Have you made 3 core fused claptons? Start there, straighten the wire, cut them equal lengths, bind them with an inch of ribbon wire or a couple inches of high guage wire, pinch the cores flat and use your thumb to hold the binding wire while you wrap it around, and use toothless pliers to squeese the cores and binding wire flat from each side

And either put a lot of tension on the cores between the drill and your swivels, or use another piece of ribbon or high gauge wire to keep just an inch or so in front of where you'll be wrapping, and slide it down as you go in very small increments, the smaller the more stable
That's exactly how I did my staple coil. I had like 3 sliders. Then binding and hot glue on the loop side and tape and hot glue on the wire end side. Worked perfectly I just messed up coiling it.

I have not. This is only my second time building ever. I use tricore aliens from screwball so I wanted to try and make them before I run out.

I'll try the tricore Clapton's now.

No bueno. Pit sliders on each end and one less than an inch from my wrap wire and moved it down as I went.

@Mykreign it looks like you are holding your spool/decore too tight imo. it wont matter how you are holding your cores flat (sliders, keyrings, lego bricks etc) if your wrap wire is pulling them apart.

tension can be bad in both directions (too soft and too hard), and you will likely have to find the sweet spot for each build (depending on complexity of the core stack). i am guilty of being a little ham fisted when the frustration or nerves set in. i would catch myself holding too much tension (collapse my cores, break my wire at the chuck, jam up my swivels etc), and i would gradually loosen my grip until things worked. as i get more complex in my builds i realized that i was still backwards. you want to start with 'too gentle' and gradually increase tension until things work.

on this scale, you want to be somewhere between soft and middle (the happy face), and you are likely right now a bit too far from middle towards hard (mad face).
soft<--:D-------middle-------:mad:-->hard

every core configuration is a little different on what works, but i have found its usually easier to work your way up from 'too soft' as opposed to down from 'too hard'.

A little ditty about ribbon, 18 ply .3 wrapped in .3, hope it ohms above 0.1, I reckon it will

I'll name it "a pretty waste of ribbon," just wanted to build something and experience claptoning with ribbon

Just ordered some wire. Gonna try my first staples and aliens and such preeeetty exciting
Heck yeah. I made my first staple the other day. Binding and wrapping went great the second attempt I made. Coiling it is where I messed up but I'm gonna give it another go tomorrow after work. Gotta try again.

I would definitely try vaping it! Aesthetically, it looks fantastic - nice job!

I have a pic in this thread somewhere from maybe a year or 2 ago where I used 0.3 ribbon as the stitch in a stitched alien coil. I remember it was pretty neat looking. Can't remember if it vaped well or not.

This looks lovely. Looks like you gave it a polish. I think it came out great. I know this isn't the therapy about your builds thread but I spent four hours yesterday on a staple helix variation and I'm not even gonna post the photos because it came out so bad. I had all my fuses in place and I completely screwed up the coiling process. The ribbon twisted on me. I did get two good wraps out of it this time which is better than what I got last time but it's so heartbreaking to see something you spent that much time on go to waste. Other staple variants I have no problem with, fraliens, framed staples, SSFCs, they all come out fine. The ribbon doesn't flop on me. There's something about this staple helix, some code I have to crack. I think I'm going to follow @mach1ne 's advice on coiling and do it the way he says instead of sticking the wire in the vice and grabbing it with nylon pliers like a giant A**hole.

I don't have any nylon pliers, but I put several layers of blue painters tape on the jaws of a pair of toothless pliers I didn't use. Saw Jewbster talk about that in his staggering tutorial.

Edit: I'm getting about 44,000 feet of 46awg KD today, it'll be awhile before I need it but...I'm set...forever...lmao

Still No CLAMPS! AAAAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!
So called "royal mail" need to book their fucking ideas up and get the to meeeee

Sent from my MI MAX 2 using Tapatalk

Is there a tracking number or anything? Have you called the mail service?

