Vaping Teenagers And Marketing of it.

Vaping Teenagers And Marketing of it.

Teenage smoking rates are their lowest in 25 years — proof that when teenagers are provided with fact-based information about risks, they will make healthy decisions. Unfortunately, teenagers today are falling for the same marketing tactics that worked on earlier generations.
When discussing vaping with teenagers, they often believe that “it’s just water vapor and flavors” or that there is “no nicotine.” When the perception of risk is low, use goes up. So teenagers who would never pick up a cigarette are using vaporizers, and vaping companies are acquiring young, lifelong customers.

When having conversations with teenagers about the health risks of vaping and nicotine, we can remind them that history is repeating itself: The tactics, marketing and deception used in the past are being used again. Teenagers are familiar with that lesson.

There has been a surge in the number of vape shops in the USA. Research on the marketing practices of e-cigarette manufacturers is scarce and even less known are the practices of vape shop retailers. Past research on tobacco marketing has shown differences in the amount and content of marketing material, based on a community’s demographic profile. This study examined marketing strategies in vape shops and explored differences among vape shops located in communities that differ by ethnic composition.

Sixty-one percent of vape shops had advertisements (print ads and posters) for e-cigarettes and 84% offered discounts. Vape shops in Hispanic communities were more likely to have ethnic specific marketing material compared to shops in other communities. All the shops provided customers with free samples, however those in Korean and non-Hispanic White communities had a significantly higher prevalence of customer accessible free samples.

I have never once seen a vape ad targeting children or young people (unless you count bearded overweight tattooed hipsters) like I have seen cigarette and alcohol ads. When having conversations with teens about anything it should be followed by a smack to the head and some strong foul language about how stupid they are and wrapped up with the question of do you want to be a teen mother and/or father (depending on pronouns of the day).

Did you know kids like street drugs and they are pretty easy to get, create lifelong customers and there are no warnings on the labels. They are also marketed for the sole purpose of addiction. Movies, music and magazines all glorify the shit out of it. Pick a rap song and listen if you don't believe me.

If you are some anti vaping crusader you will likely not get a lot of love here.

Unfortunately, teenagers today are falling for the same marketing tactics that worked on earlier generations.

I respectfully call BS

When discussing vaping with teenagers, they often believe that “it’s just water vapor and flavors” or that there is “no nicotine.”

And your point is....

So teenagers who would never pick up a cigarette are using vaporizers, and vaping companies are acquiring young, lifelong customers.

Where is the proof or even actual evidence of this??? Again respectfully call BS - especially as there are still underage and adult people getting addicted to actual combustible tobacco, ie cigarettes

When having conversations with teenagers about the health risks of vaping and nicotine, we can remind them that history is repeating itself: The tactics, marketing and deception used in the past are being used again. Teenagers are familiar with that lesson.

I find this untrue - and I was truly marketed to as a minor and acquired a 37-year addiction to cigarettes at the age of 13

The postulation that vape manufacturers are using the same tactics used by tobacco companies before Joe Camel and the like were brought down is laughable - while I have in the past seen what I would consider irresponsible labeling in eliquid, that is no longer the case

The argument that vaping leads to lifelong addiction is also sketchy, as ample research has shown that the majority of underage vapers are not using nicotine, and there is also growing evidence that nicotine itself is only mildly habit forming - it is the other alkaloids in tobacco that are highly addicting and these alkaloids are not present in a typical eliquid

Why is this considered negative? Especially if it might help actual tobacco addicts switch to a less harmful alternative?

On the vape shops in Hispanic neighborhoods.
Any retailer will market to his potential customers in his neighborhood.
I suppose the vape shops should market to Lebanese people in Hispanic neighborhoods?

Lucy pretty much said it all.
A pretty pithy OP.

Yeah Teenagers are responsible and listen to good advice.

That is why I have to show an ID at Wal Mart to buy spray paint, glue and WD40 I suppose...
Well actually they just look at my old fartness and do not ask for ID :)

Why when I worked at Lowes I found a kid who stole a can of 'canned air' and huffed it in the bathroom and threw up and had to call an ambulance?

Kids overall are not nearly as bright as they think they are.
Most kids think that adults are purely stupid when they turn about 12 some recover in their 20's and some never do but raise kids of their own....

Don't forget all the halfwits that proclaim that their kids - or any kids - make great choices and are Good Kids/Children and "they'd never.." - it's a hallmark scam line.

Rates are lower because they moved on to other fads. Teens are sheep and do what the their friends are doing regardless of what it is or any dire warnings. Teens experiment and push boundaries period and will continue to do so.

I find 95% of all statistics get made up on the fly to support whatever argument someone is selling. No, numbers don't lie, those slinging them around just might though. @JuicyLucy & @The Cromwell summarize the issue well, @Train does as well. I don't see ads pitching vaping to teens, to be fair though, I only have four legged children and do not particularly watch anything created for human children. Well, maybe reruns of Mr. Rogers but he doesn't genuinely count. :) He has a humanitarian preacher license of which few are ever issued. I think he would suggest parents do that, parent, talk to children honestly about dangers and not only vaping but the dangers of diabolical oak desks too. ;)

‘We are going to take some vigorous enforcement steps to try to perceive what we see is inappropriate use by youth,’ Gottlieb said, refusing to elaborate on when the action will happen.

