What other things helped you kick smoking besides vaping

I am starting this thread after just reading a post by a brave member who admitted he still smoked a few cigarettes a day....he admitted to this as if he had done something bad or had failed...The fact that he felt bad about himself for this, makes me think we as a community have lost sight of why we started vaping, and that we need to take a moment from our obssessions on gear and recepies to lend a hand on helping potential vapers..if we want to be accepted by the world maybe we should be more active in extending ourselves.....
With that in mind could you please share any tips, tricks, or experinces up to and including vaping that were effective in helping you quit smoking....

I realized something about myself...I smoked with stress...my smoking was me internalizing or pulling stress into my body in order to control it....instead of picking up a cig during a moment of stress and internalizing it I started breathing deep and blowing the stress out of my body. I'm one of those people who doesn't do stress well I either feed off of it or it feeds off of me....I just need some sort of regular activity to work out the stress...meditation, exercise...something on a daily basis.

Damn PV, you get laid this weekend or what? You actually seem like you are in a good mood, trying to help someone out and all, lol. :D

Seriously though, although it's been quite a while for me, I always looked at it like any cigarette that I didn't smoke was a step in the right direction rather than beating myself up over the ones that I did. I did have to increase my nic levels at first because I wasn't getting what I needed with the levels everyone else were using. Of course, the equipment I used was primitive compared to what is available today so I don't think my levels would correlate properly now but it may be something to at least consider.

I know others also had to add WTA in order to fill the parts of the puzzle that were missing for them. In any event, I think the approach has to be one of a marathon rather than a sprint, to borrow an old comparison.

No one needs to be looked down on or feel like they aren't making the cut because they are having a hard time quitting smoking or relapse in the process. It is life. If it was so damn easy to quit I wouldn't have kept on smoking for 41 years. After over 4 decades of living on the edge and pressing my luck I have watched my family whittled down to only a hand full of us left carrying on the name. Frankly at this time in my life I have no desire to try and improve the family numbers. On the other hand I wouldn't mind sticking around to be one of those old men that encourages the kids to deal out a little grief to the adults, or someday take a grandchild fishing. Most of all I want to spend what years I have left enjoying life with my wife. I've only had the pleasure of her company for seven years. That is not nearly enough time.

As far as vaping goes, it is merely a tool that so far has helped me quit smoking along with a determination to live a few more years. Does it mean I have arrived? Hell No!!! It means I'm only doing good for now. I look at it like this, I would rather walk around puffing on my mod and blowing clouds out, than to continue smoking and take the chance of dying a miserable death. I will continue to lower my nic levels while vaping until they are at zero and stay there and then will probably quit vaping.

The marathon approach always made me feel tired just from the very thought of it so I actually never tried it. But the human cannonball approach surely did the trick, and, therefore, that's what I'll recommend─just to lend you my new comparison.

We don't understand the nature of addiction fully, much less how to combat it....hell we don't even understand basic nutrition fully....punishing addicts has never worked.

That's exactly my point. The fact that the vast majority of "experienced vapers" still typically always recommend the old marathon approach is what's punishing (some) addicts because I happen to know for a fact this "expert" advice could, and probably would have caused me to stay addicted for the rest of my life so... just think about it.

Good for you for quitting smoking in a few seconds. Just because you did it doesn't mean it works that way for everyone. I stopped smoking on June 3rd and started vaping. My wife on the other hand struggled with it and just did it cold turkey a couple of weeks ago. Probably a good thing there is a internet for you to voice that BS on. In person you would probably be handed your ass on a platter.

i took his post as sarcastic, lol.

Years ago, I used to be really into exercise, was part of different types of study groups, tried to be useful out in the real world, help others, best I could, just be a decent human being, basically. I was the happiest I had been in a really long time, stress wasn't a real factor in my life after having gone through some REALLY tough experiences over a few years time, and smoking was always a part of everything - the good, the bad and the ugly. And I know it's not really what you're looking for, but smoking was always present in my life until vaping came along. Exercise, meditation, study groups... nothing played a role in removing smoking. Because NOTHING else did work, and I saw that it was helping the guy I was dating back then, I gave vaping a chance. Yeah, the real world doesn't always look kindly upon vaping, but I feel like it's up to us to let them know it was really the ONLY thing that did help us quit smoking, if it was.

While I agree, it saddened me that the guy felt the need to be apologetic or like he needed to confess something, and we do get very into vaping as a hobby, when I see people post that they're having a terrible time quitting, I see people flock to them, much like the out pour of support this man is receiving. I'm seeing mostly really supportive responses for him, which is what I see a lot of, for those that choose to share their struggle. While we all may be into our gear, our mixing, our socializing, even our politics, I think when it comes down to it, vapers generally do support/encourage each other. We're here for them, every time I see them post.

people use drugs for a whole lot of different issues...it's kind of like losing wieght...what works for some people doesn't work for another because of a variety of phsyologocal differences. I've seen lots of fat people beat the hell out of themselves for not losing wieght when it had nothing to do with self control, but science....