I hope it wouldn't be on one spool, the weight would destroy all of your builds :/

Sent from my MI MAX 2 using Tapatalk
It is on one spool! But being 46awg, it's less than half a pound :0 says .28 lbs, I am thinking about rewrapping it onto smaller spools a section at atime before using it though

King Orchid on Ebay had one left, he buys the big spools and then separates them into smaller lengths, that's how they're so affordable I think. I don't know where he orders them, but they are Halstahammar brand from Sweden
s-l400.jpg

Edit:. I sure hope he ships it in that plastic box...I want it safe, 46awg tangles are hell

I know it sucks, but you'll get better results and fewer stomach ulcers if you try to be polite and patient with them :D

I'm pretty bummed that I misread when I was getting my refund a while back, raymo had said he would have a few left and I could order after the preorder, but I was a week later than I said I would be...so still no clamps for me either

Maybe that'll make you feel better

Attempting to turn a screwup turned into something useful. I call it a caged staple lol

(my stagger was all kinds of jacked up causing my fuse to be jacked up so I just le5 it rip and then double fused it with a smaller gauge. 2*28g / 4*.3x.1 / 36g / 38g all N80

ill try to figure out how to make a video or take some pics for the staple thread later, but no promises on that. i failed last time i tried to use a video here, but i am a little better equipped to try again this time.
finally got around to doing that. posted it in the staple thread.

10 x .3mm/40 all n80 alien staples. it felt like everything went wrong with this build, but it still got the point across in the video

This is why I bought a ridiculous amount of 46, can't wait to color and vape it
Gotta say I really love this build. Such clean work. You nailed the binding with the 46g and it just makes the coil look so clean. You can hardly see the wires it almost looks like one smooth conductive surface. The wrap is perfect. Much better than I could do with 46g! F**k I have problems just doing 40g. I feel like I always get inconsistent binding. It's also great how the coil looks perfectly square. Terrific job! I always enjoy your posts. I have a build I almost finished last night which is something new for me but my father ended up calling and that ended the night for me. Tonight I'm busy doing BJJ, which I have a love hate relationship with, but hopefully by Wednesday I can finish this build and coil it up. The reason I have a love hate relationship with Brazilian Jui Jitsu is because I'm always thinking about how I could be using that time to build instead but it's important to workout to stay healthy so that's just my way of doing it.

I know it maybe didn't come out 100% the way you intended it to but I still think the coil looks gnarly man. In a really good way! The concept is cool and I bet it vapes great (which is the most important thing imo) so I'm digging it. I really like the coil. Great job.

Edit: I'm super impressed you know about the Gracie family.:D

I'd actually only knew about Royce and his dad, but I just read about the others, all names starting with R lol o.0

Your right! The majority of the Gracies we know have a first name that starts with an R. In Portuguese their R actually sounds like our H. I read that Royce's Grandfather felt like that the sound of the Portuguese R was a strong sound. We went on to have Royce Gracie, Roger Gracie, Renzo Gracie, Rorion Gracie, Relson Gracie, Ryan Gracie, Rodrigo Gracie, ect. (the list goes on). I think besides Royce the most well known Gracie is Renzo. Roger Gracie was supposed to be the next big thing but when he fought Tim Kennedy (really tough military guy) who was also a black belt in BJJ he didn't do so well and the UFC released him. I've sparred with Gian Vilante and Chris Weidman who both studied under Renzo at Ray Longo's academy and in both cases it was literally like fighting a bear. The level these guys are on is ridiculous. Being 6'2" 235 lbs, in pretty good shape, and having a background in the martial arts would give most people the impression that I was formidable, but with Vilante and Weidman I felt like a child and that just goes to show how there are these different insane levels. It's super humbling. I was never a bully and I often stood up for kids who I saw getting bullied when I was young and I think that's due to the mentality the martial arts gave me from a young age. That you should always show respect to everyone just as you would want it shown to you. Or as the Brazilians would pronounce it, "hespect!". Whoa.. I went off the rails there, this thread is about building! I hespect your building talent!! Your posts are always great.;)

We can turn it back around to building coils - preparation, taking your time and studying your opponent (the wire and your own hands I guess? Lol)

This is actually a tutorial for preparing for a coil build *nod nod*

Ahahaha I remember this video. Oh there were so many guys who tried and had no idea what they were getting into. Meanwhile on the other side of the world there was a Japanese warrior named Sakuraba who was preparing to hunt each of the Gracies down one by one. And he got a bunch of them in Pride Fighting Championships. He will forever be known as "The Gracie Hunter"!:eek::eek:

N80 Alien Staples. Looks delicious! It doesn't look like anything went wrong to me. Just another great build from a truly great builder.
theres a lot of bad wrapping and i botched the color shot. doesnt matter though, i just built it for the sake of shooting a quick video on how i wrap them up with no vise/pliers/tension for people having trouble with that method. hopefully it helps someone