Interesting use of words on their part. they are going to perceive what they see. Is seeing not part of what we perceive naturally? I think from the use of the double positive here there's intention to do nothing at all. Double positives nullify one another leaving neutrality, or the car in park. The refusing to not set a date also hints at that.

The table shows that only 10% of current teen users, about 76,000, bought e-cigarettes for themselves. In other words, while the FDA and other government agencies pursue vaping manufacturers and retailers, the vast majority of teens get e-cigarettes from unregulated sources. Of course, even more teens use alcohol, which is only sold to adults age 21+ years, and m*rijuana, the sale of which is legal to adults only in limited states.

I added emphasis to help offer more food for thought. It is kind of like the whole War on Terror argument presented as rational for Homeland Security, which to me sounds akin to the Gestapo. The actual chance of being involved in a genuine honest to goodness terrorist attack here in America is eclipsed by something the magnitude of three of getting hit by lightning. So, chance of getting a bolt is three times higher than being a terrorist's victim. Even automobile deaths eclipse victims of terror in America.

My point being if you put vectors into perspective, clearer understanding of the facts comes to light. And yes, I do take into account 9/11/2001. Perspective helps clarify facts if used properly and without prejudice. That is what I think the last paragraph of that article was attempting to do. I might be in error, often can be. Still I can have a view same as anyone, that's it.

Can't wait until they start advertising Grimm brother's fairy tales unabridged to politicians, no not the Disney watered downed versions, the genuine Grimm's brothers fairy tales. Let politicians read those and remember monsters aren't needed when man himself is capable of evil. Although I doubt it would help anything.

Overall is the key. As a kid I used to go to the public library and read Carl Sagan because I thought I was smart enough to know I could learn a lot from that so one of the things I learned is adults overall are not nearly as bright as they think they are.

One thing that never changes is that when a Teenager really wants something they can usually find a way to get it!

In my case, it was cigarettes and beer back in the day.

"Never has youth been exposed to such dangers of both perversion and arrest as in our own land and day. Increasing urban life with its temptations, prematurities, sedentary occupations, and passive stimuli just when an active life is most needed, early emancipation and a lessening sense for both duty and discipline, the haste to know and do all befitting man's estate before its time, the mad rush for sudden wealth and the reckless fashions set by its gilded youth--all these lack some of the regulatives they still have in older lands with more conservative conditions." -- Granville Stanley Hall The Psychology of Adolescence 1904

"...a fearful multitude of untutored savages... [boys] with dogs at their heels and other evidence of dissolute habits...[girls who] drive coal-carts, ride astride upon horses, drink, swear, fight, smoke, whistle, and care for nobody...the morals of children are tenfold worse than formerly." -- Anthony Ashley Cooper, the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury speech to the House of Commons February 28, 1843

Think it has long, long been human nature, if someone desires something they find a way to get it. There's no concern of age, religion, creed, ethnicity, gender, orientation, nationality, sovereignty, ... humans ever filled with desire.

And this isn't exclusive to youth. We do not have to look far back in history for evidence of that. Prohibition.

I've compared this witch hunt to prohibition from the beginning. Soon as the gub'ment gets a clear path to lining their pockets, vaping will be the best thing since sliced bread.

Yes, can agree it is not merely children or youth. History is so replete with examples of it, it excuses one thinking the human race could/would have learned better by now. Unfortunately, such is not the case.

Entire thread is a waste of time. OP simply created the account, posted and bailed.

Time never wastes, it's always there because even without us making some ideas to fit it into, it continues onward. Seasons change, life blends to death and rebirths go on, tides rise and fall, Nature or whatever anyone considers Providence keeps the cycles if we're here or not. I understand your point but see it from another slat in the fence, my portion looks like a big circled serpent eating its own tail.

Fairly sure this will not be last we see of agent provocateurs, useful idiots, limited hangouts. This is a public forum for discussing an alternative to the status quo. Consider this Big Tobacco is only a vanguard for a vast system in place to control the farms of human beings. It passes us off to Big Pharmaceuticals, Big Litigations, Big Government, Big Insurance.

Automobile salesmen do the same as well yet with the product of automobiles and also in direct coordination with Big Banking (The Pharisees). Usury is a sin as it feeds Mammon. The whole system is there to perpetuate that, ensure its preservation. It's no wonder such vile shills are found here stirring the pots as it is said. I expect them coming and warmly smile to them. :) Let them have their weapons, we already know their capacity and capability.

Leroy Gibbs has some nice Zen. :) Yes, I know he is fictional character. Often Truth reveals itself in lies of artists who lie to entertain, or reveal Truth, possibly both.

Don't work the system when you can work the people.

Rule #35: Always watch the watchers.

Rule #36: If you feel like you are being played, you probably are.

Rule #39: There is no such thing as coincidence.

Rule #40: If it seems someone is out to get you, they are.

Rule #42: To get the right answers --- you have to ask the right questions.

Rule #16: If someone thinks they have the upper-hand,
…break it!

My favorite little nugget of wisdom/advice though comes from

"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." -- Eleanor Roosevelt.
