The end of free shipping on vape stuff from China?

The U.S. State Department on Friday said it would push for foreign postal carriers to pay the U.S. Postal Service more to deliver small parcels within the United States, taking up a longtime complaint by Amazon.com <AMZN.O>, UPS <UPS.N> and others who have alleged the current system is unfair.

I have noticed that prices at FT seem to be going up.
The cost of a Pico Squeeze has increased about $3 in the past few months...

Proposed tariffs?
Expected shipping cost increases?
Or just more profits?

If America can attempt to charge me nearly $30 to ship 4 batteries, you guys can enjoy paying little something--something too. :giggle:

This has been a problem for as long as I can remember.

You can buy something from China for $5 with free shipping but if you need to return it you pay $20 to ship it back.

I always thought that someone from China would never buy something from the US when they have to pay triple of what it costs just for shipping.

They mainly tended to buy raw foodstuffs and raw metals and such so they could make something of it and sell it back to us.

Could be exchange rate. Their currency took quite a hit not long ago.

China is starting to feel the tariff's affect.

25% tariffs on vape stuff from China by the end of the year.

Also I see the inclusion of vape stuff into the tariffs as a way for the FDA to track/control future imports of vape equipment banned by the FDA.

The only people really affected by tariffs are the consumer, when tariffs are applied manufacturers have two option either take a hit or increase prices and people don't like taking hits so the consumer ends up having to pay more, welp guess what that means more money is now leaving the US to China than it was before...

Nobody wins in a trade war..

No, the money does not go back to China. It's paid for by the import community, passed on to the consumer, ending up in the federal coffers.

I think we all expected vaping to get taxed heavily as a way to make up for lost cigarette tax revenues. We just didn't expect it to be as a tariff. We are being punished, not China.

Sounds like the point is they're raising prices to cover their 'free' shipping. Not that China prices are so dirt cheap that it's the end of the world, but China won't get stuck with any new tariffs in the end, the consumer will foot that bill one way or another. JMO.

In reference to Donald Trump and his China tarriff
I hope. Was always totally unfair usps charges 20 bucks to ship a small item to China but subsidizes China shipping the same item to the US for 3 bucks and some change. Unfair trade needs to be stopped.

I agree we have a terrible deficit with China, which in some ways will never be completely "righted" b/c we have labor laws here and a (general) higher standard of living that requires a much higher minimum wage to even squeak by. They have a giant population forced to work for peanuts, crammed into a tiny country shoulder to shoulder... a standard of living unthinkable in the US, and not one we, or any democracy would want to model itself after. Complicating this is that our own economy is tight relevant to our own standard, and working people have to save money where they can to get by. Add corporate greed to that, where most of the goods are now manufactured in China (including Donald Trump's tie line for one), and you now have a hard time finding anything at Sears, Wal-Mart, Target or even higher end stores that was not manufactured in China. Putting us deeper in debt to them.

IMHO Trump's 'solution' to raise tariffs is a way to appear he's doing something when he's doing nothing at all that actually helps the American consumer or the problem. For the last 20 years or more we have grown into a county not Of The People and By The People, but Of the Corporations and By The Corporations... meaning the top few percent. Corporations need to do right by this country and make their goods here, pay union wages so people can buy a house and raise a family, and more people will have more jobs and make more money... to buy American made products that cost more, but are of higher quality and put our money back into this country... instead of funneling it out to China so Corps can become richer, and China more powerful. A mod or tank or other vape gear is small potatoes as is this tariff. The change we need goes way beyond this. Trump represents those who want to keep the rich rich, at the expense of the rest of us, and every action he's taken proves this while he panders to the working man, saying the opposite. He is a carnival barker. What we need is a leader.

if they have to increase prices to maintain profits then yes more money is going to china.

...maybe another way to say it is, the US tariff will come out of the pockets of US citizens b/c China will raise their prices to compensate, defeating the purpose and not changing the trade deficit one iota.

China controls its currency instead of letting it float like most countries. This gives them a huge advantage over other countries. The US and EU have been after them for a long time to level the playing field but they refuse. So, they don't want to play by anyone's rules but their own but get all pissy when someone does something they don't like.

Tariffs are an economic tool in the toolbox of the federal government. Like anything else, if used properly it's a good thing, if not then bad things can happen. Tariffs can be cancelled quickly. It's not a permanent thing. It's also the not the harbinger of doom and gloom as so many opponents of Trump would like us to believe. People are so narrow-minded that all they care about is themselves. They don't want to know about the bigger picture unless it meets their prejudiced opinions. China recently announced the lowering of import tariffs in their country to offset the effect of these tariffs which is just another tool in their toolbox.

Fuck China, seriously. They don't give a flying fuck about any other country. The US should fuck with them now and then just to keep them from getting too big for their tutus.

China is just doing what they can to survive.
The best way to beat them is to not buy from them period!

I agree. The number one rule of any state is to maintain its sovereignty. A state is obligated to always be on the look out for improving its stature, because there are plenty in the world who want to see others decline. I'm not talking about just the US here, but every country that is strong is because its neighbors are weaker than it is. I believe some Americans have lost sight of this. The US should always consider its priorities first, then allies second. For too long, some allies and US citizens think the allies should enjoy the highest priority and they get quite annoyed when it doesn't happen.

It went away due to greed to increase profit margins.

For most chinese made items a 25% tariff will not make it cost effective to make it in the USA. A 100% tariff maybe would?
This is just a way to tax the American people more.

Or it might just be the wrong tool or an ineffective one for the situation...

It's also the not the harbinger of doom and gloom as so many opponents of Trump would like us to believe.

I believe this was the steel tariff that people were concerned about as it represents a large industry in the US and was considered bad for our steel industry, GDP, and the many steel workers. IOW, the reason for being upset was b/c it was a bad move.

Fuck China, seriously. They don't give a flying fuck about any other country. The US should fuck with them now and then just to keep them from getting too big for their tutus.

I also have no love for the Chinese gvmt but speaking of looking at the big picture.... we are currently in huge debt to them and behind on that debt... so while we need to get our act together going forward, the best way to 'fuck with them' is by strengthening US industry and jobs to move away from our dependency on their goods... IOW, once you make a deal with the devil and he has you over a barrel, you make a plan to not need the barrel before you detonate it. Not that the tariffs were any such thing... just speaking in general.

True. But there were still a lot of products made in the USA back then. The entire Sears tool line for one. Now it's all made in China.(Or was last I looked a few years back.)

The Chinese Govt pays most of the cost of shipping to the US.

What would happen if the US Gov would do the same?

A lot of Craftsman wrenches had Japan stamped on them in the 90's.
I was shocked when a co worker bought a set of Craftsman wrenches in and showed me..

That's a bummer. I always used Dad's tools he bought in the 40s & 50s so had no need to buy more, but needed some kind of special wrench a few years back, and that's when I noticed. Sad it's been that way so long. (And now Sears is going bust all together.) Craftsman were always good tools. It was like the end of an era to see that even they were no longer made in the USA.

You all don't think that Trump is just playing "art of the deal" again?

I've seen it from him over and over but no one ever talks about it.

He proposes some draconian measure only to have the other party come to the table and offer to give him a little bit of what he wants.

He takes what they offer because that is all he wanted to begin with.

They were the only tools that I knew of when I was a kid in the 80's that had a lifetime warranty.

They knew it didn't matter because Craftsman tools don't break.

I know this a little off topic.
But when I was 13 I asked for a set of Craftsman tools for Christmas.
Now this was back in the 70's.
And I still have them today.
Just thick, no cell phones, no computers,
Etc..
The tools were my cell phone, play station, etc..
