what does VG taste like ?

I vape raw VG most of the time. After some getting used to, it has no discernable taste. But when you're not used to it, it carries a slight aftertaste of rancid butter.
FWIW, I get my VG from my local chemist at $2 / liter. VG is just plain glycerin. The glycerin from my chemist is medical-grade - which I trust much more than VG bottles sold by vape shops.

You don't really need a kit to diy. They give you an idea of what you need but sometimes a lot more than you'll use. Vg/pg,nic, a scale that weights to the hundredths. Empty bottles and flavors. I got a couple plastic syringe for the pg distribution. But that's about it

Also, get gloves. The Vape shop that I used to go to, I was always talking to the same guy and he would mix up special flavors for me and he told me that the nicotine drops the use are so intense that they are dangerous if you get even a drop on your skin it can make you very sick so always wear gloves when you are mixing nicotine into something. Can you tell me where you have looked for kits that tell you how to do it, or instructions on how to do it and where to get the stuff cheapest?

VG, when vaped, ads a slight sweetness to the flavor profile
Absolutely excellent advice - kits are usually a ripoff on many levels

Just gotta ask, where were you and what were you doing when you discovered this handy fact?
And if you're really in a hurry, use the backdoor route instead of swallowing it. Instant effect guaranteed - and it don't take much to work neither.
Just don't use the bottle directly...

Bull City for flavors, if you have prime, Amazon for PG and VG (Essential Depot) and scale or syringes, whichever way you think you'll go for measuring

So have I (and then some - I bought 222 liters just before it was outlawed where I live
) But I hope you stored it nitrogen-filled brow glass bottles and in the freezer, because nicotine oxidizes and turns yellow over time, and aquires a nasty aftertaste. Also, plastic bottles famously release chemicals into whatever they contain eventually - which is why bottled water carry an expiry date.