Good for you for quitting smoking in a few seconds. Just because you did it doesn't mean it works that way for everyone.
Similarly, just because the old marathon approach works for many (it does, but that's beside my point), doesn't mean it worked that way for me. I am six months smoke free because I simply skipped the whole struggle/debate so vaping didn't "help me quit smoking", but rather, starting to vape by vaping on nothing but decent quality custom built coils in a decent quality RDA at a high enough wattage immediately completely eliminated my need to smoke. This was after having smoked 16 - 17 red Marlboros every day for more than 20 years.

Of course. It is completely normal around these parts of the internet to be called a dick for merely pointing out the old marathon approach is what's causing a lot of people to completely permanently abandon vaping so thank you for proving my point.

The three big fails I've had in trying to help actual people I know quit through vaping was when I gave them big setups, skipping over the traditional high nic tobacco flavor juice with a cig alike

The biggest wins in the same scenario have been when they started with more modern cigalikes

If the desire to quit is not there, it just ain't gonna happen, no matter what kind of vape they have

Seeing that now with my husband, though he is using a cig alike at least a third of the time now. He can't stand using a mod, dripper, tank, squonker, you name it.

He has access to my vast and very nice collection and it is a non-starter

It's the method of constantly bouncing back and forth between smoking and vaping. Some call it dualing... I tend to call it dueling because it's─often typically─some kind of duel (i.e. a one-on-one battle of vaping vs. smoking).

Patches I could only quit for a few weeks then back to cigarettes. Vaping what kept me off was will power until I discovered NETs, that and my diy other juices I haven't smoked in theee years. I've never even had the urge to smoke since then NETs taste better than cigarettes and my fav diy peppermint ice is refreshing. :)

16 to 17 cigarettes a day. I guess I'm supposed to be overly impressed they were Marlboro Reds. Damn I only smoke 41 years and was only a PAD smoker along with 2 1/2 cans of Copenhagen a week when I decided to quit. There were a few years in there that I was at 2 plus PAD and smoked Camel non filters, and a couple of years of rolling my own. That out to make me some kinda a damn saint by your stupid statement.

for instnace.....WTAs...there are naturally occuring alkiloids in tobacco that act as anti-depressants, in fact they were the basis for the first perscription anti-depressants ....now one persons brain chemistry wouldn't have a problem giving up those MAOIs....whereas for another person their brain chemistry would find giving up those anti-depressants a real struggle.

The first go around me and the wife bought Smok V8 Baby Sticks. More air than she could handle. In the end I bought her an aspire premium with a Nautilus mini on it. I pretty sure the airflow restriction is so tight on that thing you could filter drinking water out of a mud puddle with it. She was still hacking with it trying to MTL. She finally said fuck it she didn't want to vape either. She cut back on what the cigs she had left and when gone quit. She is still having a hard time with it. Not a damn thing I can do about it.

Simple. Give every smoker a proper chance to evaluate the approach instead of conveniently keep telling them what is or isn't a good approach.

Hi, everyone, i'm a new member here. Start vaping 10 days ago and only have 5 cigs in the first 3 days. manage to cigarette free for 7 days - which is a huge achievement since i've never had a day wihout cigs for a decade. Even the days when i hospitalized, i still managed to sneak out and puff.

I think, in my 7 days of not smoking expericence, one thing that help me from not relapsing back to cigs (whic is really easy to get here in Indonesia) is because i don't think that i stopped smoking.

In my mind, i'm still smoking, i just change my cigs into an e-cigs.

I believe that mindset is really important. Well, at least for me. Bc i can stand on not smoking for one full day if there's some necessity that prevent me to get a cig. But i couldn't even last an hour stopped smoking.

Hey, if she decides the struggle isn't worth it, but doesn't want to smoke, I'm a MTL vaper that doesn't like a tight draw, either. There's in-between stuff available. BUT... if she can stay quit, then more power to her, man! :vino:

Hey welcome to the forum. While many here really don't consider themselves smokers, with vaping, I certainly understand that vaping does look like smoking. Congratulations on stopping cigarettes, it's no easy thing, for sure.

So... pay no attention to the battle going on in here, LOL. Hang out and enjoy the rest of the forum.

The quitting smoking is up to her. There are 5 different mods in the house that about cover the bases as far as draw restriction, temp and such. I've sat here and watched her hack a lung trying to use all of them. I told her if she wants to smoke then smoke. If she wants to quit then quit. If the vaping thing isn't going to work then she has to figure out what will. So she quit and is battling the craving.

