What's new nowadays?

Ive been vaping and rebuilding for about 4 1/2 years but have kinda stopped following how everything has changed these past 3 years. I recently got back into things, but man, things have changed.

I've pretty much just built micro coils with kanthal around 1.2 ohms for my kayfun this whole time, but would like to take it further. I have mods and rdas on the way so I'm good there. My question is wire. What do people use now? I have 26, 28, and 32 g kanthal already. What else should I get? I'll probably try the fancy builds I've been seeing and also dabbling in temp control.

I know I'm not exactly new, but I sure feel like it. I missed ALOT!

Check out the "post your builds" thread. Start at the beginning and read through it, you'll see how fast things have progressed and where we are at now. We have some really talented builders on here.

@CrazyChef v2.0 and @raymo2u make little tiny works of art you can buy in case you want to see what all the fuss is about before you make any attempts.

I've kinda been looking through there a little bit. It's a lot of info to sift through. I also got some pre made fused Claptons when I ordered. I just haven't received anything yet. I'd like to be able to do it myself and get back into the hobby

Pretty much the gauges I use, except I also use 24ga kanthal and Nichrome. And 20ga kanthal, just for cloud coils. I never really was into temp control, i prefer vw. Plus the fact that you would need to use something like SS as your core wire for TC which means your coils will be lower resistance. You would probably want 26 or 28ga for SS cores.

Thanks! Should I get the same gauges for nichrome? I've never used it. Isn't the amperage different than kanthal?

20 ga is used at very high wattages by the clouds bro clouds group.

26 ga is a very good all around gauge for moderate clouds and wattages.
I use SS316L which works in both power mode and TC mode.

If moving from a Kayfun I think the 20 ga may be a bit much.

Nichrome has slightly lower resistance than kanthal. If you want to bulk up your coils For example say 5 wraps of kanthal = 0.15 ohm.. Nichrome might take 6 wraps to do 0.15 ohm. (just for example) I find NiCr good for bulking up claptons, since i get an extra wrap for the same resistance. Kanthal is a good place to start, and try nichrome whenever you want to play a bit more. Now that said.. regulated mods only require you to be above the mods lower limit, usually 0.10 ohm, so it is more a point of building coils that fire at however many watts you want to or have available to use. I only mentioned the 20ga in case you wanted to play with some clouds. I cloud chase as a hobby, which also kept my mind off smoking.

How are the other types of wire that you can get for tc? Is one better than the others, or just preference? I haven't read too much into that yet, just sticking to what's familiar for now.

Ya... resistance. Idk why I put amps lol. Thanks for the info! I'll have to get some nichrome and see how it is.

I plan on sticking to regulated. I like the safety.

you are pretty much stuck with either NI200 or SS wire for TC.
I have heard that SS430 works better for TC than does the SS316L that I use. But I have never tried it.
there are those that claim a hohm brand of mod will do TC but it is very fiddley and kinda TC.

I think I'll have to try some of each. Tc came out right as I was straying away so I never got to see it grow

if you want to get into claptons and fancier stuff, youll want to grab some wrap wire. i recommend no larger than 36. the choice of metal doesnt really matter for wrap on a technical level (resistance, ramp up etc), but lots of people prefer one or the other (lots of people dont like the taste of a certain metal, but i cant tell the difference and i mix them all), so try them all.

we pretty much only use ka1 (and some ppl like kd), n80 and various ss wire these days. ti and ni200 are only for tc mods, and mainly for tiny mtl style coils due to the very low resistance of those metals. ss works in tc and power mode/mech mods, so if you are into trying tc, stick with that. its also high enough in resistance that you can build medium/complex wire without going super low in resistance.

for cores, most of what i build is either 26 or 28, with occasional use for 24, and some fancier builds utilizing multiple strands of 30 or higher. if you get into building enough to take a crack at staple coils and the variants, youll need some ribbon wire. generally .3 and .4 are all i use. for the choice of metal for your core wires, its up to your preference mainly. they ramp up slightly differently, as stated above, some people dont like the flavor of certain metals, and they all have different resistance. i pretty much just mix and match to get the resistance i want, at the coil mass that i want (you can do the math for all this at wire wizard).

@skt239 already pointed you to the builds thread, so all i got left is, welcome to the forum

LOL..if you waited another 6 months you would have come back into vouge....you missed the whole cloud bro phase vaping has been suffering under, where every newbie was asking "how do I get bigger clouds" and lugging around mods as big as car batteries...... to now ...where there's been a new revivial in the interest of MTL vaping...with a recent surge in the release of alot more MTL atties.....it's basiclly the same with a few more bells and whistles....squonking is alot more popular than it was 3 years ago even more popular than it was a year ago, it;s alot more affordable, alot more gear..not just REO and Mark Bugs..not as many independent modders left anymore,,,,and the mods are alot uglier.

This answers a lot of questions, thank you very much! I seem to recall taste was a factor with nichrome for some so I avoided it altogether. I'm definitely going to be trying a lot and posting how it goes... once I get everything lol.

Lol. I think it was those guys asking that that pushed me away. Don't get me wrong, I loved clouds, but this was always about not smoking to me. Those guys always had some crazy low builds on mechs with junk batteries wondering why their hand was so hot. I'm glad mtl is gaining more traction, I don't think I would've quit smoking if I didn't have that.

I'm so happy squonking is popular. Even happier that some are regulated now!

Just keep in mind, the question was about clouds... now if you ask about flavor, you will get entirely different answers.

I like ss316L for standalone or cores for claptons. It has a clean taste to me (others prefer other metal types). I really like the versatility, it works in both temp and wattage modes so if I want to switch out on the fly I can. Kanthal is wattage only (outside of odd circumstances like hohmtech's mods with the fsk chip), ni80 is wattage only (if used as core, if wrap on a clapton/alien doesn't matter), ni200 is temp control only. Titanium seemed to come and go, rarely do I see anything about that. Not sure if for health reasons, cost or what, maybe they just didn't perform well.

Only downside which may not apply if you're not about big massive coils, ss316L has pretty low resistance. You'll likely end up using thinner gauges like 26-28ga and claptons (if you get into that) will be smaller/thinner and more delicate to keep resistance from dropping too far.

When buying premade stuff like premade claptons and fancier builds, especially on spools, don't be discouraged if the taste isn't spectacular. Just from my own experience I got a spool of mkws (cheap stuff) that was all stainless, 28ga core with 32ga wrap staggered fused clapton. I made a couple coils from it in varying sizes and just didn't care for it. Got spools of plain round wire and made my own with thinner higher gauge wrap and the difference was pretty huge both in flavor and performance.

There are good premade coils out there. Handmade stuff by various people or just better quality premade. A lot of cheaper stuff already made either uses low grade wire or they build funky versions of a coil. I've seen some with a core wire wrapped with flat ribbon wire in loose spirals calling it 'clapton' and it's just not a clapton. Sometimes they cut corners and may give you a poor impression of what a particular coil type is supposed to be. Like getting a pressed piece of turkey in a can vs a real smoked or roasted whole turkey.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to look into ss a little more. I was under the impression that it was used for tc only. I will be building low ohm high wattage drippers and trying different types of wire might be interesting to me.

I did buy some premade Claptons, from coil master I believe, but I haven't tried them yet. I only have 6 so I plan to use them while I'm learning how to make my own. I don't have high hopes for them, but they seem pretty solid. I'll probably try to avoid premade in the future, unless I can't replicate what I get from them. It isn't rocket science though.
