Credit card theft issue

Two nights ago, my husband was checking our Capital One account and found numerous fraudulent charges on it. All of them were for ticket places, like someone was buying concert tickets, for $140 or more. I called the 24 hour CS line and, fortunately, they have a 100% fraud insurance thing, so they removed the fraudulent charges and have initiated an investigation. They also FedEx'd me a new card with a new number on it.

The thing is, it's our backup account, so to speak. We only use it for emergencies or special occasions. When I was buying all of my birthday stuff, this is the card I put them on rather than our normal account. And everything I bought was from either Amazon or FastTech. I can't think of anything I bought from any other place. I doubt it was Amazon, as I've had a Prime account with them for like a decade and never had a problem. I didn't have any problem with my previous FastTech purchases either, though. So I'm really hoping it wasn't them as I want to continue purchasing from them.

Just posting this as a head's up for people. Make sure you keep a close eye on your account activity.

There has been a big thing with I believe TransUnion having been hacked. Might want to check into that. They are offering a free credit monitoring for a year I do believe.

And that was credit check breaches, I believe. Identity theft. This was just credit card number theft.

They said credit card numbers were obtained also

But it was also back in early-ish September. I'd think it would have been fixed by now. This just happened after 10/17, which was when my last valid charge went through. The suddenly 7 or 8 charges all at the same time were made. Some were for Ticket Master, some for some other ticket place, and several for some ticket geek place I'd never heard of. Hopefully, the investigation will show who/where the breach was.

You would think, but they just gave a link to see if you're possibly effected and if so they toss another link for the monitoring even though it's supposed to be for everyone who signs up. So who knows what the real protocol is... The credit card number could have been stolen and they were laying low with it or they sold it to someone else who decided to use it.. Never really know... Hope y'all get it squared away without any real damage done...

Was a 50\50 chance of getting the right company... Good thing I don't gamble.. Lol

Sent from my N9560 using Tapatalk
Nah, a one-in-three chance. You forgot Experian. As for correcting the problem since the breach, remember this is the same company that sent in the Congressional hearing and said it couldn't happen and why bother installing safeguards...

I've had issues with fraudulent charges and funky activity using Amazon. I've also gotten notices from nicopure labs (halo) when they've had issues. I even had issues with people draining the bank account before I used the card for online purchases and only used it locally in person. One of the last times I dealt with it customer service in the claims department pretty much just said 'yep, sign of the times. it happens'. That's how often it happens. Everything from fake businesses in the southeast U.S. to people spending freely across several countries in Europe.

You'd be surprised what happens with various companies, none are truly 'safe'. I'm sure shady things go on in China like they do everywhere else. A news story I just came across today, a couple in Florida ordered some storage tubs from Amazon. Apparently the new preferred customer program is 'order 4 storage tubs and get 65lbs of h*rb free'.

What would be the difference? Can't they charge my PP account, too?
Not w/o an authorization.. now whomever had your cap one account numbers, has your name, addy, ETC
so it could have been worse.
Note that when you pay with PP, a PP pop up pops up and asks if you okay the purchase and whether you want to use
any money you might have in your PP account or your CC or bank account.
You gotta pick, click otay then it goes back to the checkout to finalize your order.

I read that story. That was pretty funny.

Ahh, ok, thanks. I've had a PP account forever but only used it on Ebay and the last time I used it was about 3 years ago. :giggle:

Now you'll use it more often ;)
I had to wait a year for my IRS return due to identity theft one year..also had my Cap one account used
to buy a pair of high heel sneakers on line once, and it was used to buy a pack of smokes 6 different times..in Maryland..(I live in FL)
and they tried to buy a $900 laptop from Newegg once...Newegg caught the fraud
before Cap one did 'cause I have a Newegg account and the culprit didn't know my password.

Paranoia strikes deep. My hometown is the fraud capital of the USA...I don't trust anybody

BTW, one of those times it was a popular vape stuff vendor out of Washington state

Lmao, when you realize your card's been compromised but you're more outraged over the heinous crap they bought with it than you are that they ran up charges. Dammit, someone's using my card.. and they bought high heeled sneakers, oh come on! Sure I'll get my account sorted out but those targeted ads are never going away.

What's odd/interesting is that Capital One put a hold on my card a couple of weeks ago when I first started buying stuff from FT on it. Everything kept getting rejected. I had to contact them to ask why and they said that they saw the charges from China and weren't sure if they were fraudulent or not so they put a hold on my account until I cleared it up. I had to log into my account and verify each charge individually. But they didn't notice a buttload of ticket charges on it all of a sudden? o_O

Paypal has TERRIFIC safeguards, so unless someone actually knows your PP password, it would be very difficult. Also, PP, if someon charges something to your acct that you didn't authorize, will remove it IMMEDIATELY and then go after the culprit with "guns blazing" -- that happened to me with a web host that mysteriously vanished after taking my money, forcing me to seek and pay for new hosting elsewhere, then had the fucking nerve to try and charge another 6 months of hosting to the vanished purveyor -- PP got them completely blackballed, maybe even prosecuted. PP takes security VERY seriously.

