving the Aurora Play when ever i leave the house just putting it in my pocket and using while out and about. Could it be better? well, of course it could have adjustable airflow and the 3 settings could be constant output settings rather than only giving the wattage while the voltage of the battery is capable. After saying that the Aurora play gives a warm powerful vape seeming more powerful than the wattage it is giving and even when the battery is nearly empty gives a better vape than a lot of pod devices with a fresh battery. No primer puffs needed and the ramp up is impressive, i prefer a fire button but with the Aurora i didn't mind it being draw activated with the very responsive switch. The airflow is tighter than average but not supper tight and is very smooth, as mentioned if it had adjustable airflow so the full MTL spectrum of draws could be obtained it would be a better device still. The flavour is not the best flavour i have had from a pod device but is above average and cloud production is considerable for a MTL pod device with a quite tight draw. The lid's mechanism does a good job so when the lid is closed their is barely any play and stays in position well but when in the open position it has a lot of play which is a con. I also do like the PTF top fill method which despite being fine with most nozzles Vaporesso still include a 10ml bottle you can decanter your liquid into first. When you press the nozzle down on the valve to fill it lowers and allows air to escape around it's perimeter so you only get any access liquid if you overfill, it works very well and means you don't need to remove the pod for filling which is a big pro. The pod does come with a removable proprietary drip tip but as most pods just have a fixed mouthpiece i don't see it as a con especially as it's very comfortable. The drip tip fits over a protruding section which has dual o-rings and stays securely in place unless sometimes when you remove the pod you get just drip tip instead as already mentioned but that just shows how securely the pod is fixed in place and you only need to remove the pod when you are changing it. While using the Aurora i never needed the TC anti burn protection to kick in as visibility of the juice level is so good but it's still reassuring having this feature. The 650mAh battery is not bad at all for a pod device and charges in less than an hour while supporting pass-through.

Vaporesso have informed me that the version for retail has the same drip tip but fits much tighter so doesn't come off when pulling the pod out the device, the change is due to feedback from reviews.

Nice review! Any idea what the street price is for one of these?

I just wish the CCell in the pod was replaceable.
