New Vaccine May Alleviate Nicotine Addiction

A professor at Virginia Tech. may have come up with a solution to all of our nicotine problems. Mike Zhang, professor of biological systems engineering was awarded 2.4 million to conduct studies and test this new vaccine on mice.

Here is a little tidbit of what exactly the article said:

"Nicotine is one of the most dependency inducing drugs out there," said Zhang, "It's just as addictive as much harder drugs such as h*roine or c*caine. When someone smokes, the brain makes more dopamine in response to receiving the nicotine. Over time your body needs more nicotine just to feel normal and that's when addiction occurs. By using this vaccine to block the pleasure response, a person addicted to nicotine will be much more likely to quit smoking or consuming tobacco products."

Cigarette smoke contains 250 chemicals known to be toxic and smoking is the most significant source of preventable disease and premature death worldwide. Smoking-related diseases claim an estimated 443,000 American lives each year and in the United States about 8.6 million people have at least one serious illness caused by smoking, according to the American Lung Association.

Zhang's research could offer the millions of smokers in the United States — and the estimated 1 billion smokers worldwide that suffer from nicotine addiction — another tool for kicking the nicotine habit.

He is performing the research in conjunction with Marion Ehrich, a professor of pharmacology and toxicology at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, and Dr. Paul Pentel, a professor of medicine and pharmacology at the University of Minnesota.

Wow really? A vaccine that magically makes mice lose the pleasure center of their brains. cats everywhere are laughing their tails off (sarcasm)

I love how they say that nicotine is as addictive as the hardcore drugs like h*roine and c*caine when curent studies show it's no more addictive than caffeine. They fail to mention the real addictive chemicals found in tobacco and tobacco based products. I also wonder what other side effects this vaccine may have on the pleasure center of the brain. Will have to break out my tin foil hat on this and watch them closely.

Ask a smoker who uses h*roin which one is tougher to quit.

Smoking is way tougher to quit.
Trust me, I know.
I know tons of ex addicts that still smoke and have NEVER met an ex smoker that is a junkie.

I don't want or need a vaccine to suppress my pleasure centers. I already have the government, regulations, tax, utilities bills, insurance expense, most everything on TV, local morons and my sister in law to do that with extreme efficiency at no extra cost.

Nicotine is addictive I know that for sure. I'm still at 3mg because I can't give it up. I did start at 24mg. I realized when I quit smoking that I could go much longer periods without it. I didn't get cravings that made me want to leave class to vape. I did with smokes. I don't know if it was me, ir if others have had it as well. I still went through withdrawal for a week or two vaping when I didn't smoke at first. That would be the crap that makes cigarettes so bad. Smoking isn't healthy, but what they've done to cigarettes in the last 20-30 years has made it so much worse. GMO tobacco and all the chemicals and what not. Don't believe me? Look at lung cancer statistic. People didn't die from smoking in the 50s and 60s like they do today. More of them were able to quit as well.

Yes the additives that were put in to help get the nicotine into your system faster at least that's what they claimed. I too went through the withdrawal from those toxins. Nicotine has around the same addictive properties as caffeine that has been proven in a study. It was in fact all the other added chemicals that enslaved us to tobacco based units. I can go for hours and not one craving for nicotine. I now vape 3mg and 0mg after 36mg and 24mg in the beginning.

I was a two pack a day smoker and I guess I got lucky to have been able to quit the first day I got my ego kit and some 36mg tobacco flavored liquid. It's a tough road that's for sure when one tries to quit smoking.

You keep talking about this study. Please provide some sort of citation. I'd be very interested in learning all about how quitting nicotine is as simple as quitting caffeine.

WE both know it's easier to quit ****** than cigarettes.
I have seen a study were never smokers were given nicotine to treat an illness and after 6 months of steady nicotine they stopped with no withdrawal.
We are talking about never smokers and nicotine (like from the patch)
A smoker is addicted to cigarettes/tobacco hardcore.

Shoot, i'm addicted to vaping. I wonder if it's the nicotine. Caffeine i drink nearly every single day ever, and in pretty large quantities, but i don't feel like i'm going nuts if i don't get any.
