For anyone interested in the alien stagg as there were a few. I have to correct myself on the 40 degree angle, it's much closer to a normal alien than it first seemed. If you alien at about a 10 degree angle let's say, so as to get clean wraps, then about 20-25 degrees is more like the angle for the cores wires on the alien stagg, and about 15-20 degrees for the full size alien around the cores and frames. That's what it seems like to me now anyway, hope it helps @KingPin! @mach1ne and anyone else who's interested. It was after looking at mach1ne's alien staggerton and trying to alien wrap ribbon wire that I noticed that, so props to you for pushing me to go further :)

I would say you can but it'd need to be thicker core wire for the added mass a dual coil has to equal the heat and a decent device/wire choice to be able to make a fat single coil heat as quick as a smaller diameter dual coil.

Here's a noob question for ya. Can you get the same vape from a single coil as you do in a dual coil set up?

Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk

Sure, like, double the wraps and you got the same coil mass right? Up the voltage, maybe a series mod

Orrrr double the wires, put two coils together a la parallel, and that would get you the same surface area And ohms as the two coils separate

I had a 1.2 ohm twisted 28/38awg A1 build used to be in my Serpent Mini, worked sweet on my Noisy Cricket, it didn't get too hot, was suuuuper tasty

I use 5mm coils in the pyro atm but I reckon it could go up to 7 maybe 8mm, with only 4/5/6 wraps depending on the width. I get good ramp up speed as well. The pulse 24 can handle the same coils theoretically although I haven't tried anything bigger than 5mm as of yet

I just bought a drill bit online and wrap them round that, I do have the coil master ceramic sticks but they only go up to 4. Need a few more drill bits and then I'll be doing bigger coils haha

I got 4 and 4.5mm rods from Fasttech, can't remember how big they went, at least 6mm I think

Regular phillips screwdrivers are pretty big, you know the big handled ones, some of them have bits wider than the rod though...and I used to wrap coils around a 5mm audio jack (guitar cable, etc) but be careful not to melt the rubber or plastic lmao

This is something I picked up at my work when I first started building, before I knew that precision screwdrivers made it a bit easier to grip while wrapping. I think there’s a black oxide set for $10 or a titanium tipped set for $15

So this is my 9th? Attempt at wicking this thing. The one side you can't even see the cotton and I get no bubbles. I think it might be ok though. Idk.

i agree. i can barely see what im doing when im working, so i can only look at my close-up pics after im done and reflect on how/what i did. i came to the conclusion after my second attempt that i am thinking wrong. i have been trying to see the spacing when i work, and then hold that angle, but if i can see it at that point, its too big. im gonna try to start my next attempt out with an inch or so of good, tight alien wraps, and then barely lead my angle ahead to the point between perfectly tight wraps and being able to see spacing...and maybe go a bit slower than full speed...

It was after looking at mach1ne's alien staggerton and trying to alien wrap ribbon wire that I noticed that, so props to you for pushing me to go further

I know your point wasn’t referring to how you can barely see what you’re doing when you’re working, but rather the technique you use to visualize what is going on based on how the wire is reacting, but just thought if someone hasn’t seen Strigamort’s post about a nifty tool that really helps to see while building, then maybe they’d like to check these out that he posted about. I got mine off eBay for $11 and the headlamp and lowest power magnification lens has been a godsend for me to be able to see so much better when building more intricate builds. It takes a bit of getting used to at first, but once you get everything adjusted just right, they are awesome.

I have a set of those but have only broken it out for the real fine gauges of wire. I like them and I don't, they can help you get a good look at the wire but the proximity you have to be to the wire to get it in focus really fucks with my neck so I try not to use them

It took awhile for me to give them a shot and it took some adjusting to finally get them comfortable for me. Having the ability to click the magnifying glass up and down along with the hinge it’s on to swivel the angle of the lens closer or further from your face and the led light pointing at a strange direction took quite a bit of tinkering with before I found the right position...and anything over the 1x magnification lens is way too close for me. I still can’t use them when pre-stretching my Decore because I’m used to seeing the kinks without the magnification and knowing where to stop, but aside from that it was better than the cheap Walmart reading glasses I was having to use to see things properly (getting older is a bitch, lol).

I might have to try the different lenses out as I've only tried the 3.5x lense haha might be why I was nearly kissing the wire as I span it

Holy shit, yeah...3.5x gave me an instant headache and I bet you did have to be on top of the wire. With the 1x it brings everything in a 5ft area or so into a good magnification level without losing any focus or causing any blurriness for me...if it was just a little bit less powerful it would be perfect so that I can watch tv without having to look over the magnification lens while building, lol.

@ScReWbALL i was wearing mine during the build in question :p i love that pic @strigamort  one of my friends called me 'low budget sam fisher' when he saw me wearing mine...i usually wear a knit cap or put my hood up if im wearing a hoodie, to protect my forehead from the strap. i guess that adds to the 'special operator on a budget' look :D i mainly use the light for building (catch your wrap wire in the light and its easier to see your angles), and flip the lenses out of the way. i like the lowest powered one for installing and pulsing coils though, i use it more for that than building. i like the clarity of the higher lenses, but i am so close to the wire that my beard is doing more work guiding the wrap than i am, and i cant see my angles (the most important thing to see).

