How often do you re-wick your dual coil RTA?

I’m probably beating a dead horse way past death.

(FTR I’m new to RTAs, I got this Feb 22nd)

I’m using the Kylin RTA and change the cotton every week, not because it tastes burnt , because I don’t want to be busy when it starts to taste like burnt cotton (I’m assuming that’s what happens)

So.

What am I looking for? Black gunky cotton ? Loss of flavor ? Both?

It just seems too good to be true that cotton is lasting me well over 7 days now. (I think it was Coil Master Pro cotton or Demon Killer organic cotton). Highbrow shit [laugh]

Thanks. And if this has been asked before , I didn’t find it.

It's really just whenever you need to change it. Some people rewick daily. I've had wicks last past a couple months. I normally rewick when I can tell it's no longer wicking as fast as it should.

I’m not doing it daily. Ain’t nobody got time for dat.

Rewicking as fast as it should ...

Do you mean when the air bubbles float to the top ?

I agree with AVS - do it as when you think its needed

I do mine weekly for the same reason - thought I find if I go more than 10 days or so, my coils really get gunky - but everyone's experience will be different

It was sweet juice. I use cotton bacon and Kendo Gold. Continuing to breathe in for a half second or so after letting go of the button will do wonders for longevity. It stops the coils from frying juice as it cools down

Yep. I’ve done that since I started with the Cloud Beast King. Ahhhhh I’m so glad I’m done with coils (those type of coils ). Ugh the $$$ and headaches.

Thanks.

I change the wick when the taste goes bad. Usually I can still figure out how to make it home with bad tasting coils. Like priming the cotton or turning down the watts. But most of the time I can last quite some time when I feel like I should change the wick. Right now I probably should have changed my wick a week or 2 ago but I'm lazy.

My juice is tobacco absolute with a couple other flavors like vanilla or something. It's a store bought juice. And with menthol added. And I vape at a diluted down 1mg from a 6mg and I use 30ml per day. Just to give you a picture of what I vape.

That's about how much I vape a day also - a little less since I quit using super-thirsty tanks at work, but still well over 20mls daily

Depends what juice I use. Cinnamon swirl liquid that i just set aside had me changing wick every 2 days, the fruity ones I have usually about 3-5 days.

depends on juice and how much you vape. I find clearish juices can go 100-150ml before changing and dark juices about 30-50mls

sometimes thats a week sometimes that's a month. If you wick is not clean looking it's time to change. if your coil looks gunky its time to rewick and dry burn the coils clean

Well my younger friend at my local shop vapes 60-90ml a day.

So ; 30ml is doesn’t surprise me at all.

I found out when I told him I don’t get vaper’s tongue. I’ve used the same two juices (2 tanks around at all times ). Then he said “ yeah I couldn’t do that. I go through 60ml easily and mostly 90ml a day”.

60-90??? In a day?! That's nuts

I ran into my friend from high school that I I haven’t seen in 10 years ( I’m 29 ). He started up his own mod/ juice business and said at one point he was crushing 120ml a day. I asked how it was possible. Like, are you breathing air at all ?

“Not really”. [rofl].

I probably go through 20ml-25ml a day. I haven’t really kept track of that. I just make sure I have 2 spare 50ml bottles.

I would get so deeply sick from the nicotine unless it was like 1mg or less...I vape 3 and i can't get anywhere, and I mean nowhere near that

In my setups I find that when my 6mg juice doesn't give me the nic head rush I'm used to, it's time for a cotton change. For me this is good because this happens long before the taste of the juice dissipates and the coil isn't nearly as gunked up so cleaning is a snap and IMHO helps the longevity of my coils since they are cleaned more often. I'm sure my lungs don't mind either.;)

Does this look like it needs to be changed ?

I’m still getting flavor.

I’m guessing it has about 40% life left.

My juice is light orange colored so that explains the burnt look. But I do see darker burning near the end.

I’ll probably swap it out later but I like stretching it to see how far it lasts.