About two months ago, someone was trying to use my Amazon Prime Visa card to make fraudulent purchases of over $1,000.00.

The bank called me and asked me about these purchases and went over my list of purchases to determine which charges were fraudulent or authorized.

To that date, I have only used my card to make purchases from Amazon.com as well as one time for my Copay at my Pain Management Doctor's office.

They did cancel my card and overnighted a new card to me and all was well with the world.

But I did have a conversation with the office manager at the Doctors office about the situation.

Yea..high heel sneakers..LOL, really..I started getting all kinds of weird ads.
The part that got to me was the 6 sales for packs of drugstore smokes.. I use different cards for different purchases to help me
track down who tried to jack me. The six ciggie purchases were made by somebody who got my number from
that "Express" vape stuff vendor in Washington.

The attempted laptop purchase was the Russian store manager at CVS

The high heel sneakers was my old dentist's assistant. She was hot..would have loved to see her in the sneakers.

I didn't tell my dentist anything..needed more frauds to nail his assistant good.
But I'm pretty sure I got the person at the vape vendor fired..

They don't mess around in China..they will not only use your account, they will clone your card
to look like the real one complete with the 3 little CVV numbers on the back. Then they go party in Hong Kong

I miss having a big time bank rather than the bullshit, podunk credit union I have now. We had fraud on our account from TX and the bank new it was not us. Despite that, I had to go to my local PD and file a police report and then sign an affidavit at the bank. That was just to receive a provisional credit, 2 months later and they are still "investigating" it.

That sucks. When I had a problem with the credit card tied to our main bank account, the bank was really good about attending to the issue. It's not a credit union, but is a small-ish regional bank.

I'd rather do without Paypal's terms of service than have some culprit making free with my credit card numbers. So if the thing you buy from FT isn't what you wanted, or it's broke, PP won't do anything to help remedy it... but at least some numskull in china doesn't have your CC numbers.

I have had really good luck with Paypal.

I have opened two disputes with them, one through eBay and the other one directly and both were resolved in a timely manner and in my favor.

My last CC(debit, I don't use credit cards) problem this summer came after an Amazon purchase.

Got a call that said the card was used in a Canada gas station.

Never had a problem with fastech.

I just received mail from an on-line vender that Vapor Products aren't covered by PayPal's terms of service. ELiquid Depot.
Vapor products in the USA aren't covered in PayPal tos.
Things bought from China are still legal and covered.
This is why all China vendors accept PayPal.

But if a US vendor fucked you over on PayPal they would get in trouble for accepting PayPal not you for using it.

When you open a PayPal case there is no need to get into what you bought and why.
Just the fact that you paid an amount of money for something and received nothing is the only information you need. It's up to the seller to prove they shipped something to you and they need to upload tracking that proves their product was delivered.

If you are one of those people who has crack heads stealing packages from outside your house or you have a junkie relative that lives in your basement and steals the mail then PayPal is definitely not for you because you will lose that case with them every time.

I've found that certain vendors are flagged. And, any vendor that has any word related to vaping is declined. I have a $26 credit with Element Vapes that I can't use. Declined by PP and by my visa. Now what?

As for your credit card fraud, it was the Equifax breach. See sticky in this section.

I'm terrible with money and that may be a good thing in this situation.i have now bank account and cash is King. I have a pre paid Walmart card for online purchases. I load and instantly spend what I need to. I really hate that happened to you though. It sucks to work hard for your nice things and here comes someone with nicer things from your money. Just terrible.

I use my bank card with VaporDNA and Element Vape with no problems.

Same here, never had anything declined just because it had "vape" in the title -- DesertVapes was one of my most-frequent shopping spots, a couple yrs back. Also VaporBeast and MtBakerVapor.

First, my Visa was compromised to the tune of $1,000+ since there are 2 penny charges pending. Card closed. Will be reissued.

Secondly, Element Vapes offered me no way to pay for merchandise. PayPal declined. My Visa declined (previously). And I have a $26.00 credit with them I want to use. I ordered from them before with no problem. It's PayPal that is declining vape related charges. Apparently my bank is also. I have the phone number of the Fraud Prevention department. The young lady I spoke with said that they would be the one to answer my question.

Now Element Vapes has revamped their website, the Log-in page won't load the website.
Hubby pulled a selfish ass-hole move today. Elevated?....ya think? I'm so pissed I could jump through my window.