Bahahahaha!! That’s great. I’ve never used the strap with mine...just kept them in the glasses type configuration, but I have been getting annoyed when they slip down my nose because the field of view shifts with them, so, maybe I should try the strap out.

mine only have a strap. i think they would be too heavy for glasses style arms. i tried to get a pic with them on, but like sam fisher, you cant see me very good

No coils God's with me tonight. Good run long enough for one coil. Does n80 seem to wrap any different for anyone else. Just feels different to me. Maybe wasn't holding my mouth right. Lol

You’re doing better than me. I decided I’d go ahead and start making some sticks of Alien wire with this shit-ton of prep work that I did the other day.
433ae44924f3576f02b3e1e6f50a391b.jpg

And so far the result has been:
2215ac750b227f4e10fbe3ed2eccfeb2.jpg

I haven’t had a run of bad luck like this in months. I don’t think it’s entirely just my fault though...I burned through all my 36ga N80 from TEMCo and had to rummage for remnant spools in the closet and finished about half my Decore with Coil Society and the dreaded LV 36ga N80. Maybe it’s possible that I have just become so accustomed to using only TEMCo wire for so long that the differences in brand is what’s causing my technique to be crapping out on me? I know there’s a quality difference in some brands (particularly with LV) but all of my Decore is mixed up now and yet as soon as I start spinning the decore back around the cores I can immediately tell if it’s TEMCo wire or not...it would appear I’ve accidentally created a “Blind Taste Test” so-to-speak. Has anyone else run across this type of phenomenon or am I just grasping at straws to come up for a reason why me making wire tonight is more like

Yeah I notice a big difference between crazy wire and stealth vape wire, but due to cost savings I’m so used to crazy wire now though.

it’s not the best to work with at times they really can’t spool for shit.....well certainly with ribbon anyway

ok i just finished these and i dont think im gonna have time to install/color etc tonight, so heres a pic of them as they sit right now...
alienstaggpart3.JPG
still a bit of jank, but my spacing is much better. i started out making a little bit of regular alien wrap, and then just pulled a little ahead with my wrap hand. if you look back at your spinning, wrapped core wires, if your wraps are tight, the wire is shiny, and if your wraps are spaced, the wire looks dull. i tried to lead just enough to take the shine out of the alien wraps i just laid down, then i went fast and tried to hold that angle all the way through. had no idea how the second pass was going (aside from the glaring mistakes in certain areas), but once i was done i took this pic and it looks like the area between 'i am making tight alien wraps' and 'i can see the spacing' is the right area for the first pass on this build.

1st attempt at wrapping the alien staggerton. Not perfect but way better than I thought I would do as I can't even staggerton properly yet got some nice spacing on parts of it, just needs to be cleaner now. @Pegleg Meg, I don't think it would be all that hard to stagger Clapton and alien inbetween them, I've seen it done before but never tried myself, looked cool as an alien staggered fused Clapton though
8b8a348b48e07ec56ade6c8dea6afb90.jpg

Update. @KingPin! I use the crazy wire company as well, didn't like how stealth vape were sending me wire out wrapped around card :/ and I know what ya mean about spooling, that 48g I ordered came with all sorts of stray wire sticking out so I don't know where it starts. Gonna waste at least a fifth of it trying to find the end.

@mach1ne Do you think stagger claptoning the outer cores before wrapping them with alien would be too difficult?
it was for me when i tried it last year :p i spaced claptoned the two outer cores and i couldnt really get into a groove with the alien wrap. i got an inch or so of it right, and it looked pretty cool. other parts of it required a lot of tension and the wraps that were clean lost their alien-ness (looked more like a bad sfc in those areas)...might have to try that again now that my staggering game has improved a bit. i think it would be easier to space clapton the center core and work around it, but thats a totally different looking finished wire...

is that the secret? i have seen a few people mention those but i thought they were for flattening out round wire (like crushing it into ribbon wire)...never woulda thought to run an alien stagg through it to tighten it up.

the clean parts look perfect  did you find it any harder than the round wire version? i was thinking last night about trying to do a full ribbon one, 9 in the middle framed by 3 more on either side...but i had a moment of wisdom and went to bed instead :teehee: ill try that when i can get the wraps right on round wire.

@mach1ne I wouldn't say it was a trick, it does flatten both sides out evenly though which I imagine would help with the clean look. Nice one la, I wouldn't say it was any harder wrapping ribbon wire, in fact I thought wrapping ribbon with alien wrap was easier than the round wire attempts I did. I just used 10 pieces for mine, couldn't be arsed trying to keep a single piece in the middle so just doubled up 5 pieces. Reckon it'd look sick as an all ribbon build though. Be easier to set up as well being all ribbon. Seems like the outer wire would sit nice and tight against the folded wire at the swivel. I'll have to give it a try when I get them down nice and clean