Saying I quit made me want a real cigarette, lol

OK now that makes since. Here's the deal from what I've read on here the majority of the people on here started vaping to get off tobacco or are using vaping as a gateway to work towards that means. Then you have others that have quit smoking or never did that are into vaping as a hobby.

To be honest a habit is a habit. Both of these habits unless you are nic free vaping involve nicotine that is addictive. So you vape and quit smoking you give up the more dangerous of the two addictions. I don't care how anyone quits smoking if they want to quit and do. This just worked for me, but not for my wife. So she fights the battle her way and I fight it mine. Mine right now involves nicotine decrease to 0 and then probably no more vaping.

Just because something was possible for you does not make it possible for everyone. That is what you need to remember. You need to also be thankful that your struggle was not as difficult as the one someone else is going through. I'm damn thankful I was able to put cigarettes done start vaping and not look back. At the same time I hate seeing my wife have to fight it the way she is.

First draw from a vape nearly killed me LOL.

The coughing was part of the reason she wanted to quit smoking. After a couple of weeks of try this mod or juice and hacking worse than she did smoking she said that was enough. We tried everything from adjusting nic levels to adjusting PG/VG ratios. Just one of those things that didn't work for her. The reason I'm reducing to 0 nic and will quit vaping after that is because it kind of a double standard to sit here puffing away in front of her. Kind of adding insult to injury.

I smoked for 40 years prior to vaping eJuice....... I have been vaping since early 80's..... just for other than nicotine.......
I started vaping to replace cigarettes in July of 2014...... had last cigarette sometime in December 2014..... without really even trying to quit. I just stop having to buy cigarettes.

Sometimes, I also just told myself I didn't quit smoking, I just switched brands, lol

After seeing many many friends trying vaping I came to the conclusion that it's a totally subjective matter: for some it works effortlessly, for others it doesn't, ever. period.
What makes the difference, I don't know... It's not the gear, it's not the will, must be something else.
Sort of a Zen thing lol, it's not about you getting into to vaping it's the other way around

What YOU need to remember is the simple fact I never claimed it's possible for everyone. It isn't. My point was that a lot of people still keep claiming it simply can't be done or it's just adding more difficulty and expense so there's absolutely no use trying it. As a direct result from these people's claims, a lot of newcomers are highly convinced that the fact it's so terribly hard or impossible for them to quit smoking by vaping cannot be due to those claims being both presumptuous and completely inaccurate.

Look man difficulty and expense still boil down to how bad do you want to quit. Anyone can make an excuse and reason why they can't quit. Tobacco was costing the house here over 500 a month. I've spent over that in the last 6 weeks on vape supplies. Some day that investment will pay off.

People that want to quit will make it happen. Others will talk about quitting while going through the motions but they aren't determined. They will more than likely be wheezing and gasping with a cigarette in their hands when their final breath comes. That is about as cold hearted a dick as I can be about it.

Part of why it's called an addiction is due to the wanting to not quit. Whether it's just an excuse or not, the end result will be the same, i.e., they still don't quit. But vaping as a smoke cessation tool can, in many cases (but not all cases) and if the set of circumstances are about right, be more than just a little bit successful. So it's still important to find a strategy that works, if any. And, because it varies wildly from person to person... that's why IMHO a lot of newcomers (including wannabe-vapers) need, from us, more real support for─and less authoritative generalizations against─actually FINDING a strategy that works.

What I'm talking about is there has to be a much better way than just telling them "here, why don't you try this nice tobacco flavored cig-alike and see if you like it" and, next, let a lot of them walk away with their typical excuse of "I tried, but vaping isn't for me so because they always say vaping is the only method that truly works and because I already tried so many other methods in the past and now vaping doesn't work either, I finally give up trying to quit, and I give up permanently". Helping them avoid pitfalling like that should be high on our list of priorities if our aim is to give everyone as fair a chance as we possibly are capable of giving them. Our best intentions are simply not good enough. Remember vaping will almost completely be banned if we don't act soon.

My wife bought me a Halo Triton and a bunch of their Tribeca juice at 18mg, on the advice of the guy at the store in Atlanta. When she brought them back here, I waited 3 days to try it. I guess I was nervous and afraid to begin because I was putting a lot of hope into it. I began when I awoke that day. I haven't had a cig since, going on 10 months. Within two months I had gone all the way, multiple mods, tanks and DIY.

This approach does work for some, while the marathon works for others. I find it interesting, and dismaying, that older folks need to have it explained to them that personal anecdote is a specific individual's experience which cannot be extrapolated to the general. I understand the young not knowing this, but not older folks. It's one of those things that should go without saying, without people taking umbrage because they feel as if their experience is invalidated because someone had an opposing one.
