I just made my very first coil ever! It's nothing special and I have a ton to learn yet but I am so proud of myself for doing it! It's very basic and simple but it's something I made on my own

WTG, skully! Next thing you know, you'll be blathering about claptons and aliens and other such esoterica... :giggle: I still use a plain ol 29ga 3/32 8 or 9 wrap, personally.

The wire I used was what came in the "coil designer kit" by LTQ Vapor. It says it is kanthal A1 24 gauge....I have to figure out the gauges. Is 24 gauge wire thicker than 26 gauge? Or is it the other way around? I would prefer a thicker wire personally.

Building coils is a satisfying experience, nothing better than vaping off coils you made. All your going to do is get better, faster and more finicky about the builds so enjoy the journey to a vastly improved vape experience by kicking those stock coils to the curb. Making the coil is the first step, wicking it is the real trick to master, all attys have different wicking methods so lots of good wicking info around so absorb it all in then find a way that works best.

ya..lower the number the thicker the wire is. The thicker the wire the lower ohms the build will be.

That's what I thought but was not 100% sure. I am just playing around right now, I do not intend to fire any of these coils up until I know a little more about what I am doing. Thank you for answering that for me, appreciate it!

I don't know if you have one already or not, check out the coilmaster jigs. They're not earth shattering gizmos but really simple to use and for basic or smaller coils (ie not 6-10+ multistrand complicated coils) it makes consistent coils every time. Plus I find using the coil rod makes coil positioning really simple. Covers 1.5mm to 4mm coil diameters.

Congrats on a good looking first coil. It's satisfying knowing if all else fails you're capable of at least making a simple decent performing coil. At least that's how I feel about it, self reliance.

If it says it came with 24ga kanthal then you may want to try 20 or 22ga kanthal for thicker wire.

I just bought the Coil Master v4 last night...can't wait to get it. Think I will definitely need it for more advanced coils!

VERY nice!!! Your first coil is very nicely done - evenly wrapped, good choice of wire, and I'm sure it will give a very satisfying vape. My first build was horrible, as you'll see in a minute. I've gotten much better, as undoubtedly you will also.

Very nice, @Skullzz!
@CrazyChef v2.0, could you please repost the pic of your first coil for comparison? LOL!!
But of course! :D

@Skullzz Here's my first attempt. I've gotten much better since this photo was taken...

Awesome! Building is very satisfying and the Coil Master kits have everything you need to build great coils. Way to go!

Very nice Skullzz, welcome to the DIY team. Making coils is always fun and a great way of saving money. If you ever get into claptoning wire, make sure to pick up some ball bearing swivels, they really do help.

Nice! I started building last week. For the life of me I can't get kanthal figured out for anything, but I can blindly wrap a multi strands fused Clapton and get incredible results... Go figure. I haven't actually "made" my own wire. I have a spool of coilology stuff.

You've given me inspiration to try to get something to work with my kanthal. My problem is that I think I'm trying to hard. Dual parallel, too many wraps, etc.

Best advice anyone can give is you've got to start somewhere. Start wrapping straight coils, before ya know it you'll be making your own wire. It really is quite easy to pick up, fair bit harder to put back down though lol

It's right innit? I was happy with my freehand claptons til I learned the swivel technique and once the swivels came the fused claptons and staggered claptons came. It's satisfying vaping something you're proud to have made yourself.

Rather enjoy a single coil myself. Easier to control the heat coming off it than a dual or bigger. Seen hex coils, the fuck? Like putting ya mouth on a reactor :/

Exactly why I feel zero need for all this high-wattage or sub-ohm vaping -- 8w got me off cigarettes; 9-10 watts has kept me that way for 3 yrs. Why would I ever need more?

My sweet spot is about 60w-80w. I doubt I will be able to make anything anytime soon that I can vape at that wattage lol. I need to learn more about ohms law before I try to vape anything I make. Right now I am just making coils for practice.

60-80 watts is a good wattage... for lightbulbs. :giggle: Since I can't even touch those with my fingers when they're lit, I don't think I'll be vaping at that wattage EVER. It makes me cringe just to think about it.

I totally agree, I call them sheep cos they follow the heard.

& you do right Andria, I agree with sticking to what works & high wattage vaping with low strength nicotine doesn't keep me off stinkies. Sure people laugh at my setups but it's that 10 watts an high nicotine keeping me off cigarettes. I have recently tried sub ohming an it's not for me!

You an me both! It would kill me!

I guess it's all in the huge airflow keeping it cool, that makes it possible, but that would make it totally unsatisfying to me -- I didn't huff my cigarettes, and I don't huff my vape.

But I'm using 3mg, at 9.5w... I've never found nicotine very addictive or satisfying; for me it's mostly just been the behavior-mimicry, and at first, the WTA -- getting free of MAOIs was a real challenge!

I've found getting off alot of things challenging but cigarettes is actually hands down is the hardest an I'm still trying to quit as we speak.
But yeah... the mimicry thing you said makes sense. My friend is using an endura T18 an has quit straight away but I see a friend using an alien whose still tying to quit. I let him try a Kayfun an he said "this is just what I've been searching for"
I told him not to listen to a shop who are just trying to sell their most popular expensive kit!!

You're right, it is all about air flow. Can't have a complex build with no airflow cause the coils will just burn. It's the action of drawing air in that keeps the temperature down. I have huffed cigarettes when I've been stressed myself, sometimes as many as 4 as soon as I wake up. About 70 watts is a comfortable vape for me. With most RDA's that is. My newest one the wondervape just seems to get too hot straight away, even though it has more airflow than my others :/

I vape from 10 watts to 80. Depends what I'm using.
This war of MTL & DL is fucking stupid though.
I had this teen laughing at me for using a nautilus mini.
Then following day he was in vape shop & I pulled out my RDA an he was like "wow you blowing clouds bro"
I said you fucking contradictory bastard how are you even getting served in here!!

Some tanks/rdas/rtas/rdtas do get hotter than others. It's just how a tank is built

Yeah, those Coilmaster kits really work wonders. I will absolutely swear by both the quality of the tools and the quality of the coils you can make with those.

Sweet coils btw, especially for a first time out. My first coil came out all buggered, LOL!

You using a jig? Here's some image with my jig. ..4mm id, now i do 3.5 . If using a jig, remove coil after you finished your wraps and insert back in the opposite direction to clean up the 1st coil... make sense?

That's jogged my mind. If you're saying only the 1st wrap is untidy what you should do is wrap an extra one when wrapping the coil, then just pull the first wrap out by leaving the coil on whatever you're wrapping it round and pulling on the leg leading to the first wrap with a pair of pliers. The coil will rotate round, pulling that wrap out and leaving you with a nice tight coil :)