I don't vape dual coils or RTA anymore but when I did I re-wicked them just as often as I do my single coil RDA squonks: every 100 - 150ml. I use Rayon, DIY my juice and the only sweetener I ever add is 0.5% of Now Glycerite Stevia but that doesn't go in all recipes. Here is a Ni80 tri-core fused clapton on a mech that I have vaped about 80 or 90ml of a recipe with Stevia thru. This will get re-wicked once I vape the last 10 - 20ml of this recipe.

edit: you will probably have to click the pic to open in an imgur tab then click again to zoom if want to see the full resolution.

I re-wicked another RDA the other day that I had vaped 120 ml thru and there was hardly any gunk on the coils to burn/scrape and wash off and the rayon wick that I pulled out of the coil looked nearly as clean and white as when it was first wicked.

Just wicked it. But the flavor isn’t The same as before. I probably put too much cotton in the channel. Damn it.

You vape an entire 120ml a day? Jesus Christ I thought I vaped to much at 30mls and that's with multi core builds. Tri-core or quad core fused Claptons, aliens and Staples seriously burn through juice. But I couldn't find the time to vape that much.

Rewick once a week as part of a general rotation of hardware. If I get lazy that might drag out for slightly longer. If I can see the cotton and it starts looking like a soiled diaper, it gets changed regardless. Just a matter of time before it starts tasting like a soiled diaper.

Well I just changed the wick in my tank and that was a week ago when I said I probably needed to change it. And to be honest I could have went longer but I could tell it was getting worse. It's all on taste. If it tastes/vapes good why fix something that's not broken. But if it tastes bad change wick.

Though be careful with blaming juice or wick with not lasting long. Sometimes it's coil placement, airflow, or just too high a wattage for the given coil.

When I first received my aromamizer plus i threw in some coils wicked it and vaped. I got maybe 3-4 days and it wasn't right. Dry hits or just not tasting good. Turns out my coils were way too low. I raised the coils up to where the airflow hit under the coil and now it vapes wonderfully.

another factor to consider is how you use it with juice
For years I had like 3 flavors I used, then 4 then 5. when I added a new flavor I added a new RTA and mod. SO the same rta was getting used for only 1 flavor at a time.
recently my tongue has hit a brick wall. NOthing tastes as good as it used to or at all. SO I bought like 30 new flavors to ix up and try different combos etc. Im doing alot of the taste testing on an RDA. But I am having to rewick it CONSTANTLY because a flavor won't go all the way away.

So how often you rewick is often base don if you only se 1 flavor on that wick or change flavors

Thanks everyone! I thought it was abnormal that I'm still getting good flavour after using the same cotton for over a week, since I read articles that said to rewick every two to three days. I vape around 12 ml per day (3 mg nicotine). Now I know that there isn't any specific time frame for rewicking. So I'll just wait until the taste is off to rewick.

I like to vape a fresh wick so I change when ever I get that wild hair.

This is an old thread, but being able to go through 120ml of juice with a dual coil RTA before needing to rewick is not abnormal, if you make a habit out of letting it cool sufficiently back down again. Else, all the cotton fibers on the inside of the coils keep getting boiled all the time turning them to mush within only just a couple days, and, a lot also depends not only on the type of juice, but also on the coil type, the various wire thicknesses, the various metal types, and the relationship between the power level and the length and diameter of the coils in cohort with the total surface area of the coils (i.e. how the latter factor is not necessarily always related solely to coil length, coil diameter and wire thickness, when talking about complex coil types as opposed to talking about simple round wire builds).

I find that the specific type of angrier, yet delicate and intricate, dual coil builds that allow you to take reasonably short hits while still nevertheless giving great vapor production are the best options for longevity of the wicks. What's more, a lot of these complex coil types also tend to highly improve the flavor, when compared to the simplest of the simple─that is, regular fused claptons being not more than one small step above the absolute bottom level in complexity, and refined aliens being not that much harder to build yourself despite their being in a whole different league, both performance wise and flavor wise, and in terms of needing to rewick so, they're truly a win-win kind of thing, if you build them to the right specs for how you like to vape.
