Was watching this beauty today, from about 20 miles....it's about dead again, but nonetheless a beautiful volcano...if there is such a thing. Couldn't believe how close people actually live to this sleeping giant.

At the risk of bordering on the philosophical, humans have this silly tendency to believe that if something bad has not happened within their lifetimes, it will never happen again (and many still think it never actually happened before either). Put this idea of ice ages in your thoughts. Or asteroids impacting the planet and causing global destruction. Nope, won't ever happen to me.... So half the people in California build their houses on a cliff because a mud slide will never cause THEM to move into the Pacific. Yeah, right...

Yep it seems that most vapers now seem to think that the Deeming regs will not happen since they were delayed a couple of years....
Humans so short of sight....

Why is it up north and down south?
I have not read that Muslim thing Juice just posted, but here's what I remember from science class in grade school (yes, back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth): Up and Down should refer only to elevation. That is, you go up a mountain and down in a valley. You can go up and down stairs. But with relation to the planet and north vs. south? Those should never be referred to as "up" and "down" except that some bozo many lifetimes ago looked at a globe and the north pole was at the top, so he said that was "up," which made south be "down" simply because it was at the other end. And, well, you know humans and their tendency to carry silliness onward for hundreds of years.... Now, to add to this craziness, we also judge our entire solar system and how planets rotate on their axis and revolve around the sun (clockwise/ counterclockwise when viewed from their north poles) based on our perception of the orientation of this planet. Oh, and the whole damn galaxy is "up" on the side that our north pole faces. There really are days I wish the human race would grow "up" (implication being grown ups are taller in elevation than children, who often know more and maybe should run for president while they still do know more, but that's a whole other argument). :)

It's not a "Muslim thing" but a very interesting history of maps and facts surrounding the evolution of why North is depicted as top on most modern maps

And it might be true or it might not. Al Jazeera is a Muslim news channel and everything I have seen there so far has been bent slightly from reality (or the one we have been taught anyway).

On maps and such.
With the equipment that surveyors use today a decent HS grad could be taught to be one in 30 days.

imho people in the USA are the most ignorant of what is really going on in the world compared to the rest of the civilized world.
Seriously, Crom, how much time have you spent in other countries listening to their viewpoints? I do not mean foreigners who are in this country saying something different than what you have been told, but actually IN their countries, watching how they live and listening to them. And if we are so bad, why do millions of people every year leave their countries to move here (whether legally or illegally)? And if you think their views are better, why haven't you moved to their country?

Why thank you, dear. One month from today I turn 70 and am happy to be a really oldt phart because it gives me an excuse to be cranky all the time. :) My wife says that once upon a time I had a sense of humor and enjoyed life. Apparently that has gone away. Oh well... life's a beach. Surf dude!

Watch what the other countrys news media report on.

The vast majority of what is talked about in the US news is about the USA.
News sources from other countrys seem to have a broader coverage.
And not necessarily just the US's official views on what is happening in the world.

Me? I like BBC, PBS and some Duetch? news and others and filter thru internet garbage too :)
Want propaganda? listen to Shortwave radio today Seems like Christian broadcasting has moved in big time.

And yes I should move to any country whose reporting I like better than here???
America used to allow and even encourage criticism /free speech.
Now I just hear move somewhere else for my free speech...

btw anyone need some Kanthal wire?
Have quite a bit of it and do not use it any more.
Will keep some of the larger gauge in case I want to make a hot wire foam cutting jig sometime.

The morning started out at -6F and didn't get any warmer than +11. At the moment, it is +1. It has been windy all day with max chill factor being about -25F. Today was monthly shopping, so driving 250 miles and dashing in and out of stores in this shitty weather hasn't done any good toward taking away my crankiness, so I will try hard to restrain myself from saying there is no country - not one on this entire planet - with totally free speech and BBC news, just in case you didn't know, is 100% government controlled (or at least it was when I lived in England -- and you even had to pay a yearly tax on each radio and TV you owned in order to listen/watch what the government allowed you to). Freedom is an illusion.

Hmmm... attempt at restraint not functional. Oh well. Good night all.

Hey Crom, @Jimi is halfway between you and me and since we both have nearly the same temps, and he only owns one little kerosene heater, do you suppose he got frozen to death? We haven't heard from him for a few days...

I saw where he posted in another thread a day ago I think it was.
Just saw his name out to the right of a post in the new posts list of threads.

I could be mistaken but I am pretty sure I saw it...
